ALL LINKS OPEN A NEW WINDOW!!!

SOTU STFU WTF? The best tweet of the State of the Union Speech last Tuesday evening came from @theUSpresident (h/t dormaphaea - "probably not teh awesome one, but a fabulous parody") "The theme of tonight's State of the Union address is "Winning the Future," or WTF." wtf indeed! BAR executive editor Glen Ford was less enthusiastic. The Obama/GOP Consensus"In announcing a five-year freeze on domestic spending, Obama enters a new phase of aggressive – rather than furtive – collaboration with the GOP. To ensure that catastrophe cannot be avoided for the tens of millions battered and set adrift by the two (lesser and greater) recessions of the 21st century, Obama will join with Republicans to prevent the domestic arms of government from coming to the people’s aid, by freezing finances. With whole communities in a state of economic dislocation, Obama burns the rescue boats and poisons the water, all the while promising that the necessary budgetary savings will not be achieved “on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens” – as if Wall Street’s bankers will shield the helpless with their well-bonused bodies." Some of those "well-bonused bodies" are in Davos Switzerland for the Annual World Economic Forum. At ZeroHedge Dow 12,000 Welcomes Top 0.1% to Davos! we find out from Phil of Phil's Stock World "The minimum price for admission to the conference is $50,000 for a membership to the World Economic Forum plus a $20,000 ticket to the conference so $70,000 before trying to get a hotel room at a place you won't be embarrassed to mention to the other guests. Getting to Davos is also a nightmare at the best of times but worth it for the skiing, if not the schmoozing. In short, it's group of people who have at least $80,000 to blow on a weekend sitting around discussing the problems ordinary folks like themselves face in the ever-changing global economy. ... " It's not clear yet if any of these "well-bonused bodies" will be held accountable by the recent Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission's report. Richard (RJ) Eskow of OurFuture.org offers Breaking the Silence: FCIC Report Brings The Focus Back To Wall StreetThe Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission's report couldn't come at a better time. At a moment when it seems that Washington would rather forget what happened two years ago, it documents the opportunism, bad judgment, and criminality that crashed the world's economy once - and could again at any time. An interconnected web of Wall Street criminality, discredited ideology, and politicians chasing big money - along with a surprising amount of executive incompetence - has caused continued suffering for millions. At a time when the nation's capital is convinced that CEOs need appeasing rather than policing, the FCIC report is a badly needed return to reality. ... As the New York Times reported, the FCIC report will conclude that "the 2008 financial crisis was an 'avoidable' disaster caused by widespread failures in government regulation, corporate mismanagement and heedless risk-taking by Wall Street." It will document banker misdeeds that range from irresponsibility and mismanagement to corruption and criminality. It's been reported that the Commission will also refer a number of cases to the authorities for possible prosecution. From that NYT item Though the report documents questionable practices by mortgage lenders and careless betting by banks, one striking finding is its portrayal of incompetence. It quotes Citigroup executives conceding that they paid little attention to mortgage-related risks. Executives at the American International Group were found to have been blind to its $79 billion exposure to credit-default swaps, a kind of insurance that was sold to investors seeking protection against a drop in the value of securities backed by home loans. At Merrill Lynch, managers were surprised when seemingly secure mortgage investments suddenly suffered huge losses. By one measure, for about every $40 in assets, the nation’s five largest investment banks had only $1 in capital to cover losses, meaning that a 3 percent drop in asset values could have wiped out the firm. The banks hid their excessive leverage using derivatives, off-balance-sheet entities and other devices, the report found. The speculative binge was abetted by a giant “shadow banking system” in which the banks relied heavily on short-term debt. Tyler Durden at zerohedge has The Charts From The FCIC Report while George Washington notes While the Financial Crisis Commission Report Looks Impressive At First Glance, It Doesn't Hit Hard Enough ... and Won't Lead to Any Real Change. Meanwhile Egypt in in its sixth day of protests. Timothy Karr of FreePress and SavetheInternet.com