Labor Day Special 2014! The Brick TeeVee Crew did lots of projects around the compound over the Labor Day Weekend (including another plumbing-job-from-Hell), had the required cook-out and consumed large quantities of adult beverages too while watching The Tribe make their move in the AL Central! We have so much stuff gathered up over the past few weeks we need to get it off our table and put it on yours! So not a lot of big snips this week but certainly a lot of links and big stories to read! First off Ring of Fire Radio snags this clip from The Big Picture Thom Hartmann: You Don’t Know What Libertarian Means In attempt to help distance themselves from the GOP, more and more conservatives are labeling themselves as “Libertarians.” The only problem, as Thom Hartmann points out on The Big Picture, is that these conservatives have absolutely no clue what it means to be a “Libertarian.” Take a look! And watch Thursday's Full Show 8/28/14: Mitch McConnell’s “47% Moment”? Thom discusses the secret audio of Sen. Mitch McConnell’s plan to screw over the middle class with Attorney and Radio Host Mike Papantonio and whether Obama can still consider himself a progressive with Salon’s Thomas Frank. In tonight’s “Daily Take” Thom discusses what America would be like under Libertarian rule. Speaking of Mitch "The Turtle" McConnell (R-KY) The Nation has the leaked audio! Lauren Windsor exposes Caught on Tape: What Mitch McConnell Complained About to a Roomful of Billionaires (Exclusive) AND McConnell and his ilk in states across the country are passing restrictive voter laws so this is worth reposting from a few weeks ago from BradBlog.com Expert: Out of 1 Billion Votes in 14 Years, Just 31 Incidents of Voter Fraud That MIGHT Have Been Stopped by Polling Place Photo ID Restrictions ......... Justin Levitt's piece at Washington Post's "Wonk Blog" does all the heavy lifting. We've previously reported on the exhaustive study by the non-partisan News21 consortium which found just 10 incidents of possible voter fraud that might have been deterred by polling place Photo ID restrictions in all 50 states from 2000 to 2012. That report was based on all of the official actions filed in each state during that time period, of all forms of potential voter fraud or voter registration fraud or, more broadly, election fraud in general. But now Levitt --- a constitutional and democracy law professor at Loyola University Law School, who also works on related issues with NYU's Brennan Center for Justice and frequently testifies as an expert in various law suits and hearings regarding voting rights --- offers an update to those numbers. The results are remarkable, though unsurprising to those who have followed the creation of this Republican stalking horse for the past decade........ READ ALL OF THIS! AND share with your state election officials and state legislators and local news organizations! We can only hope the GOPhers' BOGUS CLAIM of alleged WIDESPREAD "voter fraud" is FINALLY DEBUNKED and LAID TO REST. THIS is a CLEAR-CUT CASE of REPUBLICAN OBSTRUCTIONISM and LIES made out of WHOLE CLOTH perpetuated by their bought-n-paid-for corporomedia mouthpieces. DEMS in states across the country need to HAMMER their GOPher counterparts in this 2014 mid-term election cycle for supporting ANY proposal restricting voters to cast a legitimate balllot. IT'S NOT TOO LATE! YOU CAN HELP! GET ACTIVE! Write yer local rags, call into local talk shows, MAKE IT AN ISSUE! We CAN do this! Create the dialog in your own community to make sure EVERY ELEGIBLE VOTER can CAST a BALLOT. And VOLUNTEER NOW to WORK THE POLLS this November in yer precinct too. Many BoEs pay $$$ to volunteers to help out and RUN our Most Basic Democratic Function: VOTING. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! If We Da Peeps cannot Vote Da Bums Out what other recourse do we have left, eh? THEN At FDL Jeff Kaye explains how Obama Admits He Banned Only “Some” of the CIA’s Torture Techniques .........But there was a much more insidious and institutional salvage of torture by the U.S. government, which, rocked after the Abu Ghraib revelations, tried to hide and maintain its use of detention and interrogation techniques that relied on force, mental cruelty, fear, isolation, stress positions, sleep and sensory deprivation, and the use of drugs. Waterboarding, for all the attention given to that brutal form of torture, was never really a major component of U.S. torture. There were even some in the CIA who would be glad to see it go. Using solitary confinement, loud music and 24 hour bright lights, verbal abuse and humiliation, “dislocating the expectations” of prisoners by, for instance, moving them around every day so they never had a sense of solid place or safety or time to rest, or using drugs to disorient them — this is the kind of torture that leaves deep psychological wounds, and which the U.S. wanted to maintain in its interrogation arsenal. .....................Obama’s admission that he had only banned “some” of the previous administration’s torture techniques was not the first time the government has made such an admission, however