Snowed in Russia We begin with this STASI UPDATE: At TruthDig.com Robert Scheer explains The Good Germans in Government What a disgrace. The U.S. government, cheered on by much of the media, launches an international manhunt to capture a young American whose crime is that he dared challenge the excess of state power. Read the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and tell me that Edward Snowden is not a hero in the mold of those who founded this republic. Check out the Nuremberg war crime trials and ponder our current contempt for the importance of individual conscience as a civic obligation. Yes, Snowden has admitted that he violated the terms of his employment at Booz Allen Hamilton, which has the power to grant security clearances as well as profiting mightily from spying on the American taxpayers who pay to be spied on without ever being told that is where their tax dollars are going. Snowden violated the law in the same way that Daniel Ellsberg did when, as a RAND Corporation employee, he leaked the damning Pentagon Papers study of the Vietnam War that the taxpayers had paid for but were not allowed to read. In both instances, violating a government order was mandated by the principle that the United States trumpeted before the world in the Nuremberg war crime trials of German officers and officials. As Principle IV of what came to be known as the Nuremberg Code states: “The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him.” That is a heavy obligation, and the question we should be asking is not why do folks like Ellsberg, Snowden and Bradley Manning do the right thing, but rather why aren’t we bringing charges against the many others with access to such damning data of government malfeasance who remain silent? ........ Go read the rest of Scheer! More on this later.
WATCH THE BIG PICTURE on RT Thursday featuring Ring of Fire hosts Mike Papantonio & Bobby Kennedy, Jr. At ThinkProgress Justice blog Igor Volsky tells us Civil Rights Icon John Lewis Tears Into Supreme Court For Gutting Voting Rights Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) urged Congress to enact legislation that would protect the freedom to vote on Tuesday, just hours after the Supreme Court struck down a portion of the Voting Rights Act that stopped discriminatory voting laws from going into effect in areas of the country with histories of disenfranchisement. In a 5 to 4 opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the Court ruled that Section 4, which establishes the formula that determines which jurisdictions are subject to federal “preclearance” of changes in election laws, is unconstitutional. Congress will now have to decide which areas of the country still deserve additional federal scrutiny. “These men that voted to strip the Voting Rights Act of its power, they never stood in unmovable lines,” Lewis told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell. “They never had to pass a so-called literacy test. It took us almost 100 years to get where we are today. So will it take another 100 years to fix it, to change it?” he asked. Watch it: at the link! (WARNING: the interview is with Mrs. Alan Greenspan!) Michael Isakoff at NBC News is reporting General in leak probe quit Pentagon post suddenly, citing health reasons The four-star general who is the target of a leak investigation suddenly resigned from his Pentagon advisory job in January for “health reasons” – just as FBI investigators were focusing on him, according to legal sources. As NBC News revealed Thursday, retired Marine Gen. James “Hoss” Cartwright has received a target letter informing him that he’s under investigation for allegedly leaking information about a massive U.S. cyberattack on Iran’s nuclear facilities using the computer worm Stuxnet, according to legal sources. ...... Here's Isakoff's Thursday item Ex-Pentagon general target of leak investigation, sources say. Greg Miller and Sari Horwitz at WaPo follow up with Justice Dept. targets general in leak probe A retired four-star Marine Corps general who served as the nation’s second-ranking military officer is a target of a Justice Department investigation into a leak of information about a covert U.S.-Israeli cyberattack on Iran’s nuclear program, a senior Obama administration official said. Retired Gen. James E. “Hoss” Cartwright served as deputy chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was part of President Obama’s inner circle on a range of critical national security issues before he retired in 2011. Cartwright, who helped launch that campaign under President Bush and pushed for its escalation under Obama, was recently informed that he was a “target” of a wide-ranging Justice Department probe into the leak, according to the senior official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Justice Department officials declined to comment on the case, as did Marcia Murphy, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Maryland, which is in charge of the investigation. Neither Cartwright nor his attorney, former White House counsel Greg Craig, responded to requests for comment. The revelation, which was first reported by NBC News, means that an administration that has already launched more leaks prosecutions than all of its predecessors combined is now focused on one of its own. Since Obama took office, the Justice Department has prosecuted or charged eight people for alleged violations of the Espionage Act. ..... The investigation into the Stuxnet leak was launched in June 2012 by Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and gained momentum in recent months amid indications that prosecutors were putting pressure on a range of current and former senior officials suspected of involvement. ..... Pepe Escobar at Asia Times discusses Our man in Quito So it's going to be Our Man in Quito. The narrative may not be as elegant as Graham Greene's, but the plot certainly beats the Bourne trilogy - because it's happening live, in real time, right in front of our eyes. It takes a former CIA asset to beat US "intelligence" - more like intel deprivation. ..... Asia Times Online had also learned from another source close to Snowden's tight circle that a short stint in Hong Kong was always part of Plan A; he never intended to ask for political asylum in either Hong Kong