discovers One U.S. Corporation's Role in Egypt's Brutal Crackdown at HuffPo: The open Internet's role in popular uprising is now undisputed. Look no further than Egypt, where the Mubarak regime today reportedly shut down Internet and cell phone communications -- a troubling predictor of the fierce crackdown that has followed. What's even more troubling is news that one American company is aiding Egypt's harsh response through sales of technology that makes this repression possible. ... Telecom Egypt, the nation's dominant phone and Internet service provider, is a state-run enterprise, which made it easy on Friday morning for authorities to pull the plug and plunge much of the nation into digital darkness. Moreover, Egypt also has the ability to spy on Internet and cell phone users, by opening their communication packets and reading their contents. Iran used similar methods during the 2009 unrest to track, imprison and in some cases, "disappear" truckloads of cyber-dissidents. The companies that profit from sales of this technology need to be held to a higher standard. One in particular is an American firm, Narus of Sunnyvale, Calif., which has sold Telecom Egypt "real-time traffic intelligence" equipment. Narus, now owned by Boeing, was founded in 1997 by Israeli security experts to create and sell mass surveillance systems for governments and large corporate clients.... For the latest coverage on happenings in Egypt go to AJE - Al Jazeera English Cue Gomer Pyle "Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!" RAW STORY US secretly backed Egyptian protest leaders: One of the young Egyptian leaders who attended a summit for activists in New York with the help of the US embassy in Cairo was detained when he returned to Egypt, the memo released by Wikileaks said. The Daily Telegraph reported Friday that it and the secrets outlet were both hiding the identity of this young Egyptian leader. He was arrested in connection with this week's demonstrations. The leaked document indicates that the US government was publicly supporting Mubarak's government while privately backing opposition groups. And add JORDAN to the list of countries with people out in the streets. Pro-reforms protest reaches Jordan, puts king under pressure Thousands of Jordanian opposition supporters have taken the streets in the country's capital demanding the prime minister step down and venting their anger at rising prices, inflation and unemployment. Many protesters shouted: "Rifai go away, prices are on fire and so are the Jordanians." (-AP, Jan 29, 2011 via Times of India). Also check Ten Things to Know About U.S. Policy in the Middle East by Stephen Zunes from 2001. Shocking! Be sure to listen to Bob Kincaid's Friday show (link below) for a great lesson on Egypt through history, which puts the peoples' actions there in context. Excellent! Also read this long piece by William Greider at the Nation The End of New Deal Liberalism Political events of the past two years have delivered a more profound and devastating message: American democracy has been conclusively conquered by American capitalism. Government has been disabled or captured by the formidable powers of private enterprise and concentrated wealth. Your Sunday Talkies will be all over the "Crisis in Egypt" headline as SoS HILLARY CLINTON gets the WH Limo to This Anampour, Face the Bob, Fake Snooze and State of the Candy which also features JOHN "Crazy Train" MCCAIN and CHUCK "They frankly own the place" SCHUMER. Meet the David engages in navel-gazing with TOM "Flat Earth" FRIEDMAN and other Beltway Bubalas. Don't miss 60 Minutes interview with JULLIAN ASSANGE - a Double Length Segment! See WikiLeaks: Why It Matters. Why It Doesn't? with Daniel Ellsberg, Former State and Defense Dept. Meanwhile the Cavs are now on a 19-game losing streak with no end in sight but the #1 OSU Buckeyes are on a 22-game winning streak and the Cleveland State Vikings are 20-3! The Other Scott Horton January 22, 2011: The Other Scott Horton (no relation), international human rights lawyer, professor and contributing editor at Harper’s magazine, discusses the one year anniversary of Obama’s broken promise to close Guantanamo; the politicization of terrorism prosecutions, normally the purview of professional prosecutors and not Congress; authorization in the Army Field Manual Appendix M for subjecting prisoners to long-term sensory deprivation; recent court rulings that grant high government officials immunity from prosecution, even for torture, much to the relief of Donald Rumsfeld; how the Gulet Mohamed case casts doubt on the end of “torture by proxy” under Obama; and why the AUMF catchall justification is applicable in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border region but not in Yemen or Somalia.

