RNC 2016! Last Saturday night the Brick TeeVee Crew went to see the remastered Beatles classic "A Hard Day's Night" then stopped at a local watering hole for a few adult beverages then back to the compound for a few more and before you know it it's 3 AM!! So we totally missed last week! Then this week we organized and produced "An Evening With Mr. Stress" on WRUW-FM during the regular Thursday shows with Cleveland blues harmonica legend Bill "Mr. Stress" Miller sitting in with all the hosts talking about the old days of the Cleveland music scene and his illustrious career as leader of the Mr. Stress Blues Band! Mr. Stress suffered a stroke back in December but has recovered nicely thanks to an alert listener to Bob Kincaid's show who called the local police and got a 9-1-1 crew there quickly. At The Guardian Trevor Timm finds that The Senate is giving more power to the NSA, in secret. Everyone should fight it. Politicians are still trying to hand over your data behind closed doors, under the guise of 'cybersecurity' reform. Have we learned nothing? One of the most underrated benefits of Edward Snowden's leaks was how they forced the US Congress to shelve the dangerous, privacy-destroying legislation– then known as Cispa – that so many politicians had been so eager to pass under the guise of "cybersecurity". Now a version of the bill is back, and apparently its authors want to keep you in the dark about it for as long as possible. Now it's called the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (Cisa), and it is a nightmare for civil liberties. Indeed, it's unclear how this kind of law would even improve cybersecurity. The bill was marked up and modified by the Senate intelligence committee in complete secrecy this week, and only afterward was the public allowed to see many of the provisions passed under its name. Cisa is what Senator Dianne Feinstein, the bill's chief backer and the chair of the committee, calls an "information-sharing" law that's supposed to help the government and tech and telecom companies better hand information back and forth to the government about “cyberthreat” data, such as malware. But in reality, it is written so broadly it would allow companies to hand over huge swaths of your data – including emails and other communications records – to the government with no legal process whatsoever. It would hand intelligence agencies another legal authority to potentially secretly re-interpret and exploit in private to carry out even more surveillance on the American public and citizens around the world. Under the new provisions, your data can get handed over by the tech companies and others to the Department of Homeland Security (not exactly a civil liberties haven itself), but then it can be passed along to the nation's intelligence agencies … including the NSA. And even if you find out a company violated your privacy by handing over personal information it shouldn’t have, it would have immunity from lawsuits – as long as it acted in "good faith". It could amount to what many are calling a “backdoor wiretap”, where your personal information could end up being used for all sorts of purposes that have nothing to do with cybersecurity. But it's not just privacy advocates who should be worried: transparency also takes a huge hit under this bill. Cisa would create a brand-new exception to the Freedom of Information Act (which is already riddled with holes), all the better to ensure everything in this particular process remains secret. In typical intel-committee fashion, the Foia amendment wasn't even made public until after it was passed by committee. ................................ No one doubts cybersecurity and the risk of criminals breaking into computer systems is a problem, but by using unprovable numbers and ridiculous fear-mongering catch-phrases like cyber-Pearl Harbor or cyber-Armegeddon, the government hopes it can approve extraordinary new powers for itself, and untold windfalls for the massive cybersecurity industrial complex. Yes, the networks at many companies have been compromised, but equating every low-level hacker or prankster with cyberwar has become a lesson in absurdity. As cybersecurity expert Peter Singer has pointed out, squirrels are a far bigger threat to take down power grids in the United States than foreign hackers. The best thing the government could probably do for cybersecurity is get its own house in order, starting with upgrading its terribly old computer systems that, in some agencies, are running a version of Windows that’s so old, Microsoft doesn't even update it for the public anymore. Many agency websites don’t use basic HTTPS encryption, others, like the FBI, don’t use other basic forms of encryption to protect their emails. Why does the NSA continue to stockpile software vulnerabilities that could be disclosed to companies like Microsoft to make all of us safe? The fact of the matter is the Snowden leaks have done more for cybersecurity than any info-sharing bill ever could. The major tech companies have leapt forward and are now competing on who is more secure because of worries that the NSA, and other intelligence agencies for that matter, are snooping wherever they can. It also gives companies broad immunity to spy on—and even launch countermeasures against—potentially innocent users. The bill tries to follow up on failed cybersecurity legislation in the House called CISPA that the President has threatened to veto. Last year, tens of thousands of concerned individuals used the EFF action center to speak out against overbroad and ineffective cybersecurity proposals. Now we need your help again. Can you send a message to your Senators asking them to oppose this bill? YOU BETTER! The dark cloak of Inverted Totalitarianism and the Corporate State is slowly taking over all forms of life-as-we-know-it in the U.S. and in many other parts of the world. Instead they bombard us with celebrity