or China. He was already focused on a "third country". What he did was to use Hong Kong as an ideal platform to unveil the inner workings of the Orwellian/Panopticon US surveillance state. First a set of general revelations to The Guardian. Then he went underground to prepare his escape - as he knew Washington would come after him with all guns (drones?) blazing. And then, a final set of revelations to the South China Morning Post closely focused on Asia and China. When Washington woke up to it, he was already out of the building. Jason Bourne, eat your heart out. Snowden was not "allowed to slip away". It all revolved around a meticulously timed operation involving Snowden, the Hong Kong government and WikiLeaks mediation. ......... The predictable fury across Capitol Hill, with plenty of "hostile nations" rhetoric coupled with the inevitable demonizing of Russian President Vladimir Putin, not to mention NSA spy chief General Keith Alexander, among the usual platitudes about "defending this nation from a terrorist attack", depicting Snowden as an " individual who is not acting, in my opinion, with noble intent" - this all reads like lazily written lines in a cheap spy thriller. For the Empire, getting a bloody eye is not taken lightly. Washington is left with wishful thinking that Moscow might detain Snowden. Rubbish. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had even advanced that Russia would consider granting political asylum if Snowden asked for it. And what about this priceless quote from Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman? "I know nothing." Haha! Shades of Sgt. Schultz from Hogan's Heroes! At RT we hear from former KGB Lt. Colonel Vladimir Putin: Snowden still in Moscow airport, won't be extradited, free to go anywhere Former NSA contractor Snowden remains in the transit zone of a Moscow airport. President Putin said that Snowden never crossed the Russian border and doesn’t fall under any extradition treaty. He called accusations against Russia “nonsense and rubbish.” “It is true that Snowden has arrived to Moscow, and it really came as a surprise for us. He arrived as a transit passenger, and didn't need a [Russian] visa, or any other documents. As a transit passenger he is entitled to buy a ticket and fly to wherever he wants,” Vladimir Putin said as he spoke to journalists in Finland. ...... “We can only extradite any foreign citizens to such countries with which we have signed the appropriate international agreements on criminal extradition” ...... "Snowden is a free person. The sooner he chooses his final destination, the better it is for him and Russia" “Just like Snowden, he considers himself a rights advocate and fights for sharing information. Ask yourself: should or should not people like these be extradited to be later put to jail?” “In any case, I would like not to deal with such issues because it is like shearing a pig: there's lots of squealing and little fleece,” he said. ........ That Vlad sure has a way with words! Pepe Escobar also points to this op-ed by Valerie Plame Wilson and Joe Wilson at Guardian UK's "Comment is Free" who know a thing or three about "leaks" The NSA's metastasised intelligence-industrial complex is ripe for abuse Let's be absolutely clear about the news that the NSA collects massive amounts of information on US citizens – from emails, to telephone calls, to videos, under the Prism program and other Fisa court orders: this story has nothing to do with Edward Snowden. As interesting as his flight to Hong Kong might be, the pole-dancing girlfriend, and interviews from undisclosed locations, his fate is just a sideshow to the essential issues of national security versus constitutional guarantees of privacy, which his disclosures have surfaced in sharp relief. Snowden will be hunted relentlessly and, when finally found, with glee, brought back to the US in handcuffs and severely punished. (If Private Bradley Manning's obscene conditions while incarcerated are any indication, it won't be pleasant for Snowden either, even while awaiting trial.) Snowden has already been the object of scorn and derision from the Washington establishment and mainstream media, but, once again, the focus is misplaced on the transiently shiny object. The relevant issue should be: what exactly is the US government doing in the people's name to "keep us safe" from terrorists? ...... The shock and surprise that Snowden exposed these secrets is hard to understand when over 1.4 million Americans hold "top secret" security clearances. When that many have access to sensitive information, is it really so difficult to envision a leak? We are now dealing with a vast intelligence-industrial complex that is largely unaccountable to its citizens. This alarming, unchecked growth of the intelligence sector and the increasingly heavy reliance on subcontractors to carry out core intelligence tasks – now estimated to account for approximately 60% of the intelligence budget – have intensified since the 9/11 attacks and what was, arguably, our regrettable over-reaction to them. The roots of this trend go back at least as far as the Reagan era, when the political right became obsessed with limiting government and denigrating those who worked for the public sector. ....... There are no J Edgar Hoover-like "enemy lists" … yet. But it is not so difficult to envision a scenario where any of us has a link, via a friend of a friend, to someone on the terrorist watchlist. What then? You may have no idea who this person is, but a supercomputer in Fort Meade (or, soon, at the Utah Data Center near Salt Lake City) will have made this connection. And then you could have some explaining to do to an over-zealous prosecutor. ........ As it now stands, these programs are ripe for abuse unless we establish ground rules and barriers between authentic national security interests and potential political chicanery. ...... Good item! GAP Releases Statement on Snowden and NSA Last week, the Government Accountability Project (GAP) released a statement about the classified disclosures made by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden. GAP’s statement is required reading for those interested in how Snowden’s case fits into the larger context of federal whistleblowing. Read more at the GAP. Key points in report:
    I. SNOWDEN IS A WHISTLEBLOWER.
    II. SNOWDEN IS THE SUBJECT OF CLASSIC WHISTLEBLOWER RETALIATION.
    III. THE ISSUE IS THE MESSAGE AND NOT THE MESSENGER.
    IV. PERVASIVE SURVEILLANCE DOES NOT MEET THE STANDARD FOR CLASSIFIED INFORMATION.
    V. THE PUBLIC HAS A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO KNOW.
    VI. THERE IS A CLEAR HISTORY OF REPRISAL AGAINST NSA WHISTLEBLOWERS.
    VII. WE ARE WITNESSING THE CRIMINALIZATION OF WHISTLEBLOWING.
    VIII. IN THE SURVEILLANCE STATE, THE ENEMY IS THE WHISTLEBLOWER.
WOW! The Electronic Freedom Foundation has now posted a comprehensive Timeline of NSA Domestic Spying. Just click on any of the items for more details. Must read! In an interview last week JULIAN ASSANGE recommended everyone read Jonathan Landay's article at Reuters on the drone program Obama’s drone war kills ‘others,’ not just al Qaida leaders from April. At the end of Greenwald's Monday interview with Amy Gooodman last Monday he recommends everyone read this report in McClatchy by Marisa Taylor and Jonathan S. Landay Obama’s crackdown views leaks as aiding enemies of U.S. Even before a former U.S. intelligence contractor exposed the secret collection of Americans’ phone records, the Obama administration was pressing a government-wide crackdown on security threats that requires federal employees to keep closer tabs on their co-workers and exhorts managers to punish those who fail to report their suspicions. President Barack Obama’s unprecedented initiative, known as the Insider Threat Program, is sweeping in its reach. It has received scant public attention even though it extends beyond the U.S. national security bureaucracies to most federal departments and agencies nationwide, including the Peace Corps, the Social Security Administration and the Education and Agriculture departments. It emphasizes leaks of classified material, but catchall definitions of “insider threat” give agencies latitude to pursue and penalize a range of other conduct. Government documents reviewed by McClatchy illustrate how some agencies are using that latitude to pursue unauthorized disclosures of any information, not just classified material. They also show how millions of federal employees and contractors must watch for “high-risk persons or behaviors” among co-workers and could face penalties, including criminal charges, for failing to report them. Leaks to the media are equated with espionage. “Hammer this fact home . . . leaking is tantamount to aiding the enemies of the United States,” says a June 1, 2012, Defense Department strategy for the program that was obtained by McClatchy. ........ The program could make it easier for the government to stifle the flow of unclassified and potentially vital information to the public, while creating toxic work environments poisoned by unfounded suspicions and spurious investigations of loyal Americans, according to these current and former officials and experts. Some non-intelligence agencies already are urging employees to watch their co-workers for “indicators” that include stress, divorce and financial problems. “It was just a matter of time before the Department of Agriculture or the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) started implementing, ‘Hey, let’s get people to snitch on their friends.’ The only thing they haven’t done here is reward it,” said Kel McClanahan, a Washington lawyer who specializes in national security law. “I’m waiting for the time when you turn in a friend and you get a $50 reward. ........ Much more! See Landay's interview on DN! below! Michael Calderone at HuffPoAOL explains last week's Glenn Greenwald interview on Meet The David (he of the Karl Rove Dance) Glenn Greenwald: 'Meet The Press' Interview Validates 'Incestuous' Washington Media Critique For years, Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald has argued that journalists in Washington often seem too cozy with the political figures they’re supposed to hold accountable and too quick to amplify the government’s perspective on national security. "Meet the Press" host David Gregory’s suggestion Sunday that Greenwald “aided and abetted” NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, his source for a series of bombshell stories, only seemed to validate that viewpoint. “At some level, I feel like it's Christmas and I’ve been given the greatest, best gift that I could wish for,” Greenwald told HuffPost Monday by phone from Rio de Janeiro. “My critique of the D.C. media has long been that instead of being adversaries to government power -- to the government and political power -- they’re servants to it and mouthpieces for it.” Greenwald said that Gregory was doing the work of the Justice Department by putting "together a theory in public about why I, as a journalist, should be prosecuted," along with or "call[ing] into question that I’m a journalist at all." That interview, he said, exemplified the "critique that they’re so in bed with the circles of political power over which they’re supposed to acting as watchdogs -- that they really have become nothing more than just appendages." ....... "To the extent that you have aided and abetted Snowden, even in his current movements, why shouldn't you, Mr. Greenwald, be charged with a crime?" Gregory asked. ..... During Sunday's broadcast, Greenwald expressed surprise that “anybody who would call themselves a journalist would publicly muse about whether or not other journalists should be charged with felonies.” Gregory responded that the "question of who's a journalist may be up to a debate with regard to what you're doing.”..... While Greenwald came to the media world with an activist background, his recent actions concerning the NSA coverage –- reporting, expressing a point of view, maintaining a source relationship –- would fall under journalism. ...... Greenwald said he had no objection to being asked about whether he should be arrested, given that some political and media figures have suggested it. The problem, Greenwald said, is that Gregory seemed to endorse the idea himself, and “embedded into his question this completely baseless, reckless assumption that I had aided and abetted him.” “It’s like saying, to the extent that you molested children, should you be arrested as a pedophile?” he continued. “It assumes that I’ve done something that he has no evidence to suggest I’ve actually done. It’s an accusatory question. It’s not just a question; it’s an accusation.” ...... More! David Sirota at Salon.com picks up on this asking Why shouldn’t David Gregory be charged with a crime? Two weeks into the hullabaloo surrounding whistle-blower Edward Snowden and Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald, one thing is clear: They did not just reveal potentially serious crimes perpetrated by the government — including possible perjury, unlawful spying and unconstitutional surveillance. They also laid bare in historic fashion the powerful double standards that now define most U.S. media coverage of the American government — the kind that portray those who challenge power as criminals, and those who worship it as heroes deserving legal immunity. Indeed, after “Meet the Press” host David Gregory’s instantly notorious performance yesterday, it is clear Snowden’s revelations so brazenly exposed these double standards that it will be difficult for the Washington press corps to ever successfully hide them again. The best way to see these double standards is to ponder 10 simple questions.
  • 1. During that “Meet the Press” discussion yesterday of Greenwald publishing stories about Snowden’s disclosures, Gregory asked Greenwald, “Why shouldn’t you, Mr. Greenwald, be charged with a crime?” Beyond the odiousness of a supposed journalist like Gregory seeming to endorse criminal charges against journalists for the alleged crime of committing journalism, there’s an even more poignant question suggested by Mother Jones’ David Corn: Why hasn’t David Gregory asked reporters at the Washington Post, the Associated Press and Bloomberg News the same question, considering their publication of similar leaks? Is it because Greenwald is seen as representing a form of journalism too adversarial toward the government, while those establishment outlets are still held in Good Standing by Washington? ......
  • 3. Later during the “Meet the Press’” discussion of Greenwald’s reporting, NBC’s Chuck Todd demanded to know, “How much was (Greenwald) involved in the plot? … What was his role — did he have a role beyond simply being a receiver of this information? And is he going to have to answer those questions?” Why did Todd not ask that same question of reporters at the Washington Post, the Associated Press and Bloomberg News? Again, is it because Greenwald is seen as representing a form of journalism too adversarial toward the government, while those establishment outlets are still held in Good Standing by Washington? .....

