Explosions in WVA? Oh yes, the Massey coal mine explosion, that is. Let's take a brief moment to look at the history of what's know today as Massey Energy. Here's a short timeline:
- 1920: A.T. Massey Coal Company (ATM) is formed.
- 1972: E. Morgan Massey becomes president of ATM.
- 1974: The company is sold to St. Joe Minerals.
- 1980: Royal Dutch/Shell Group and St. Joe form the Massey Coal Partnership.
- 1981: The Fluor Corporation acquires St. Joe.
- 1987: ATM becomes a wholly owned Fluor subsidiary.
- 1990: Don Blankenship named President
- 2000: The Fluor Corporation is split into two publicly traded companies, with the coal operations becoming Massey Energy Company.

Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon.