crap, wall-to-wall sports coverage and social "hot button" issues that sometimes make it to the pro-corporate politicians-in-robes SCOTUS who inevitably rule for the "corporations as people" most strikingly as the Hobby Lobby decision that in essence says a corporation can imposes its "religious beliefs" on its workers (unknown to us is how a simple legal construct [a "thing" called a "corporation"] can have "religious beliefs"). One need only to sift through these pages to find how one-sided U.S. Corporomedia is by looking for coverage of Palestine or Ukraine for example. Compounding this is the never-ending assault on public eduation and teachers' unions (see The numbers that private schools are afraid of WaPo) where critical thinking is being substituted with test-taking aptitude and teachers are now "being held accountable" and threatened with their jobs and livelyhoods based solely on how well their students can take and pass rote tests, which can only lead to another generation of kids who are less informed, less curious, less willing to seek out truth and are pre-occupied with their gadgets and video games. We challenge everyone in Congress, their staffs and the entire Obomber administration and staffs to take a Fourth Grade Race to the Top Test and see how well they do! Haha! Another Case-In-Point on how the Corporamedia skews reality is the coverage of the huge influx of children crossing the U.S. southern border to escape violence in many Central American countries, most if not all being run by U.S.-backed far-right extreme governments whose enforcement goons were trained, armed and influenced by the School of America in Fort Benning, Georgia (now called The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC). From SOA WATCH The Root Causes of Migration: End U.S. Funding of the Drug War and the Corrupt Honduran Regime .....The number of children attempting to cross the border into the United States has risen dramatically in the last five years: In FY 2009, roughly 6,000 unaccompanied minors were detained near the border. Credible estimates project that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will detain as many as 74,000 unaccompanied minors by the end of FY 2014. Approximately 28% of the children detained this year are from Honduras, 24% from Guatemala, and 21% from El Salvador.The particularly severe increases in Honduran migration are a direct result of the June 28, 2009 SOA-graduate led coup, the abusive policies of the resulting Honduran regimes, and the shameful U.S. support for these corrupt governments that emerged after dubious elections in 2009 and 2013. Since 2008, the U.S. has spent over $800 million in security aid to Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador through the “Central American Regional Security Initiative” (CARSI) in addition to millions more in bilateral military and police aid to each country. The current humanitarian crisis on the border, is a direct result of the drastic U.S.-led militarization of the drug war, unequal economic relationships (e.g. Free Trade Agreements that have ravaged campesino communities), and U.S. support for the cartel-infiltrated post-coup government of Honduras. By every conceivable measure - the availability of drugs, mass incarceration, mass immigrant detention, and the effective use of tax money in the U.S.; homicide and violence rates, corruption, the overall power of drug cartels, and migration rates in Central America – the "war on drugs" has been an abject and costly failure. It is time, it has been time, for the U.S. government to take real responsibility for its role in the root causes of migration from Central America. The region will never be “cured” of its ills without an honest, fact-based re-evaluation and a resulting re-implementation of U.S. foreign policy..... But this week National Petroleum Radio (NPR) rolled out their own "coup" with an interview with the new commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection R. Gil Kerlikowske whitewashing But Kerlikowske brings an added sensibility to the job. He was once chief of police in Buffalo, N.Y., and Seattle, and in our talk, he referred often to the lessons of his "40 years of experience." He described his management of violent incidents on the streets of Seattle; he believed his officers were better able to keep the peace when they shed helmets and armor, engaging crowds in a closer, low-key style...... never once mentioning the 1999 WTO Protests & Seattle's Police Riot: ........The particulars are well known. Videotape shot during the protests and broadcast on television attest to the truth. As an article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer described one videotaped incident, “A SWAT officer on riot duty...during the World Trade Organization protests kicks an unarmed man in the groin. Then he fires a beanbag round from his rifle at close range while the man retreats, hands high above his head.” Most accounts have the police first violating the peace. In fact, despite what one account says was “upwards of 70,000 people” who were involved in the protests, only a handful were reportedly involved in window smashing and graffiti spraying. Even this vandalism reportedly began only after police began using pepper spray and rubber (plastic) bullets against peaceful protesters. Once the vandalism began, it was used by police as a rationale to break the heads of all protesters, peaceful and violent alike...... winding up in part with Seattle Settles ACLU Lawsuit Over Violation of Free Speech Rights During WTO Protests AND Seattle to pay WTO protesters $1 million PLUS City to pay protesters $250,000 to settle WTO suit. Fast forward to the G20 Meeting in Pittsbugh in 2009 where Blackhawk helicoptors and armed riot police closed down the city culminating in Use of Sound Weapon Provokes Lawsuit Two Years After Pittsburgh G20. Now comes Cleveland to host Republican Convention in 2016!