Former NSA intelligence analyst veteran Russel Tice on The Corbett Report Whistleblower: NSA wiretapped Obama, Petraeus, Alito, others Last week, NSA whistleblower Russell Tice conducted interviews on BoilingFrogsPost and The Corbett Report where he revealed shocking new details of the NSA spying scandal. In addition to detailing how the NSA is collecting and storing the content of all electronic communications passing through the United States, he also revealed for the first time some of the specific targets of past NSA wiretapping operations, including senior Congressional leaders, the former White House Press Secretary, high-ranking military generals, the entire Supreme Court, and even then-Senator from Illinois and future President, Barack Obama. ....... This week's Brick TeeVee LAST WORD comes from our At-Large BTV Editor ms_in_la who explains As for what to "buy" with Snowden and CISPA or any other concepts about the story...the good thing is all we really have to do is wait, watch and see the eventual outcome. Then a bunch of peeps will be nodding..... and the rest will be ...wondering. If CISPA is a slam dunk triggered by all this, then it would be a hard connection to dismiss, given the "helping hand" of the corp press. We can only watch, wait, and see. Proof. Pudding. That part is relatively easy. Like I said earlier....it could go the opposite direction. Not something we often see, but theres slways an outside chance....If the after effect is that we will have more press freedom. Less surveillance, more civil rights and more checks and balances to prevent it from getting this egregious again....then that would be a clear Net Good result. And Snowden's "hero" status would be rightfully earned, and his mission would have accomplished something progressive that would eventually foster vastly improved policies. The Net Bad result would be further clamp down on both press and privacy freedoms (what little is left of them) Increased surveillance (is it even possible?) and of course, draconian CISPA. Time will tell. So hold on you your hats and see what happens next. We'll try to get you the most relevant stories without the "shiny objects" the mass corporomedia try to point us in. SAD WEEK WEEK AT THE BRICK TEEVEE COMPOUND: Two weeks ago we found out our favorite "animal kingdom" correspondent Dee Jay Da Wabbit was diagnosed with a neoplasia in her abdomen. Dee Jay came to us when she was about one year old and has been a constant companion to us ever since. She left us last Wednesday evening on her way to Rainbow Bridge. She was Eight. From taking naps with us and doing the "wabbit dance" around our feet when we answered the phone to greeting us when we came home and waking us in the mornings by jumping on us she was a Fun Bun up until the end. We made sure she got to sit outside in the grass and feel the sunshine and breezes and listen to all the brids singing duing her final days with us. Dee Jay was our deep friend and she affected us in ways too many to number. And all those who have had a non-human friend know exactly what we mean: caring, empathy, understanding, peacefulness, fun and some conflict too. We read our critters and they read us back. And we and they find comfort in each other although we as "parents" ultimately control their number one need - food - which we give every day with love, just part of our budget we don't question, no matter how cash-challenged we may be: Our critter friends get a seat at the dinner table just like the rest of us. Because they ARE Family. And our closest friends. Our critters we keep are fellow travelers on this Pale Blue Dot Our memories of those lost to time keep them alive. The Crew made a lovely box out of rough-hewn mahogany and stained it a deep dark red. We put her to rest next to the pine tree we shared those last days, at dusk Saturday night, about the same time she left us for Rainbow Bridge just days before. As our BTV Wisconsin correspondent donjo offered, "The hurt will go away, but the memories will linger." And BTV correspondent Maddy explained, we soon "will only remember the joy you had with her as the pain slowly fades away." Lastly ms_in_la wrote, "I'm sure Dee Jay will be enormously touched and grateful that you took such care for her not only in her life when you stood to benefit from her company...but in her death when you were filled with heartbreak. That my friend is love." So give all yer critters a Big Hug today from Dee Jay and all of us at Brick TeeVee. The Rainbow Bridge awaits us all.

The 1st Amendment is Our Permit Our permit to occupy is The First Amendment. Quickly sign the following statement which will be delivered to mayors, police chiefs and major media across the country:

    Our permit to occupy public squares and parks is in The First Amendment, which affirms "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." When people across the Middle East occupied public squares, leaders in Washington mostly cheered those protesters and warned Middle Eastern governments not to use force to clear them. Those other societies don’t have a First Amendment. Yet Washington affirmed the universal right to assembly and protest. We do have a First Amendment. The force being used to clear nonviolent protesters from public squares in our country is unacceptable. It must stop.

NET NEUTRALITY! SaveTheInternet.com Declaration of Internet Freedom Tired of fighting bad bills like SOPA, PIPA and CISPA? Want to stand up against those who are trying to control what we do and say online? It's time for something different. A group of more than 1,500 organizations, academics, startup founders and tech innovators has come together to produce a Declaration of Internet Freedom, a set of five principles that put forward a positive vision of the open Internet. Our goal: Get millions of Internet users to sign on to this Declaration. Build political power for Internet users to make sure that we get a seat at the table whenever, and wherever, the future of the Internet is being decided. It's time to stop playing defense and start going on the offensive. The open Internet is central to people’s freedom to communicate, share, advocate and innovate in the 21st century. But powerful interests want to censor free speech, block the sharing of information, hinder innovation and control how Internet users get online. And all too often, people in power are making political decisions behind closed doors about how the Internet should operate — and they're doing this without the involvement of actual Internet users. The result: policies that could close down the open Internet and destroy our freedom to connect. It’s time for us to reclaim the Internet for its users. Take action now and sign the Declaration of Internet Freedom. ACTION! Meet the New CISPA. Same as the Old CISPA. Last year, thanks to a public outcry, the effort to pass overreaching cybersecurity legislation stalled in the Senate. Now supporters have reintroduced the House version of that legislation — the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA). The “new” version is in fact identical to the original CISPA — and poses the same threat to our digital civil liberties. If CISPA becomes law, it will be a major blow to our online privacy. But more than that, CISPA’s passage would have a chilling effect on our freedom to connect online. We won’t feel as free to state unpopular opinions, or to speak truth to power, if we know that Big Brother could get a feed of everything we say and do. This is not what the free and open Internet is about. We must tell Congress: Vote NO on CISPA and bury this bill for good.