ALL LINKS OPEN A NEW WINDOW!!!

In the SLOW lane? We open with Josh Silver @ Save the Internet on the NBC/Comcast merger Comcastrophe You should be afraid and mad as hell. The new Comcast will control an obscene number of media outlets, including the NBC broadcast network, numerous cable channels, two dozen local NBC and Telemundo stations, movie studios, online video portals, and the physical network that distributes that media content to millions of Americans through Internet and cable connections. Why should you care about a business deal between a couple of companies? This merger will touch all corners of the media market, and you won't be immune. Comcast will jack up the prices that other cable and online distributers pay for NBC content, and those prices will be passed to you. That means higher cable and Internet bills, even if you don't subscribe to Comcast. ... While pushing through this deal, the FCC chair completely ignored the lack of competition in the Internet service provider market. ... And it will only be a matter of time before more companies follow Comcast's lead and start pursuing new mergers. The FCC's blessing of Comcast and NBC will embolden companies like AT&T or Verizon, to try to gobble up content providers such as Disney and CBS, creating a new era of media consolidation where even fewer companies control the content you watch and all the ways you want to watch it.

Obama On Net Neutrality "I'm a big believer in Net Neutrality. I campaigned on this. I continue to be a strong supporter of it. My FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has indicated that he shares the view that we've got to keep the Internet open, that we don't want to create a bunch of gateways that prevent somebody who doesn't have a lot of money but has a good idea from being able to start their next YouTube or their next Google on the Internet… This is something we're committed to. We're getting pushback, obviously, from some of the bigger carriers who would like to be able to charge more fees and extract more money from wealthier customers. But we think that runs counter to the whole spirit of openness that has made the Internet such a powerful engine for not only economic growth, but also for the generation of ideas and creativity." President Obama Youtube interview February 01, 2010
And we can all THANK pResident Big Dawg for passing the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which brought us the likes of Clear Channel Communications (CCC) going from 43 radio & 16 teevee stations in 1994 to over one thousand stations, billboards and Live Nation (yes that same Live Nation that just merged with TicketMaster ... more stories HERE). Then On November 16, 2006, Clear Channel announced plans to go private, being bought out by two private-equity firms, Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital Partners for $18.7 billion, which is just under a 10 percent premium above its closing price of $35.36 a share on November 16 (the deal values Clear Channel at $37.60 per share).[6][7] The new ownership of Clear Channel has also announced that all of its TV stations were for sale, as well as 448 radio stations that were outside of the top 100 markets.[8] All of the TV stations and 161 of the radio stations were sold to Providence Equity Partners, a private-equity firm, on April 23, 2007, pending FCC approval.[9] (wiki). Some of you might recognize BAIN CAPITAL as MITT "Max Headroom" ROMNEY's old digs, eh? BAIN was successful in that CCC filed for bankruptcy in early 2010, as reported by Reuters Clear Channel restructuring 'inevitable'-Moody's: The company will still face a critical hurdle in 2016, when about $13.8 billion of debt comes due, and leverage is expected to remain too high to attract more investment and refinance the debt, Moody's said. "It is clear under our assumptions for operating improvement and valuation multiples that the company's debt levels are unmanageable and unrefinancable," the rating agency said. A spokesman for Bain Capital declined comment. ... Even though it will likely begin to generate modest free cash flow in 2013, it is not expected to be able to refinance about $3.7 billion of debt due in 2014 with cash on hand, Moody's said. Too bad about CCC. But what about all the people who worked at all those stations? Many of the "448 radio stations that were outside of the top 100 markets", mostly low-power AM stations, that were sold per the BAIN private-equity model got gobbled up by religious "organizations" or now broadcast (surprise!) Fox Sports Radio. But we digress. Did you hear Keith Olbermann, the controversial MSNBC cable news host, has his contract abruptly terminated by parent company NBC
Bizarrely, nearly half an hour later during an ad break in the following programme, MSNBC showed a station promo featuring Olbermann. But the promo was interrupted halfway through by a mattress advertisment.