obliquely. ............. But oddly, besides myself, only Obama seems to have noticed that not all the torture techniques were rescinded by him. The press and certainly the Senate and the House of Representatives have ignored entirely the use of torture in the Army Field Manual. While some bloggers and human rights groups have noted the anomaly of having the nation’s primary instructions on interrogation include torture techniques, and some have even called for a repeal of Appendix M or a rewriting of the field manual itself, none of these groups or individuals have made this a primary issue. Nor, when the controversy over the Senate report on the CIA torture program is discussed, is the ongoing presence of torture in the Army Field Manual ever mentioned. The failure to take on the entire torture apparatus is one reason accountability for U.S. torture cannot get sufficient traction.

And Robert Parry explains The Powerful ‘Group Think’ on Ukraine AND at Salon.com Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters: Why moral perversity of U.S. position in Gaza is stunning The carnage in Gaza continues after the latest collapse of cease-fire talks and over four weeks of asymmetrical bombardment by Israel. With the death of more than 2,000 Palestinians, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands more, the complicity of the American government has been exposed to the world as never before. Yet the mantra repeated ad nauseam by the U.S. government and media alike remains the same: Israel has a right to defend itself. The moral perversity of the U.S. position is stunning. How can the U.S. government ask Israel to be more careful about civilian lives while simultaneously arming and then rearming the IDF so it can more effectively inflict such devastation on an imprisoned and occupied people? The U.S. could act to stop the senseless slaughter but it won’t. Instead, it’s cheerleading. Members of Congress are mindlessly parroting Israeli talking points without a thought given to the Palestinian perspective or to preserving human life. .................. Pressure on American politicians to conform to the party line is abetted by skewed media coverage. For instance, CNN, while purporting to be a news channel, relentlessly churns out Israeli propaganda. It is easy for those of us who do not live under the tyranny of the occupation to condemn the military wing of Hamas for using randomly fired rockets that might cause civilian casualties in neighboring Israel, and I do unreservedly condemn it. Having said that, an occupied population has the legal right to resist the military of the occupier. The occupier has a legal obligation to protect the occupied. Under these circumstances the reporting on CNN is biased beyond all belief. Numerically, one can readily see the bias. Far more pro-Israel guests than pro-Palestinian experts are invited on air to make their case. .............. Staunchly pro-Israel voices like Oren’s have resoundingly proclaimed: Any resistance, violent or nonviolent, in fact any criticism of Israeli colonization and denial of Palestinian rights, is off limits. What they are advocating, in essence, is perpetual armed conflict until greater Israel is a fait accompli, and complete Israeli domination over any surviving Palestinians is accepted as a reasonable status quo. Commentators such as Oren feign interest in a two-state peaceful solution but they and the state they represent resist all attempts to implement such a plan. On a positive note, I take heart from the fact that support for Jewish Voice for Peace has skyrocketed over the last month as members of the American Jewish community, appalled at Israel’s actions, have looked for a place to register their concern. JVP advocates for an end to occupation and the siege on Gaza, for Palestinian rights – as dictated by international law – and peace with justice for Palestinians and Israelis alike. It primarily does so by educating people with basic facts and by using the tools of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions to apply pressure on Israel to cease its human rights abuses............... Good on Roger Waters! Read the rest! NEXT At TheGuardian.com Patrick Kingsley in Cairo tells us Egypt massacre was premeditated, says Human Rights Watch Egyptian security forces intentionally killed at least 817 protesters during last August's Rabaa massacre, in a premeditated attack equal to or worse than China's Tiananmen Square killings in 1989, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has argued in a report. The 195-page investigation based on interviews with 122 survivors and witnesses has found Egypt's police and army "systematically and deliberately killed largely unarmed protesters on political grounds" in actions that "likely amounted to crimes against humanity". The report recommends that several senior individuals within Egypt's security apparatus be investigated and, where appropriate, held to account for their role in the planning of both the Rabaa massacre and others that occurred last summer – including Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Egypt's then defence minister and new president. As head of the army at the time, Sisi had overall responsibility for the army's role at Rabaa, and has publicly acknowledged spending "very many long days to discuss all the details". ................ HRW concluded that the camp's estimated 85,000 members were not given enough time to leave before troops started firing; were prevented for most of the day from leaving via safe exits; and used firearms "in only a few instances, which do not justify the grossly disproportionate and premeditated lethal attacks on overwhelmingly peaceful protesters". The report documents scores of incidents where unarmed protesters were killed, often by snipers shooting from nearby buildings or, according to multiple witnesses, from helicopters flying overhead. ................. Also at The Nation William D. Cohan reveals Jamie Dimon’s $13 Billion Secret - The inside story of JPMorgan Chase’s landmark mortgage settlement .......... This, then, is the story of what happens when a hubristic CEO—often described as the reigning king of Wall Street—is confronted by a narrative he thinks he can control but ultimately cannot. It’s the tale of Jamie Dimon’s agenda and how it got derailed. But it is also the story of how the Justice Department has decided to handle the outrageous behavior of all the big Wall Street banks in the years leading up to the financial crisis. Unfortunately, it shows just how far the government is willing to go to avoid naming names, as well as to keep especially revelatory evidence of wrongdoing out of the hands of the American people. (Somehow, this is the new normal.) ......... Very long, too much to snip but well worth the time to read! In a related matter LA Times reporter E. Scott Reckard explains BofA reportedly in $17-billion settlement over toxic loan securities Bank of America Corp. has agreed to fork over nearly $17 billion to settle government claims over toxic mortgage securities that helped trigger the Great Recession, according to people close to the negotiations with the Justice Department. The agreement — $9 billion in cash penalties and the rest in mortgage modifications and other consumer relief — remained tentative Wednesday, these people said. It would be by far the largest in a series of billion-dollar settlements with the "too big to fail" banks over the subprime mortgage meltdown........ MARK KARLIN, EDITOR OF BUZZFLASH AT TRUTHOUT explains it this way Bank of America's $16.6 Billion Mortgage Fraud Agreement Is Another Public Relations Stunt. Also read Karlin's op-ed Most US Voters Have Nearly Zero Impact on National Policy, New Study Concludes referencing Allan J. Lichtman, a professor of history at American University and his post at TheHill.com. Good Items! Also at Salon.com Thomas Frank interviews Cornel West: “He posed as a progressive and turned out to be counterfeit. We ended up with a Wall Street presidency, a drone presidency” ......No, the thing is he posed as a progressive and turned out to be counterfeit. We ended up with a Wall Street presidency, a drone presidency, a national security presidency. The torturers go free. The Wall Street executives go free. The war crimes in the Middle East, especially now in Gaza, the war criminals go free. And yet, you know, he acted as if he was both a progressive and as if he was concerned about the issues of serious injustice and inequality and it turned out that he’s just another neoliberal centrist with a smile and with a nice rhetorical flair. And that’s a very sad moment in the history of the nation because we are—we’re an empire in decline. Our culture is in increasing decay. Our school systems are in deep trouble. Our political system is dysfunctional. Our leaders are more and more bought off with legalized bribery and normalized corruption in Congress and too much of our civil life. You would think that we needed somebody—a Lincoln-like figure who could revive some democratic spirit and democratic possibility......... Columbia University journalism professor Thomas B. Edsall explains The Expanding World of Poverty Capitalism in a NYT op-ed. .......... The recent drive toward privatization of government functions has turned traditional public services into profit-making enterprises as well. In addition to probation, municipal court systems are also turning collections over to a national network of companies like Sentinel that profit from service charges imposed on the men and women who are under court order to pay fees and fines, including traffic tickets (with the fees being sums tacked on by the court to fund administrative services). When they cannot pay these assessed fees and fines – plus collection charges imposed by the private companies — offenders can be sent to jail. ................ A February 2014 report by Human Rights Watch on private offender services found that “more than 1,000 courts in several US states delegate tremendous coercive power to companies that are often subject to little meaningful oversight or regulation. In many cases, the only reason people are put on probation is because they need time to pay off fines and court costs linked to minor crimes. In some of these cases, probation companies act more like abusive debt collectors than probation officer, charging the debtors for their services.” Human Rights Watch also found that in Georgia in 2012, in “a state of less than 10 million people, 648 courts assigned more than 250,000 cases to private probation companies.” The report notes that “there is virtually no transparency about the revenues of private probation companies” since “practically all of the industry’s firms are privately held and not subject to the disclosure requirements that bind publicly traded companies. No state requires probation companies to report their revenues, or by logical extension the amount of money they collect for themselves from probationers.”......... WOW! Read on! During the melee in Ferguson a few weeks back the paramilitay police were arresting journalists at a whim. FirstLook.org's Editor-in-Chirf John Cook posts Intercept Reporter Shot With Rubber Bullets and Arrested While Covering Ferguson Protests Intercept reporter Ryan Devereaux was arrested this morning while on the ground covering the protests in Ferguson, Mo. According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch photographer David Carson, who witnessed the apprehension, Ryan and a German reporter he was with were both taken into custody by members of a police tactical team. They were handcuffed and placed in a wagon, and Carson was told they were being taken to St. Louis County jail. ............... Third Update: Ryan’s post recounting his first night in Ferguson is here. As you can see, he now believes he was hit with a rubber bullet, and not a beanbag. I’ve updated the headline of this post to reflect that. IN a related matter HuffPoAOL's Katherine Fung writes about Maureen Dowd's op-ed in the NYT Sunday James Risen: Obama Is 'Greatest Enemy To Press Freedom In A Generation' Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter James Risen is not mincing words about President Barack Obama. Risen has been fighting the Obama administration's efforts to get him to testify about his sources for six years. The Department of Justice has ordered him to testify against former CIA agent Jeffrey Sterling, who it believes leaked information about a failed CIA operation in Iran that Risen reported on in his book. Risen recently lost his bid to have the Supreme Court revisit his case. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd spoke to Risen for her Sunday column "Where’s the Justice at Justice?" "How can he [Obama] use the Espionage Act to throw reporters and whistle-blowers in jail even as he defends the intelligence operatives who 'tortured some folks,' and coddles his C.I.A. chief, John Brennan, who spied on the Senate and then lied to the senators he spied on about it?" Dowd wrote. Risen had one word to describe Obama's actions: "hypocritical." "A lot of people still think this is some kind of game or signal or spin," he told Dowd. "They don’t want to believe that Obama wants to crack down on the press and whistle-blowers. But he does. He’s the greatest enemy to press freedom in a generation." Many others have joined Risen in his condemnation of the White House's campaign against leak cases. Over 100,000 people have signed a petition demanding that the government stop all legal action against Risen. Read Dowd's full article here. THE BTV LAST WORD goes to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (in TIME of all places) The Coming Race War Won’t Be About Race Will the recent rioting in Ferguson, Missouri, be a tipping point in the struggle against racial injustice, or will it be a minor footnote in some future grad student’s thesis on Civil Unrest in the Early Twenty-First Century? The answer can be found in May of 1970. You probably have heard of the Kent State shootings: on May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on student protesters at Kent State University. During those 13 seconds of gunfire, four students were killed and nine were wounded, one of whom was permanently paralyzed. The shock and outcry resulted in a nationwide strike of 4 million students that closed more than 450 campuses. Five days after the shooting, 100,000 protestors gathered in Washington, D.C. And the nation’s youth was energetically mobilized to end the Vietnam War, racism, sexism, and mindless faith in the political establishment. You probably haven’t heard of the Jackson State shootings. On May 14th, 10 days after Kent State ignited the nation, at the predominantly black Jackson State University in Mississippi, police killed two black students (one a high school senior, the other the father of an 18-month-old baby) with shotguns and wounded twelve others. There was no national outcry. The nation was not mobilized to do anything. That heartless leviathan we call History swallowed that event whole, erasing it from the national memory. And, unless we want the Ferguson atrocity to also be swallowed and become nothing more than an intestinal irritant to history, we have to address the situation not just as another act of systemic racism, but as what else it is: class warfare. ............... This fist-shaking of everyone’s racial agenda distracts America from the larger issue that the targets of police overreaction are based less on skin color and more on an even worse Ebola-level affliction: being poor. Of course, to many in America, being a person of color is synonymous with being poor, and being poor is synonymous with being a criminal. Ironically, this misperception is true even among the poor. And that’s how the status quo wants it. ................. MUCH MORE so go read the rest! Sorry again for the late post! The 1st Amendment is Our Permit Our permit to occupy is The First Amendment. Quickly sign the following statement which will be delivered to mayors, police chiefs and major media across the country:

Our permit to occupy public squares and parks is in The First Amendment, which affirms "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." When people across the Middle East occupied public squares, leaders in Washington mostly cheered those protesters and warned Middle Eastern governments not to use force to clear them. Those other societies don’t have a First Amendment. Yet Washington affirmed the universal right to assembly and protest. We do have a First Amendment. The force being used to clear nonviolent protesters from public squares in our country is unacceptable. It must stop.

NET NEUTRALITY! SaveTheInternet.com Declaration of Internet Freedom Tired of fighting bad bills like SOPA, PIPA and CISPA? Want to stand up against those who are trying to control what we do and say online? It's time for something different. A group of more than 1,500 organizations, academics, startup founders and tech innovators has come together to produce a Declaration of Internet Freedom, a set of five principles that put forward a positive vision of the open Internet. Our goal: Get millions of Internet users to sign on to this Declaration. Build political power for Internet users to make sure that we get a seat at the table whenever, and wherever, the future of the Internet is being decided. It's time to stop playing defense and start going on the offensive. The open Internet is central to people’s freedom to communicate, share, advocate and innovate in the 21st century. But powerful interests want to censor free speech, block the sharing of information, hinder innovation and control how Internet users get online. And all too often, people in power are making political decisions behind closed doors about how the Internet should operate — and they're doing this without the involvement of actual Internet users. The result: policies that could close down the open Internet and destroy our freedom to connect. It’s time for us to reclaim the Internet for its users. Take action now and sign the Declaration of Internet Freedom. ACTION! Stop the FCC from Breaking the Internet The Federal Communications Commission is proposing rules that would kill — rather than protect — Net Neutrality and allow rampant discrimination online. Under these rules, telecom giants like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon would be able to pick winners and losers online and discriminate against online content and applications. And no one would be able to do anything about it. We must stop the FCC from moving forward with these rules, which would give the green light to ISPs eager to crush Net Neutrality. The agency can preserve Net Neutrality only by designating broadband as a telecommunications service under the law. Anything else is an attack on our rights to connect and communicate. Tell FCC Chairman Wheeler to throw out his proposed rules. Demand nothing less than real Net Neutrality. SIGN NOW at Stop the FCC from Breaking the Internet at freepress.net NOW. Stop Media Consolidation! Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski is trying to change the agency’s ownership rules to pave the way for Murdoch to get exactly what he wants. Worse, Genachowski and Murdoch are keeping this all very hush-hush, hoping you won't notice. These changes wouldn’t just benefit Murdoch. If the FCC proposal passes, one company could own the major daily newspaper, two TV stations and up to eight radio stations in your town. And that one company could be your Internet provider, too. What is the FCC thinking?!? We can still stop the agency from taking this perilous step — but we have less than a month to do it. By taking action, you’re joining a movement of millions who are working to stop big media from getting even bigger. Please take action today. Every time you lift up your mobile phone you know it’s there. It is very hard to turn the clock back, in fact it is impossible, but we need to be aware of the adverse health effects so that we can have the choice of taking precautions against the exposures. How we could have possibly thought that putting microwaves to our brain was safe. We just don’t fully understand what we’re doing. "Resonance: Beings of Frequency" is the first documentary to investigate the actual mechanisms by which mobile phone technology can cause cancer. The film takes a deeper look at how humanity is reacting to the most profound environmental change the planet has ever seen. Read more HERE!!