But we want to enlist YOU too. Send us accounts of unbalanced coverage in the national media and in your local newspapers and television. Call up reporters, editors, assignment people and tell them when they are under-representing the views of the American Majority. We should have at least half the experts, pundits, quotes and real people represented in their coverage. In a debate as important as the one we are going into, we can’t allow the media to ignore the American Majority. Much more at www.ourfuture.org MOVE TO AMEND! www.movetoamend.org SIGN HERE NOW! REPRESENT.US IT’S TIME TO GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS SO THE GOVERNMENT CAN REPRESENT US. Represent.Us is a fresh campaign to pass the American Anti-Corruption Act: a law that would overhaul campaign finance, impose strict lobbying and conflict of interest laws, and end secret political money. We are mobilizing millions of Americans — conservatives and progressives, young and old, every issue group fighting K Street, online and offline — to join this campaign. Represent.Us is not just building a movement to pass the Act. The campaign will use hard-hitting accountability tactics to unseat politicians who fail to endorse the Act. If passed, the Act will completely reshape American politics and policy-making and give people a voice. FeedingAmerica.org complied these Child Hunger Facts According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 16.7 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life. Although food insecurity is harmful to any individual, it can be particularly devastating among children due to their increased vulnerability and the potential for long-term consequences.
  • 16.7 million children lived in food insecure households in 2011.[i]
  • 20% or more of the child population in 36 states and D.C. lived in food insecure households in 2010. The District of Columbia (30.7%) and Oregon (29.0%) had the highest rates of children in households without consistent access to food.[ii]
  • In 2010, the top five states with the highest rate of food insecure children under 18 are the District of Columbia, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, & Florida.[iii]
  • In 2010, the top five states with the lowest rate of food insecure children under 18 are North Dakota, New Hampshire, Virginia, Minnesota, & Massachusetts. [iv]
You can get involved with FeedingAmerica.org HERE. GOPher War Against Food Stamps: Paul Krugman wrote this column last month. From the Mouths of Babes ..... Food stamps have played an especially useful — indeed, almost heroic — role in recent years. In fact, they have done triple duty. First, as millions of workers lost their jobs through no fault of their own, many families turned to food stamps to help them get by — and while food aid is no substitute for a good job, it did significantly mitigate their misery. Food stamps were especially helpful to children who would otherwise be living in extreme poverty, defined as an income less than half the official poverty line. ....... Wait, we’re not done yet. Food stamps greatly reduce food insecurity among low-income children, which, in turn, greatly enhances their chances of doing well in school and growing up to be successful, productive adults. So food stamps are in a very real sense an investment in the nation’s future — an investment that in the long run almost surely reduces the budget deficit, because tomorrow’s adults will also be tomorrow’s taxpayers. So what do Republicans want to do with this paragon of programs? First, shrink it; then, effectively kill it. ...... And why must food stamps be cut? We can’t afford it, say politicians like Representative Stephen Fincher, a Republican of Tennessee, who backed his position with biblical quotations — and who also, it turns out, has personally received millions in farm subsidies over the years. These cuts are, however, just the beginning of the assault on food stamps. Remember, Representative Paul Ryan’s budget is still the official G.O.P. position on fiscal policy, and that budget calls for converting food stamps into a block grant program with sharply reduced spending. If this proposal had been in effect when the Great Recession struck, the food stamp program could not have expanded the way it did, which would have meant vastly more hardship, including a lot of outright hunger, for millions of Americans, and for children in particular. ..... Billy House at The Atlantic asks and answers How Did the Farm Bill Just Fail So Spectacularly? Partisan accusations of broken promises erupted Thursday as a version of a House five-year farm bill was defeated in stunning fashion, 195-234, with 62 Republicans joining a majority of Democrats against the bill. Blame was being cast mostly on the bill's huge cut to the food stamp program, exacerbated by a late Republican amendment that some Democrats -- who may otherwise still have voted for the wider bill -- felt was too punitive in forcing work requirements for food-stamp recipients. ....... In fact, Republican aides had expressed confidence in recent days it would pass, even as they knew many Republicans did not believe it cut enough from the food-stamp program. Outside pressure from some conservative groups, including the political arm of the Heritage Foundation, kept the heat on for Republicans to reject what they called a wasteful, nearly $1 trillion bill, even though the House bill would have cut projected spending in farm and nutrition programs by more than $40 billion over the next 10 years. About $20.5 billion would have come from cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps. The Obama Administration had given that as one reason why the president would not support the House bill. ....... Brick TeeVee contributor ljm explainsUGH. How many more of these GOPher/Koch/CoC canards will the peeps believe? In a related matter on the ongoing hunger strike in Gitmo George J. Annas, J.D., M.P.H., Sondra S. Crosby, M.D., and Leonard H. Glantz, J.D. co-authored this letter in the New England Journal of Medicine Guantanamo Bay: A Medical Ethics–free Zone? that begins American physicians have not widely criticized medical policies at the Guantanamo Bay detainment camp that violate medical ethics. We believe they should. Actions violating medical ethics, taken on behalf of the government, devalue medical ethics for all physicians. The ongoing hunger strike at Guantanamo by as many as 100 of the 166 remaining prisoners presents a stark challenge to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to resist the temptation to use military physicians to “break” the strike through force-feeding. ....... See DN! Tuesday with an interview with Dr. Annas. And in an unbelievable move Executive at Monsanto Wins Global Food Honor writes Andrew Pollock at the NYT When it comes to agriculture, the World Food Prize is the equivalent of the Oscars. This year, the prestigious award went the mastermind behind Monsanto’s big move into genetically modified crops. In foodie terms, that is like a commercial blockbuster winning best picture rather than an independent, artsy film. ....... On Wednesday the World Food Prize Foundation said the honor and the $250,000 cash prize would be shared by Robert T. Fraley, Monsanto’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, and two other scientists, Marc Van Montagu of Belgium and Mary-Dell Chilton of the United States. The foundation said the work of the three scientists, who helped devise a way to insert foreign genes into plants, led to the development of higher-yielding crops that can resist insects, disease and extremes of climate. ........ The [GMO] crops’ role in increasing yields and helping farming adapt to climate change is still subject to some debate. One study organized by the World Bank and United Nations concluded in 2008 that genetically modified crops would play only a small role in fighting world hunger. The World Food Prize has been criticized in the past for favoring industrial agriculture. The foundation that administers the prize has received contributions from companies, including a $5 million pledge from Monsanto in 2008. Eric Holt-GimĂ©nez, executive director of Food First, a food policy research organization in Oakland, Calif., said the World Food Prize’s “growing obsession” with biotechnology “ignores the documented successes” of nonindustrial methods of farming. ...... For one example of "nonindustrial methods of farming" watch this video at UTOOB Greening the Desert At Rolling Stone Matt Taibbi finds The Last Mystery of the Financial Crisis It's long been suspected that ratings agencies like Moody's and Standard & Poor's helped trigger the meltdown. A new trove of embarrassing documents shows how they did it. ......... Thanks to a mountain of evidence gathered for a pair of major lawsuits by the San Diego-based law firm Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, documents that for the most part have never been seen by the general public, we now know that the nation's two top ratings companies, Moody's and S&P, have for many years been shameless tools for the banks, willing to give just about anything a high rating in exchange for cash. In incriminating e-mail after incriminating e-mail, executives and analysts from these companies are caught admitting their entire business model is crooked. "Lord help our fucking scam . . . this has to be the stupidest place I have worked at," writes one Standard & Poor's executive. "As you know, I had difficulties explaining 'HOW' we got to those numbers since there is no science behind it," confesses a high-ranking S&P analyst. "If we are just going to make it up in order to rate deals, then quants [quantitative analysts] are of precious little value," complains another senior S&P man. "Let's hope we are all wealthy and retired by the time this house of card[s] falters," ruminates one more. ........ It's not a stretch to say the whole financial industry revolves around the compass point of the absolutely safe AAA rating. But the financial crisis happened because AAA ratings stopped being something that had to be earned and turned into something that could be paid for. That this happened is even more amazing because these companies naturally have powerful leverage over their clients, as they are part of a quasi-protected industry that enjoys massive de facto state subsidies. Largely that's because government agencies like the Securities and Exchange Commission often force private companies to fulfill regulatory requirements by retaining or keeping in reserve certain fixed quantities of assets – bonds, securities, whatever – that have been rated highly by a "Nationally Recognized" ratings agency, like the "Big Three" of Moody's, S&P and Fitch. So while they're not quite part of the official regulatory infrastructure, they might as well be. ........ Thanks to these documents, we now know how that happened. And showing as they do the back-and-forth between the country's top ratings agencies and one of America's biggest investment banks (Morgan Stanley) in advance of two major subprime deals, they also lay out in detail the evolution of the industrywide fraud that led to implosion of the world economy – how banks, hedge funds, mortgage lenders and ratings agencies, working at an extraordinary level of cooperation, teamed up to disguise and then sell near-worthless loans as AAA securities. It's the black box in the American financial airplane. ...... Read on for all the sordid deatials how they did it! Also read Taibbi's Everything Is Rigged: The Biggest Price-Fixing Scandal Ever Ewen MacAskill, Nick Davies, Nick Hopkins, Julian Borger and James Ball have this EXCLUSIVE at The Guardian GCHQ intercepted foreign politicians' communications at G20 summits Foreign politicians and officials who took part in two G20 summit meetings in London in 2009 had their computers monitored and their phone calls intercepted on the instructions of their British government hosts, according to documents seen by the Guardian. Some delegates were tricked into using internet cafes which had been set up by British intelligence agencies to read their email traffic. The revelation comes as Britain prepares to host another summit on Monday – for the G8 nations, all of whom attended the 2009 meetings which were the object of the systematic spying. It is likely to lead to some tension among visiting delegates who will want the prime minister to explain whether they were targets in 2009 and whether the exercise is to be repeated this week. The disclosure raises new questions about the boundaries of surveillance by GCHQ and its American sister organisation, the National Security Agency, whose access to phone records and internet data has been defended as necessary in the fight against terrorism and serious crime. The G20 spying appears to have been organised for the more mundane purpose of securing an advantage in meetings. Named targets include long-standing allies such as South Africa and Turkey. ...... They reveal that during G20 meetings in April and September 2009 GCHQ used what one document calls "ground-breaking intelligence capabilities" to intercept the communications of visiting delegations. This included:
  • Setting up internet cafes where they used an email interception programme and key-logging software to spy on delegates' use of computers;
  • Penetrating the security on delegates' BlackBerrys to monitor their email messages and phone calls;
  • Supplying 45 analysts with a live round-the-clock summary of who was phoning who at the summit;
  • Targeting the Turkish finance minister and possibly 15 others in his party;
  • Receiving reports from an NSA attempt to eavesdrop on the Russian leader, Dmitry Medvedev, as his phone calls passed through satellite links to Moscow.
The documents suggest that the operation was sanctioned in principle at a senior level in the government of the then prime minister, Gordon Brown, and that intelligence, including briefings for visiting delegates, was passed to British ministers. ......
