And at The Guardian Glenn Greenwald writes Finally: hear Bradley Manning in his own voice .....I'm personally unaware of who made the recording and am not aware of how it was made, but its authenticity has been verified. Last week, the superb independent journalist Alexa O'Brien, who has covered the proceedings from start to finish, created the best transcript she could of Manning's statement, which was published, among other places, in the Guardian. But this audio recording provides the first opportunity to hear Manning, in his own voice, explain his actions; that, presumably, is why whoever recorded Manning's statement risked violating the court-martial rules to do so. Earlier this morning, the FPF, along with the full audio, published a statement of why it chose to publish this along with some brief analysis. I'm posting below some of the most significant excerpts of Manning's statement.....
ALMOST GONE: Graham Nash and James Raymond composed the song “Almost Gone (The Ballad of Bradley Manning)” during this spring’s US tour of Crosby-Nash, and the new recording serves as the music bed for the video; it features an impassioned lead vocal by Nash, a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted (Crosby, Stills & Nash, and The Hollies). “Bradley Manning is a hero to me,” he sings, acknowledging Manning’s role in making public videos and documents that shed light on such as issues as the true number and cause of civilian casualties in Iraq, human rights abuses by U.S.-funded contractors and foreign militaries, and the role that spying and bribes play in international diplomacy. NEXT Mirwais Harooni and Phil Stewart report for Reuters Afghanistan's Karzai blasts U.S., marring Hagel visit ..."Those bombs that went off in Kabul and Khost were not a show of force to America. They were in service of America. It was in the service of the 2014 slogan to warn us if they (Americans) are not here then Taliban will come," Karzai said in a speech. "In fact those bombs, set off yesterday in the name of the Taliban, were in the service of Americans to keep foreigners longer in Afghanistan." ...... Karzai has a history of making incendiary statements that exasperate Washington but the nature and awkward timing of his latest remarks about the United States were exceptional. He also alleged on Sunday that the Taliban and the United States had been holding talks in the Gulf Arab state of Qatar on a "daily basis," further fuelling his suggestion that Washington and the militants were working at common purposes. "I told the president that it was not true," Hagel said. "The fact is any prospect for peace or political settlements - that has to be led by the Afghans." The Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid, denied that negotiations with the United States had resumed. Karzai's government also alleged that U.S.-led forces and Afghans working with them were abusing and arresting university students. Karzai issued an executive order banning foreign troops from entering all education institutions. Hagel and Karzai were meant to have appeared together at a joint news conference on Sunday evening. But, in a reminder of the threats posed by the resilient insurgency, U.S. officials said it was canceled because of security concerns. ...... U.S. forces have denied involvement in any abuses. From DN Headlines March 11 Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel: "I told the president it was not true that the United States was unilaterally working with the Taliban in trying to negotiate anything. The fact is, any prospect for peace or political settlements, that has to be led by the Afghans." Notice how Reuters misses a huge part of the quote?
Here's some shocking news from an AP report on The Most Transparent Administration Ever™ courtesy Michael Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog via ZeroHedge Government Transparency Hits Record Low Surprise, surprise... the 'most transparent administration ever' is, well, the least transparent. Not that any of you are shocked by this revelation, but a new report by the Associated Press demonstrates just how secret our government and intelligence agencies have become. Not only did they claim “national security” over and over like a bunch of drunk parrots, they also claimed the need to protect “internal deliberations.” Specifically, the number of times the government withheld or censored reports in 2012 was 479,000 times, up 22% from 2011. The CIA denied 60% of requests, up from 49% in 2011. From the Associated Press:

The AP examined more than 5,600 data elements measuring the administration’s performance on government transparency since Obama’s election. When the government withheld or censored records, it cited exceptions built into the law to avoid turning over materials more than 479,000 times, a roughly 22 percent increase over the previous year. In a year of intense public interest over deadly U.S. drones, the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, terror threats and more, the government cited national security to withhold information at least 5,223 times — a jump over 4,243 such cases in 2011 and 3,805 cases in Obama’s first year in office. The secretive CIA last year became even more secretive: Nearly 60 percent of 3,586 requests for files were withheld or censored for that reason last year, compared with 49 percent a year earlier. U.S. courts are loath to overrule the administration whenever it cites national security. A federal judge, Colleen McMahon of New York, in January ruled against The New York Times and the American Civil Liberties Union to see records about the government’s legal justification for drone attacks and other methods it has used to kill terrorism suspects overseas, including American citizens. She cited an “Alice in Wonderland” predicament in which she was expected to determine what information should be revealed but unable to challenge the government’s secrecy claim. Part of her ruling was sealed and made available only to the government’s lawyers.