DOPEaddict comments Comcast has scored its first bullseye. Eliminating KO is only the first shot in its project of homogenization of NBC's news dept. Now every network & cable news channell will only repeat the company (White House) line -- "all praise neoliberalism & austerity!" No dissent will be allowed. And while KO's liberal, he's hardly what anyone (except the famously ignorant American audience) would call "left." Any & all dissenting voices will soon be silenced, as the empire goes out with a whimper, not a bang. You can vent at DU's Joanne98 post FUCK COMCAST. Meanwhile William Daley, President Barack Obama’s new chief of staff, filed a notice with the Securities and Exchange Commission today to sell 186,190 shares of JPMorgan Chase & Co. that he valued at almost $8.3 million. Then seeSeymour Hersh telling like it is. GO WATCH Churchill Club presents: WikiLeaks: Why It Matters. Why It Doesn't? We're out of time! The Brick TeeVee crew sez "Good Night and Good Luck" to KO as the corporomedia lurches rightward evermore.

Patrick Cockburn January 16, 2011: This interview is from the KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles broadcast on January 14th. The original program is HERE. Patrick Cockburn, Middle East correspondent for The Independent, discusses how Muqtada al-Sadr’s return to Iraq has changed the political landscape and made a full US withdrawal by year’s end more likely; how otherwise-nationalist Iraqis use foreign allies as leverage against domestic sectarian/religious rivals; why the Pentagon seems to have drunk its own surge narrative Kool-Aid (in expecting the Iraq occupation to continue indefinitely); why the April Glaspie memo can’t be construed as a green light for invasion, because nobody expected Saddam Hussein to do it; how George H.W. Bush’s failure to support the 1991 Shiite uprising showed a US preference for an enduring, but weakened, Hussein led government, and an understanding that a Shia win would benefit Iran; how plain “stupidity” explains George W. Bush’s policy shift to depose Hussein and occupy the country; and how Iraq’s crippling problems are reflected by the millions of refugees who still refuse to return home. LISTEN HERE (mp3) 28:51
Gareth Porter January 19, 2011: Gareth Porter, independent historian and journalist for IPS News, discusses Ike Eisenhower’s extraordinary (but too little too late) farewell address; how the overblown Soviet threat and missile gap hoax scared Americans enough to boost the bottom line of defense contractors; how the unlimited supply of government money corrupts otherwise solid businesses that are forced to compete with insiders and cheats; how the perquisites of government/military employment, though relatively harmless in isolation, drive the entire “permanent war state;” revelations that the British mission in Afghanistan was simply to “give the Army something to do;” and the three choices for fighting back against state militarism: abolish government, protest for change, or expatriate. LISTEN HERE (mp3) 33:06
Greg Mitchell January 19, 2011: Greg Mitchell, author of the Media Fix blog for TheNation.com, discusses why all those people claiming WikiLeaks never released anything noteworthy, need to actually read the cables, or at least follow Greg on Twitter or at TheNation.com, where he has 53 consecutive days of noteworthy WikiLeaks updates; how the mainstream media’s disinterest in WikiLeaks is compensated for by region-specific media outlets reporting on significant local events (the revelations of Tunisia’s government corruption, for example); and the “cherry-picking” style of journalism, for good or evil. LISTEN HERE (mp3) 19:57
Nick Baumann January 19, 2011: Nick Baumann, assistant editor at Mother Jones, discusses the favorable court proceedings on behalf of Gulet Mohamed, a teenage US citizen detained and mistreated in Kuwait for a month, that may have him headed home soon; the clear Constitutional and legal precedents that prevents the government from banishing a US citizen (in Mohamed’s case, by placing him on the no-fly list, knowing Kuwaiti law demands deportation by a direct flight); FBI interrogators who won’t take “no” for an answer, and who lie about not being bound by US law while in other countries; the proxy detentions of Muslim American citizens, similar to the extraordinary renditions during the Bush administration; and Anwar al-Awlaki’s sentence in absentia in Yemen on a strange incitement to murder charge unrelated to terrorism. LISTEN HERE (mp3) 19:17
Philip Weiss January 20, 2011: Philip Weiss, investigative journalist and author of the blog MondoWeiss, discusses the mounting pressure on the US to refrain from vetoing a UN resolution critical of Israel’s illegal settlements (even J Street is on board); the glaring omission of George Mitchell from Obama’s new Mideast task force, which is full of establishment hacks and pro-Israel pundits; the continuing pretense that equal concessions must be made in a two-state solution, ignoring the reality of occupation and the vastly unequal parties involved; evidence that the US has lost all credibility as an “honest broker” as a rash of countries independently recognize the Palestinian state; how Noam Chomsky underestimates (or understates) the influence of the Israel lobby; and why a one-state solution is the only reasonable settlement, even though the subject remains verboten in polite society. ALL LINKS OPEN A NEW WINDOW!!!