Then also at the Guardian UK Josh Halliday reports MoD serves news outlets with D notice over surveillance leaks BBC and other media groups issued with D notice to limit publication of information that could 'jeopardize national security' ..... Defence officials issued a confidential D notice to the BBC and other media groups in an attempt to censor coverage of surveillance tactics employed by intelligence agencies in the UK and US. Editors were asked not to publish information that may "jeopardise both national security and possibly UK personnel" in the warning issued on 7 June, a day after the Guardian first revealed details of the National Security Agency's (NSA) secret Prism programme. The D notice, which was marked "private and confidential: not for publication, broadcast or use on social media", was made public on the Westminster gossip blog, Guido Fawkes. Although only advisory for editors, the self-censorship system is intended to prevent the media from making "inadvertent public disclosure of information that would compromise UK military and intelligence operations and methods". The warning was issued by defence officials in the UK as the BBC, ITN, Sky News and other newspapers and broadcasters around the world covered the surveillance revelations disclosed by the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The leaks, reported extensively in the Guardian and also the Washington Post, have made headlines on both sides of the Atlantic for more than a week. However, it is not clear what impact the warning has had on media coverage of Snowden's revelations relating to British intelligence. William Hague, the foreign secretary, who is reponsible for GCHQ, was not asked when he appeared on Monday's BBC Radio 4 Today programme about reports that the spy agency was involved in monitoring communications made by foreign delegates at the G20 summit in London 2009. Instead the subject was discussed in an item aired towards the end of the programme at 8.45am. ...... Reaction came quickly to these revelations. The guardian's Conal Urquhart explains GCHQ monitoring described as a 'catastrophe' by German politicians ..... Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, the German justice minister said the report in the Guardian read like the plot of a film. "If these accusations are correct, this would be a catastrophe," Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said in a statement to Reuters. "The accusations against Great Britain sound like a Hollywood nightmare. The European institutions should seek straight away to clarify the situation." Britain's Tempora project enables it to intercept and store immense volumes of British and international communications for 30 days. With a few months to go before federal elections, the minister's comments are likely to please Germans who are highly sensitive to government monitoring, having lived through the Stasi secret police in communist East Germany and with lingering memories of the Gestapo under the Nazis. "The accusations make it sound as if George Orwell's surveillance society has become reality in Great Britain," said Thomas Oppermann, floor leader of the opposition Social Democrats. Orwell's novel 1984 envisioned a futuristic security state where "Big Brother" spied on the intimate details of people's lives. "This is unbearable," Oppermann told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. "The government must clarify these accusations and act against a total surveillance of German citizens." MORE CONGRESSMAN WITH GUTS: WashingtonsBlog posts First Congress Member Allowed to Read Secret Treaty Says “There Is No National Security Purpose In Keeping This Text Secret … This Agreement Hands The Sovereignty of Our Country Over to Corporate Interests” ..... Congressman Alan Grayson (who knows how to read legislation … he was a successful lawyer before he was elected to Congress, and has written and co-sponsored numerous bills himself including the bill to audit the Federal Reserve and – most recently – the “Mind Your Own Business Act” to stop NSA spying) announced that he had been allowed to read the text of TPP – and that it is an anti-American power grab by big corporations:
    .....The TPP is nicknamed “NAFTA on steroids.” Now that I’ve read it, I can see why. I can’t tell you what’s in the agreement, because the U.S. Trade Representative calls it classified. But I can tell you two things about it.
    1) There is no national security purpose in keeping this text secret.
    2) This agreement hands the sovereignty of our country over to corporate interests.
    3) What they can’t afford to tell the American public is that [the rest of this sentence is classified].
    I will be fighting this agreement with everything I’ve got. And I know you’ll be there every step of the way. -Courage, Congressman Alan Grayson
...... Remember that one of the best definitions of fascism – the one used by Mussolini – is the “merger of state and corporate power”. Our nation has been moving in that direction for a number of years, where government and giant corporations are becoming more and more intertwined in a malignant, symbiotic relationship. TPP would be the nail in the coffin for free market economics and democracy.

Learn more about the Green Shadow Cabinet atGreenShadowCabinet.us Also at The Guardian Glenn Greenwald and James Ball post Revealed: the top secret rules that allow NSA to use US data without a warrant The Guardian is publishing in full two documents submitted to the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (known as the Fisa court), signed by Attorney General Eric Holder and stamped 29 July 2009. They detail the procedures the NSA is required to follow to target "non-US persons" under its foreign intelligence powers and what the agency does to minimize data collected on US citizens and residents in the course of that surveillance. The documents show that even under authorities governing the collection of foreign intelligence from foreign targets, US communications can still be collected, retained and used. ..... However, alongside those provisions, the Fisa court-approved policies allow the NSA to:
• Keep data that could potentially contain details of US persons for up to five years;
• Retain and make use of "inadvertently acquired" domestic communications if they contain usable intelligence, information on criminal activity, threat of harm to people or property, are encrypted, or are believed to contain any information relevant to cybersecurity;
• Preserve "foreign intelligence information" contained within attorney-client communications;
• Access the content of communications gathered from "U.S. based machine[s]" or phone numbers in order to establish if targets are located in the US, for the purposes of ceasing further surveillance.
The broad scope of the court orders, and the nature of the procedures set out in the documents, appear to clash with assurances from President Obama and senior intelligence officials that the NSA could not access Americans' call or email information without warrants. ...... Since the Guardian first revealed the extent of the NSA's collection of US communications, there have been repeated calls for the legal basis of the programs to be released. On Thursday, two US congressmen introduced a bill compelling the Obama administration to declassify the secret legal justifications for NSA surveillance. The disclosure bill, sponsored by Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, and Todd Rokita, an Indiana Republican, is a complement to one proposed in the Senate last week. It would "increase the transparency of the Fisa Court and the state of the law in this area," Schiff told the Guardian. "It would give the public a better understanding of the safeguards, as well as the scope of these programs." ......