Think about how scary that is. Judges just accept government claims and then the public isn’t allowed to see the relevant parts of her ruling. Let’s now finish with this statement from Alexander Abdo, an ACLU staff attorney for its national security project: "In some ways, the Obama administration is actually even more aggressive on secrecy than the Bush administration." You just can't make this stuff up!
Speaking of sunshine you should pick up a copy of The Covert Sphere at Cornell Press. In December 2010 the U.S. Embassy in Kabul acknowledged that it was providing major funding for thirteen episodes of Eagle Four—a new Afghani television melodrama based loosely on the blockbuster U.S. series 24. According to an embassy spokesperson, Eagle Four was part of a strategy aimed at transforming public suspicion of security forces into something like awed respect. Why would a wartime government spend valuable resources on a melodrama of covert operations? The answer, according to Timothy Melley, is not simply that fiction has real political effects but that, since the Cold War, fiction has become integral to the growth of national security as a concept and a transformation of democracy. In The Covert Sphere, Melley links this cultural shift to the birth of the national security state in 1947. Peter C. Baker had this review at The Nation about the author Suspicious Minds: On Timothy Melley .......If deniability has an author, Melley argues in The Covert Sphere, it is George Kennan, who in 1948 penned National Security Council directive NSC-10/2, the document that changed the CIA, then barely one year old, from a purely intelligence-gathering outfit into an agency charged with “propaganda, economic warfare, preventive direct action, including sabotage, anti-sabotage” and so on. Crucially, NSC-10/2 ordered that these operations be implemented in such a way that, if discovered, “the US Government can plausibly disclaim any responsibility.” More than sixty years later, the American covert sector is a thriving, many-tentacled monster of deniability funded by at least $75 billion per year, consisting of at least forty-five government agencies, 1,271 smaller government organizations and 1,391 private corporations. Thanks to the occasional revelation by investigative journalists or congressional committees, most Americans have a vague idea that the covert sector exists, that it has a great deal of power, and that it has in the past resorted to surveillance, kidnapping, torture and assassination in the name of protecting American interests. But what people know best about the covert sector is that it remains mostly unknowable by design: it lies, it keeps its past and future plans secret, it spreads misinformation both abroad and at home, and it shrouds its every move in a thick haze of overlapping cover stories and disavowals. It is the massive “known unknown” of American life, the supreme dysfunctional narrative, doing its business somewhere out of sight while we eat breakfast, or sleep, or read about it in the news without learning what it is. “Mistakes were made” implies a corollary, unspoken but I think widely felt: more mistakes are being made right now, and will remain unknown until long after the damage is done..... The news last week (see our story of 6 March, Coal triggers carbon level rise) that there has been a significant increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) in the last year should have caused a ripple of fear around the world. Instead, a large stride towards the milestone of 400 parts per million (ppm) of CO2 went almost unremarked. Yet many scientists, environmentalists and journalists who have studied climate change, campaigned to prevent it, or spent years reporting too little action by world leaders to reduce emissions, must have inwardly shuddered. For those who understand the implications of the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change, this is not a milestone to be passed in such a hurry and with so little attention. If the science is right, then the human race is about to lose control of what happens to our civilization and our future. There are those reading this who will disagree with this summary. Some are simply in denial about what is happening. There are also campaigners who call themselves sceptics, who do not and will not accept the scientific consensus, through optimism, obstinacy, or because they have an alternative political agenda, sometimes encouraged and paid for by the fossil fuel lobby. But what is surprising is the silence of the majority of rational human beings who accept the science but carry on as if nothing were happening. There is admittedly room for argument about how quickly and fundamentally our lives will change. Are we merely approaching the cliff, standing on the edge, or have we already jumped? Just to recap on where we are: the consensus the world (politicians and scientists) has reached on climate change is