AZ Shooting Blowback Last Saturday's attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords at a shopping mall in Tuscon has unleashed a barrage of finger-pointing and accusations from both "The Left" and "The Right" that the shooter was a Republican or a Democrat (he's a registered Independent), that both are at fault. What's NEVER mentioned is the conservatives' virtual blanket of the public airwaves compared to liberal/progressive talk and comment. A report released in 2007 by the Center for American Progress The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio notes, "Our analysis in the spring of 2007 of the 257 news/talk stations owned by the top five commercial station owners reveals that 91 percent of the total weekday talk radio programming is conservative, and 9 percent is progressive. Each weekday, 2,570 hours and 15 minutes of conservative talk are broadcast on these stations compared to 254 hours of progressive talk—10 times as much conservative talk as progressive talk." Since 2007 many prog/lib stations have gone dark or switched to religion or sports talk if not directly to conservative talk so the ratio today may be more than the 10:1 the report found. Take your own informal poll by scanning your local AM radio dial and see what's on your local terrestrial stations. Eric Boehlert of MediaMatters.org spells out The Right's Rising Tide of Violent Rhetoric: It’s a wave of violence that’s cresting along with a tide of hateful, insurrectionist rhetoric that far too many conservatives refuse to condemn. Instead, the toxic talk is routinely defended as being nothing more than spirited debate. It’s not. It’s deadly. And until those in positions of power say so, the dangerous rhetoric is likely to continue. ... What’s undeniable is that the attempted assassination of Giffords took place against a right-wing media backdrop that has been targeting the government, and specifically Democrats, in an unconscionable manner: More at MediaMatters.com. And it seems the conservatives want even less "liberal" talk like the "evil" National Public Radio. The GOP is also trying to defund NPR & PBS as John Eggerton @ Multichannel News reports in Republicans Take Fresh Aim At Noncoms: Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) has...actually re-introduced two new bills, H.R. 68, that would cut all federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) starting in 2013 (noncoms are funded several years in advance in an effort to insulate them from political pressures). H.R. 69 is targeted to NPR, only ending funding for the radio service, also starting in 2013. "Congress is playing politics with a public trust that hundreds of millions of Americans rely on for news, arts and entertainment, and for educational programming for our kids," said Craig Aaron, Free Press Action Fund managing director. "It's disgraceful that leaders of the ‘people's House' routinely threaten the nation's most trusted and respected sources of news just to score a few partisan points." Now that Republicans control the U.S. House of Representatives, they will chair most if not all of the House committees. First order of BIZNESS? Darrell Issa Asks Businesses Which Regulations Should be Killed @ CBS Hot Sheet: Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, who will lead the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, sent a letter to more than 150 companies and other organizations asking them to identify regulations that they would like to see eliminated. ... "This really says it all about whose interests the GOP is really out to protect - and it's not middle class families," added the Democratic National Committee. As we've heard over and over this past week, Words DO Matter. So how do the Republicans respond? Nadia Prupis @ t r u t h o u t explains how House Republicans Remove "Civil Rights" and "Labor" From Committee Names: House Republicans have renamed several Congressional committees by changing or removing certain hot-button words such as "civil rights" and "labor" from their titles. The Education and Labor Committee became the Education and Workforce Committee, while the Subcommittee on Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties is set to be renamed the Constitution Subcommittee....Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-New York), chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties since 2007, also spoke out against Republicans' plans to rename the panel and remove the words "civil rights" and "civil liberties." "Once again, the new Republican majority has shown that it isn't quite as committed to the Constitution as its recent lofty rhetoric would indicate. It has yet again shown its contempt for key portions of the document – the areas of civil rights and civil liberties - by banishing those words from the title of the Constitution Subcommittee." Yep words like "civil rights" and "civil liberties" DO MATTER but apparently not to Republicans who historically have opposed both types of legislation. Elsewhere Raw Story reports WikiLeaks has ‘insurance files’ on News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch, Assange claims WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said in a recent interview that he is holding back "insurance files" which could embarrass Rupert Murdoch and his international media empire at News Corporation. The secrets website was also holding of over 500 US State Department cables about one broadcasting organization in particular, he added. Assange made the disclosure while speaking to New Statesman, saying the files "will be released" if something happens to him or his organization. "There are 504 US embassy cables on one broadcasting organisation and there are cables on Murdoch and News Corp.," he said. The files "speak more of the same truth to power," he added. The government's National Commission on BP Deepwater Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling released its Final Report and a h/t to nora who notes Gulf of Mexico--Oil & Corexit PERSIST: BP and Obama deny this, but lab tests prove the pollution is there-- The Tragic State of the Gulf of Mexico: Sampling Reveals Oil and Dispersants on Mississippi Coast by Dahr Jamail and Erika Blumenfeld of t r u t h o u t: Lab tests have confirmed oil and chemicals from the dispersants in the samples tested, which contradicts ongoing statements from both BP and the Obama administration that the Gulf of Mexico is safe from the effects of the BP oil disaster. Surprised? THIS JUST IN: U.S. Bills States $1.3 Billion in Interest Amid Tight Budgets @ nyt (h/t ljm) As if states did not have enough on their plates getting their shaky finances in order, a new bill is coming due — from the federal government, which will charge them $1.3 billion in interest this fall on the billions they have borrowed from Washington to pay unemployment benefits during the downturn. ... The problem is not only the staggering number of people who have lost their jobs, but the fact that many states entered the downturn with too little money salted away in the trust funds they use to pay unemployment benefits, which they are supposed to build up in good times by taxing employers. AND Helen Brown The Fed Has Spoken: No Bailout for Main Street @HuffPo (h/t msgeaux) The Federal Reserve was set up by bankers for bankers, and it has served them well. Out of the blue, it came up with $12.3 trillion in nearly interest-free credit to bail the banks out of a credit crunch they created. That same credit crisis has plunged state and local governments into insolvency, but the Fed has now delivered its ultimatum: there will be no "quantitative easing" for municipal governments. ... If the Fed could so easily come up with 12.3 trillion dollars to save the banks, why can't it find a few hundred billion under the mattress to save the states? Obviously it could, if Congress were inclined to put non-bank lending back into the Fed's job description. Then why isn't that being done? The cynical view is that the states are purposely being kept on the edge of bankruptcy, because the banks that hold Congress hostage want the interest income and the control. Whatever the reason, Congress is standing down while the nation is sinking. Of course the Sunday Talkies will be about the fall-out from the Tuscon shooting spree, with This Anampour holding her own Town Hall live from Tuscon. Face the Bob has PA Guv ED RENDELL, RUDY "Mr. Nine-Eleven" GHOULIANI, KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND and Rep Gifford's good friend DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ also on Meet the David with CHUCK SCHUMER and TOM COBURN. State of the Candy has various mental health experts while 60 Minutes put together DESCENT INTO MADNESS to "reconstruct the pathway to mass murder". Democracy Now has plenty more coverage from the past week as does GRITtv and Ring of Fire Radio. Make sure you catch Peter B. with Harvey Wasserman and Prof Scott Bonn on the "Moral Panic" the U.S. media used in the run-up to the Iraq War. Scott Horton has some excellent interviews with Coleen Rowley, Nick Turse, Tom Engelhardt and Danny Schechter of the News Dissector and