MORE GREENWALD! Fisa court oversight: a look inside a secret and empty process Obama and other NSA defenders insist there are robust limitations on surveillance but the documents show otherwise... David Kravets at Wired covering the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings Wednesday reports FBI Admits It Surveils U.S. With Drones FBI Director Robert Mueller said today the bureau was surveilling the United States with drones. The revelation was during an FBI oversight hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee and comes as the bureau, along with the National Security Agency, are on the defensive about revelations that they are obtaining metadata on Americans’ phone records and Americans’ private data from companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others. The FBI is not alone in monitoring the U.S. with drones. ....... “Our footprint is very small. We have very few,” Mueller said in response to an inquiry on unmanned aircraft by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). Grassley asked: “Does the FBI own or currently use drones and for what purposes?” “Yes, for surveillance.” Grassley continued: “Does the FBI use drones for surveillance on U.S. soil?” “Yes, in a very, very minimal way, and seldom.” Moments later, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) said drones were a huge privacy threat to Americans. The director was unprepared to answer Feinstein’s questions on what “privacy strictures” are in place to protect Americans’ privacy in connection to FBI drone use. ..... YOIKES! Andrew Osborn at Reuters London writes WikiLeaks' Assange fears U.S., says will stay in embassy (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says he will not leave the sanctuary of the Ecuadorean Embassy in London even if Sweden stops pursuing sexual assault claims against him because he fears arrest on the order of the United States. In an interview with Reuters and others to mark the first anniversary of taking refuge in the cramped diplomatic building, Assange said he remained hopeful he might be able to leave but offered little evidence to suggest he would be finding new living quarters anytime soon. "I wouldn't say I wouldn't leave," he said. "(But) my lawyers have advised me I shouldn't leave the embassy because of the risk of arrest in relation to the risk of arrest and extradition to the United States." When asked whether he would remain inside even if Sweden dropped the investigation against him, Assange said: "That's correct." Assange chose his words carefully in the interview, which was conducted last Friday under embargo. ..... Assange said he initially thought he might be holed up in the embassy, a diplomatic facility in one of London's swishiest areas, for up to two years. His original timetable was still a fair estimate, he told his interviewers. When asked whether he was worried the situation could drag on much longer, he conceded it was a possibility. "Left to its own devices that is a risk, left to fate that is a risk," he said. "There have been other cases, similar deadlocks for political refugees in embassies, that have gone on for dozens of years. However, we don't intend to leave the situation to fate." ...... SNOWDEN UPDATE: In a fast-moving story we add these items from The Guardian UK: Here is the statement from wiklileaks Statement by Julian Assange after One Year in Ecuadorian Embassy which reads in part .... The word "traitor" has been thrown around a lot in recent days. But who is really the traitor here? Who was it who promised a generation "hope" and "change," only to betray those promises with dismal misery and stagnation? Who took an oath to defend the US constitution, only to feed the invisible beast of secret law devouring it alive from the inside out? Who is it that promised to preside over The Most Transparent Administration in history, only to crush whistleblower after whistleblower with the bootheel of espionage charges? Who combined in his executive the powers of judge, jury and executioner, and claimed the jurisdiction of the entire earth on which to exercise those powers? Who arrogates the power to spy on the entire earth - every single one of us - and when he is caught red handed, explains to us that "we’re going to have to make a choice." Who is that person? Let’s be very careful about who we call "traitor". ......... The only way to fix things is this:
Change the policies.
Stop spying on the world.
Eradicate secret law.
Cease indefinite detention without trial.
Stop assassinating people.
Stop invading other countries and sending young Americans off to kill and be killed.
Stop the occupations, and discontinue the secret wars.
Stop eating the young: Edward Snowden, Barrett Brown, Jeremy Hammond, Aaron Swartz, Gottfrid Svartholm, Jacob Appelbaum, and Bradley Manning.
The charging of Edward Snowden is intended to intimidate any country that might be considering standing up for his rights. That tactic must not be allowed to work. The effort to find asylum for Edward Snowden must be intensified. What brave country will stand up for him, and recognize his service to humanity? Tell your governments to step forward. Step forward and stand with Snowden.

And one of the largest problems with fracking is that the companies doing the drilling are operating with almost no oversight and no regulations. But as members of Congress attempt to correct that, energy companies are rushing to make sure that they continue to escape the grasp of regulators by funneling money into campaign coffers, and by enlisting the help of a very powerful ally — The US Chamber of Commerce. Mike Papantonio discussed all of this with Tyson Slocum, the director of Public Citizen’s energy program.

    Silver Makes Antibiotics Thousands of Times More Effective by Stacy Herbert - Stacy Summary: Only physical will work, however. Paper and SLV won’t do. Like werewolves and vampires, bacteria have a weakness: silver. The precious metal has been used to fight infection for thousands of years — Hippocrates first described its antimicrobial properties in 400 bc — but how it works has been a mystery. Now, a team led by James Collins, a biomedical engineer at Boston University in Massachusetts, has described how silver can disrupt bacteria, and shown that the ancient treatment could help to deal with the thoroughly modern scourge of antibiotic resistance. • KEISER REPORT [KR459] Keiser Report: Life in Open Air PRISM We report from Belfast on location at the G8 and anti-G8 meetings. They juxtapose the protests in China where thousands wait in line to buy gold to protect against G8-style inflationary policies to the less effective protests in Belfast where placards are waved in ‘free speech zones;’ while, in Westminster, secret proposals are drafted by Rothschilds to retroactively raise interest rates on $40 billion in outstanding student loan debts. The plan is suggested in order to make the debt more attractive to private investors. In the second half, Max talks to independent journalist, Luke Rudkowski, about fake shopfronts in Belfast meant to disguise the true state of the economy and about the few protesters demanding communism and socialism when that’s part of the reason our financial and economic systems have collapsed.
    • KEISER REPORT [KR460] Keiser Report: Size, Scale & Speed of Debt We discuss the recent visitation to the Keiser Report from a UFO with aliens on board wishing not to speak to Doughball Dave Cameron, but to discuss their concerns about the Giant Debt Ball of China which can be seen from outer space. They take an in depth look at the size, scale and speed of debt in China and at the JP Morgan Debit Card Work Farm for employees at McDonald’s in Pennsylvannia. In the second half, Max talks to Dr. Steve Keen, author of Debunking Economics, about George Osborne’s ponzi-like Help to Buy scheme being similar to failed government housing schemes in Australia in which Help to Sell is the true objective of the subsidies.
    • KEISER REPORT [KR461] Keiser Report: Global Financial Holocaust We discuss pepper spraying protesters while contemplating possibly, maybe one day out in the far distant future charging banksters for ‘reckless misconduct’ – aka destroying the global financial, monetary and economic systems. In the second half, Max talks to the author of a new book, Transforming Economy: From Corrupted Capitalism to Connected Communities, Zeus Yiamouyiannis of citizenzeus.com about an Academy Award for best horror fraud going to Fraudclosure; the use of kitty litter collateral to back the global financial system and ending your contribution to the phoney economy.