that the increase in global temperatures must be pegged to 2°C or below, otherwise climate change will literally get too hot to handle. Read on for the scary details! Did you know One-fifth of world's plants are at risk of extinction? Here's the Problem: Extinction of Plant and Animal Species ..... Scientists have identified the key causes of the crisis. In particular, the loss of species is caused by as the growing size of human populations, and the rate at which humans consume resources and cause changing climate. Global Warming and the Loss of Species At the end of the Permian period, 251 million years ago, global warming caused the worst mass extinction in the history of the planet. That time a six-degree C. increase in the global temperature was enough to kill up to 95 per cent of the species that were alive on Earth. This extinction is called the "Great Dying." Gigantic volcanic eruptions caused this warming by triggering a "runaway greenhouse effect" that nearly put an end to life on Earth. Conditions in what geologists have termed a "post-apocalyptic greenhouse" were so severe that only one large land animal was left alive, and fewer than one in 10 species survived. ...... It took 100 million years for species diversity to return to former levels. In this case, the carbon dioxide buildup which created this greenhouse effect came from massive volcanic eruptions. Today the build up of carbon dioxide is coming from our life style and industrial activity. An increase of 6°C is the upper end of what the IPCC is forecasting for this century, the range that will occur if we do not make severe changes soon. If 95% of the species on Earth die out—one of them will be Homo sapiens..... Much more! Kinda makes the scary deficit talk all that much more trivial, doesn't it? What we are witnessing and living throught RIGHT NOW is what's been termed The Sixth Great Extinction .... What is the rate of extinction? The normal "background rate of extinction is roughly 1-2 species per year." [2]. Others calculate it at as 'two to five families of marine invertebrates and vertebrates every million years'. "Paleontologists estimate the background rate of species extinction--the long-term extinction rate exhibited prior to humanity's influence--at between 1 and 10 extinctions each decade among every million fossil species. Assuming from a variety of estimates that 10 million species are alive today (Stork 1993 and 1997, May 1988, Hammond 1992), scientists can expect from 1 to 10 species to go extinct each year from all forms of life, visible and microscopic. In fact, species are exiting much faster. Based on records of extinction among the best- studied types of animals, ecologist Stuart Pimm and colleagues calculated extinction rates during the past century to range from 100 to 10,000 species per year (again, assuming 10 million species exist). That rate is between 100 and 1000 times faster than the background rate of species extinction (Pimm et al 1995)." [3] - Bold mine. Extinction rates in the tropics are based on rates of deforestation. Unfortunately "the Earth needs, on average, about 10 million years to recover from global extinctions". "If we substantially diminish biodiversity on Earth, we can't expect the biosphere to just bounce back. It doesn't do that. The process of diversification is too slow", "The planet would be biologically depleted for millions of years, with consequences extending not only beyond the lives of our children's children, but beyond the likely lifespan of the entire human species." This is being accomplished through a variety of means including habitat destruction, hunting and poaching, the introduction of non-native species, pollution and climate change. In 1992 "some 1,700 of the world's leading scientists, including the majority of Nobel laureates in the sciences" warned that:

Many of The Faithful believe this is old news, he's an old man, he says he's against globalization and for helping the poor yada yada yada. Sorry but the attitude "that was a long time ago" and the "maybe he helped some" is the exact type of response Da Church is expecting from hypnotized "Faithful" and the Mass Media (pun intended) is all over this pushing this line too. The exact same line was pushed when Nazi Youth Ratzinger was made Pope ("that was a long time ago" yada yada). We watched a documentary some time ago we'll never forget about a man's personal search for what the Catholic Church did during WWII and the holocaust (James Carroll's Constantine's Sword). He went back to his roots in Italy to find out what the church did there then, talked to old people and unearthed incredible letters and documents that unequivocally showed Da Church's close involvement in "turning a blind eye" in repressing the Jews and even helping in their segregation in Italy (his hometown was a Jewish enclave for centuries, all turned upside down during the war). So we cannot go along with this line of thinking