don't miss Max Keiser's interview with CATHERINE AUSTIN FITTS. You may want to keep your eye on the fast-developing story in TUNISIA and the incredible flooding in Brazil, Australia and elsewhere worldwide. The Brick TeeVee Crew is now left with the No Fun League Playoffs and a Kingless and hurt Cavs (8-31). But The Daytona 500 is February 20th PLUS it's only 30 days 'til pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training! MLB Opening Day is not far away! Stay warm and have a great week! Here's House's firedoglake article: Bradley Manning Speaks About His Conditions Here's the Colmes' show with the interview of House: David House of FireDogLake.com joins Alan to reveal what he learned during his visit with U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning in the Quantico brig. Also see Merged Manning-Lamo Chat Logs and Glenn Greenwald The inhumane conditions of Bradley Manning's detention & Wired's refusal to release or comment on the Manning chat logs

Meet the Facts at NPR "On the Media" - Last December, NYU professor Jay Rosen proposed something simple yet revolutionary: why don't the Sunday morning chat shows fact check their guests? • VIDEO! Attack of the Right Wing Courts There’s no question that the current makeup of the US Supreme Court leans heavily to the Right, but just how far to the right has remained a secret until now. As it turns out, the conservative members of the judiciary have been rubbing elbows with some of the creepiest and most extremist right wing groups in America. Mike Papantonio talks about how deeply embedded our Supreme Court is with right wing America, and what this means for the judiciary, with Lee Fang, a researcher and blogger for Think Progress.
    • VIDEO! The History of Right Wing Hate Talk Conservative hate talkers are not a new phenomena, and as Mike Papantonio points out on The Ed Schultz Show, hateful and violent rhetoric from the right existed back in the days of JFK, and many believe that this is what led to his assassination.
    • VIDEO! Papantonio and Ed Schultz Expose Joe Klein, the Fraud Mike Papantonio and Ed Schultz discuss the journalistic void that is Joe Klein, as well as the hate talk that helped spur last weekend’s atrocities in Arizona.

MUST READ: Eric Janszen: Part I: The Other Shoe by maxkeiser We need more growth but no one seems to know how the economy can grow any faster, without a new bubble to boost growth the way the housing bubble and war spending rescued the economy in the early 2000s. With interest rates at zero the economy lacks a tail wind of falling interest rates as it had in the early 1980s.
To all who refuse to support Wikileaks, or who fail to think through what Wikileaks is all about . . . by maxkeiser A Wikileaks revolution? Tunisia has been rocked by riots recently over unemployment and corruption, thought to have been sparked by the suicide of a young man who could not find a job and was barred from selling fruit without a permit. @ HuffPo
Catherine Austin Fitts on Gold, Silver and the ‘Crash JP Morgan’ Idea by maxkeiser MK: Since launching the CJPMBS campaign on 11/11/10 – when Silver was at $26.50 (after 5 years of promoting Gold and Silver: cost basis around $9 for Silver not for political purposes; but as protection against insanity) there have been two schools of thought on this campaign (while up 42% on an annualized rate of return at the same time Facebook was DEVALUED by 14% – pre-money valuation by GS): 1) It can work because JPM’s short position can be overcome with physical delivery (stock gets crushed) 2) It can’t work because JPM is the US government and so can simply tap into the Fed if necessary to cover any shorts. I have never understood the second response because it means the US dollar would get crushed – which is the same thing as JP Morgan crashing. In other words, you could save JP Morgan’s stock with a bailout, but the US dollar would have to be sacrificed. Again, at this stage of the deteriorating dollar – no accounting tricks are going to save the inevitable. So yea, JP Morgan’s stock can be kept at $44 or it can rise to $144 or $14,000 but it doesn’t matter since the dollar would be worthless and Silver would be at $500. We’re gonna get to $500 one way or another. Either JPM goes, or the dollar goes, or both. The Silver vigilantes like Sprott are gonna make this happen. There is very little Silver available – less than $30 bn. worth in total. If millions of people around the world want to make $500 happen faster, it’s up to them. It depends how much you like Wall St. laughing at you and stealing your money.