BO POLNY: The Secret 21 Year Gold Cycle That Leads to World Commodity Bull Market Breakouts in 2014 by The Doc— Get Ready for a Fall 2014 World Commodity Bull Market Breakout! Cycle analysis indicates the third and final 7-year tidal wave of the 21 year Grand Tsunami Gold Bull Market cycle began this past July 2014; Gold has been consolidating in the 7th year of sabbatical rest within a Symmetric Triangle and one final push lower is still possible before a breakout arrives this fall 2014 that lead to World Commodity Bull Market Breakouts! There remains a very probable possibility of a commodity inflationary price spike and should this inflationary spike occur, Gold would easily achieve $2000 by year end. If no inflationary spike arrives in 2014 (as cycle analysis favors it will occur) expect Gold to still close the year closer to $2000 than $1300. The 7-year Gold cycle dictates a THIRD Gold Bull Market breakout comes this fall 2014 and runs for the next 7-years into the year 2020-2021! This THIRD and final Bull Market cycle will be nothing like the prior two 7-year cycles. Do not expect either of the 2 prior 7-year cycle tops to match the THIRD. In the end, the THIRD cycle will once again add up to 7-years and all 3 cycles will add up to one grand 21-year tsunami as Gold hits $10,000+! Click here for more from Bo Polny on the 21 year super cycle & the coming 2014 gold breakout.........
A “Ring of Steel” – The UK Spends $80 Million on a Massive Fence to Protect Politicians Ahead of NATO Summit by Michael Krieger —
Although the latest threat level rates the risk of an attack on the UK to “highly likely,” Home Secretary Theresa May stated that “there was no evidence to suggest one was imminent.” Well then. It makes you wonder if the the change in threat level is being used in part to justify the extraordinary $80 million sum spent on building a fortress around the Newport and Cardiff city centers in Wales, which many are describing as “similar to the Berlin Wall,” or a “zoo,” in an unprecedented display of protection for many of the world’s most corrupt politicians. Is There Capitalism After Cronyism? by Charles Hugh Smith — The more the Status Quo pursues the same old Keynesian Cargo Cult script of central planning and free money for financiers, the more self-liquidating the system becomes. Judging by the mainstream media, the most pressing problems facing capitalism are:
    • 1) income inequality, the basis of Thomas Piketty’s bestseller Capital in the Twenty-First Century, and
    • 2) the failure of laissez-faire markets to regulate their excesses, a common critique encapsulated by Paul Craig Roberts’ recent book The Failure of Laissez Faire Capitalism.
These critiques (and many similar diagnoses) reach a widely shared conclusion: capitalism must be reformed to save it from itself. • Scott Horton Radio Show Progress Report: All right, yall, welcome back to the show to the inaugural Scott Horton Show progress report! It’s been an eventful year since the show and I (amicably) parted ways with Antiwar.com, so I thought I would highlight just a few of the show’s important milestones, as well as preview some of the exciting projects to look for in the near future. ........ The show on Pacifica KPFK 90.7 FM in L.A., still called Antiwar Radio, has now moved to join their Sunday morning public affairs line up (8:30 am pt - http://kpfk.org), and remains the largest source of listeners, with 15,000-20,000 people tuning in weekly. The future: Liberty Express Radio is growing and bringing me along for the ride. The great Charles Goyette hooked me up with Alan Butler and the Liberty Express earlier this year, and what has been the daily replay there from 3-5 eastern time has become my best listened-to show. And now they’re adding my friend Tom Woods to the lineup from 2-3 PM. That does it. I’m making the switch! Starting Monday, October 14, the live show is moving to 3-5 PM Eastern time on LibertyExpressRadio.com, as well as NoAgenda and my own stream....... New show hours effective 5/26/2014: 12-3 PM Eastern!