that "it was a long time ago" and fugeddaboutit. No. NO. It is SO important that WE, all of us, and The World at-large REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED in the 'Dirty War' in Argentina and everywhere in the "Southern Cone"; not just the absolute brutality but to remember it was schemed by "The Chicago Boys" (Milton Freidman's boyz as outlined in John Perkins' [Confessions of an Economic Hit Man) and implemented by US training for these thugs at the School of the Americas. NO. What Bergoglio did THEN is ABSOLUTELY RELEVANT NOW. The SAME powers that are now openly dissing Chavecito and trying to undermine other South American countries as well and their populist socialist governments have not gone away. The School of the Americas changed their name but their tactics have now been incorporated in the U.S. military *foreign policy* in the scope of torture and rendition. This is a blatant absolute authoritarian move and we should be aware of this, as it is happening here, right now. And the Catholic Church has a centuries-long history of this kind of repression. ERNESTO SEMÁN: Yeah, I think that what Horacio Verbitsky wrote during these several years is he’s tried to uncover what is this kind of social conservatism, that you were trying to describe at the beginning of the program. It’s not—in terms of the discourse, it’s not the kind of Catholic conservatism that you’re going to find in the United States, with this emphasis on the individual salvation, on government crushing individual liberty and economic activity, and because it’s much more socially loaded. But the paradox—and I think that that’s the most important point of Horacio Verbitsky’s work—is how this same discourse, with a lot of emphasis on social justice and on equality, at the same time has worked to undermine the work who had tried to solve those same problems.

He has reported extensively on the church’s complicity with the military junta that once ruled Argentina, and specifically on the role of Bergoglio. There are very few survivors from WWII in Europe and Japan and the U.S. still alive that can still tell us how it was then. And ditto for the survivors of the COEHM/Friedman/Kissinger/Reagun 'Dirty Wars' of the 70s and 80s and 90s. WE need to KNOW so we can STOP IT from happening again. If that's even possible now. 10th Anniversary of the Invasion of Iraq: At TomDispatch Tomgram: Peter Van Buren, One Day Even the Drones Will Have to Land. Peter Van Buren writes "Mission Unaccomplished - Why the Invasion of Iraq Was the Single Worst Foreign Policy Decision in American History" Not to put too fine a point on it, but the invasion of Iraq turned out to be a joke. Not for the Iraqis, of course, and not for American soldiers, and not the ha-ha sort of joke either. And here’s the saddest truth of all: on March 20th as we mark the 10th anniversary of the invasion from hell, we still don’t get it. In case you want to jump to the punch line, though, it’s this: by invading Iraq, the U.S. did more to destabilize the Middle East than we could possibly have imagined at the time. And we -- and so many others -- will pay the price for it for a long, long time. How much truth should we gleen from the recent hagiography of the events leading to the Iraq "military intervention" purported by MSNBC's "Hubris"? (watch at Bradblog.com here) Much of what really happened in past White Houses involving past "military interventions" seem to have been covered up or lost to the "Official Washington" of lazy reporting and stenography and we're still learing new details of what really went on and its context. CASE IN POINT: Unflappable investigative journalist Robert Parry has just released Rethinking Watergate/Iran-Contra on his ConsotiumNews.com website: Special Report: New evidence continues to accumulate showing how Official Washington got key elements of the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals wrong, especially how these two crimes of state originated in treacherous actions to secure the powers of the presidency. A favorite saying of Official Washington is that “the cover-up is worse than the crime.” But that presupposes you accurately understand what the crime was. And, in the case of the two major U.S. government scandals of the last third of the Twentieth Century – Watergate and Iran-Contra – that doesn’t seem to be the case. Indeed, newly disclosed documents have put old evidence into a sharply different light and suggest that history has substantially miswritten the two scandals by failing to understand that they actually were sequels to earlier scandals that were far worse. Watergate and Iran-Contra were, in part at least, extensions of the original crimes, which involved dirty dealings to secure the immense power of the presidency. Read all of this (and the comments section too) and ask yourself what parts of "Hubris" are being carefully shaped into the next "Official Washington" storyline.