Danny Schechter January 08, 2011: Danny Schechter, executive editor of MediaChannel.org, discusses his new article that revisits journalist Helen Thomas’s career-ending Israel gaffe; how selective quotation from the “gotcha” clip turned Thomas’s poorly phrased response into “proof” of her anti-Semitism; the media hit pieces, gloating about Thomas’s exile, that make clear there is little tolerance in Washington for Israel-critics; and Schechter’s firsthand account – while working for ABC News in 1982 – of an Israeli campaign to stop the airing of an investigative news story about the West Bank. See Schecter's blog at NewsDissector.com LISTEN HERE (mp3) 20:03
Tom Engelhardt January 11, 2011: Tom Engelhardt, creator of Tomdispatch.com and author of The American Way of War: How Bush’s Wars Became Obama’s, discusses Tomdispatch writer Nick Turse’s updated estimate of just how many US foreign military bases exist; how the official DOD tally omits bases in Iraq, Afghanistan and most of the Persian Gulf; why, in the age of billion dollar embassies and $130 million fuel depots, the US “empire of bases” is not economically sustainable; and how your stimulus dollars are being used for building police forces (in Afghanistan). LISTEN HERE (mp3) 18:10
Nick Turse January 13, 2011: Nick Turse, author of The Complex: How the Military Invades Our Everyday Lives and editor of The Case for Withdrawal from Afghanistan, discusses his research that shows the Pentagon has over 1000 foreign bases – taking care to exclude the golf courses, resort hotels and family housing from the final count; the 88 bases (at least) remaining in Iraq that comprise lots of facts on the ground impeding the SOFA-agreed 2011 “for real” withdrawal deadline; inferring the presence of secret bases from discrepancies between troop deployments and the Pentagon’s official list of bases; and how Africa’s recent colonial history makes it difficult to headquarter AFRICOM on the continent. LISTEN HERE (mp3) 21:50
William Hartung January 14, 2011: William Hartung, Director of the Arms and Security Initiative at the New America Foundation, discusses Lockheed Martin‘s close ties to leading neoconservatives and considerable contribution to US militarism; its domestic expansion into TSA agent training and contract work for the IRS, Postal Service, Census Bureau and FBI; Lockheed’s work on the controversial TIA and TALON domestic intelligence gathering programs – going far beyond the role of a typical defense contractor into a big-brother domestic role; its extensive global forays in diplomatic and even peacekeeping missions that has effectively wrought a company-specific foreign policy; the many bought and paid for Washington politicians, including Buck McKeon and Dan Inouye, in Lockheed’s pocket; and how watchdog groups like Project on Government Oversight are working to expose corruption and conflicts of interest. His recent Tomdispatch article is "Is Lockheed Martin Shadowing You? How a Giant Weapons Maker Became the New Big Brother." LISTEN HERE (mp3) 19:19
Coleen Rowley January 14, 2011: Coleen Rowley, retired FBI agent and 9/11 whistleblower, discusses the recent COINTELPRO-style government infiltration of a peaceful activist group; planned MLK day protests at FBI Washington headquarters and Quantico Marine base in support of Bradley Manning; how the government’s overreaction to WikiLeaks has led to a culture of paranoia, including a memo warning of “insider threats” and suspiciously grumpy employees; how the expansive national security state sacrifices our civil liberties while justifying its bureaucratic existence; and why Manning’s detainment conditions are excessively severe, especially for a nonviolent man who hasn’t been convicted of anything.
