This is sick and twisted but entirely predictable, because extremist conservatives already in the government are now being emboldened by the arrival of the Fox News Tea Party Brigade in the halls of power. • Assembly. First, the state assembly has to pass the bill. That shouldn’t be too difficult; because it’s supposedly “non-fiscal,” there’s no hope of a quorum fight that could be caused by a Democratic walkout. And Assembly Republicans already voted for the whole budget repair bill – at 1 in the morning a couple weeks ago – with only a few defections. So passing the anti-union piece, which was in that other bill, shouldn’t be a big struggle for them. It’s pretty clear this will go to Gov. Scott Walker for his signature.
• Legal challenges. There are going to be a number of legal challenges to this bill. It will not be implemented right away. There’s the near-term challenge of how the bill got passed tonight. It was done in a way that may have violated open meetings laws, by not allowing 24 hours notice for a public meeting of the conference committee. There are other statutes about collective bargaining that may be brought up in court and fought. And there’s the issue of the bill having a fiscal impact. Scott Walker spent three weeks claiming that collective bargaining was a fiscal issue, and then the legislature just passed the bill as “non-fiscal.” Courts will have to wade through a lot of this, and it’s sure to go up to the state Supreme Court. Which brings us to…
• Supreme Court fight. The matchup between David Prosser (R) and JoAnn Kloppenberg (D) for the state Supreme Court on April 5 just got very interesting. It’s a statewide vote, and the balance of power on the state Supreme Court is at stake. Right now there are 4 Republicans and 3 Democrats on the court, but one of those Republicans is Prosser. Expect lots of organizing and millions of dollars poured into this election, which is much like a political election, with debates and everything. If Democrats win, the legality of what took place tonight may be put in greater question.
• General strike. Union leaders are reportedly discussing a general strike, and the mood of the protesters, who stormed the Capitol upon word of the bill, echoes that. You could see some kind of near-term labor walkout, at least in Madison and possibly throughout the state.
• Recalls. This will only energize progressives and labor to get the required signatures for recalls. All 8 Republicans eligible for recall voted to strip public employee unions of their rights, despite clear public opposition. Many of these Republicans, frankly, are going to recall as early as this summer, and if just three of them lose, the balance of power will switch to Democrats in the state Senate. There are also races for three open seats in the state Assembly coming up in May, so even more movement could occur.
• Scott Walker. If his approval ratings were slipping before, they may fall off a cliff now. Walker cannot be recalled until January 2012, and that’s a long way off. But depending on the momentum from the state Supreme Court election, recall elections, Assembly open seats, and legal fights, there could easily be enough support to recall Walker by then.
That’s a thumbnail sketch. This is obviously a huge setback for the labor movement – the bill has a number of provisions designed not just to restrict bargaining rights but stop the flow of union dues in the state – but it also represents an opportunity. This is the beginning, not the end of this fight.

The two huge reactors each at San Onofre and Diablo Canyon are not designed to withstand such powerful shocks. All four are extremely close to major faults. All four reactors are located relatively low to the coast. They are vulnerable to tsunamis like those now expected to hit as many as fifty countries.
~snip~ By the federal Price-Anderson Act of 1957, the owners of the destroyed reactors---including Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison---would be covered by private insurance only up to $11 billion, a tiny fraction of the trillions of dollars worth of damage that would be done. The rest would become the responsibility of the federal taxpayer and the fallout victims. Virtually all homeowner insurance policies in the United States exempt the insurers from liability from a reactor disaster.

A Visitor Watches Bradley Manning’s Mental Health Deteriorate By: Ryan Gallagher For over seven months, Manning has been detained in solitary confinement at a maximum security military brig in Virginia. He has been forced to endure widely condemned conditions and could face the death sentence as a result of charges recently leveled against him. He has yet to receive so much as a preliminary hearing. House, who was born in Alabama, was brought up in a conservative household and was an Eagle Scout as a boy. He admits that growing up he “never really had any big doubts about the US govt or about the fact that people’s due process may be infringed upon.” Consequently, the detainment and subsequent treatment of his friend, Manning, came as something of a shock and an awakening. He helped start the Bradley Manning Advocacy Fund and has appeared on television and radio talking about the treatment of the soldier. It has been a “very jarring” experience, he says. Last week, as part of a media conference call with Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg and former Judge Advocate General Jon Shelburne, House spoke at length about his experiences visiting Manning. What he described was deeply troubling. He spoke about how the severe emotional and physical deprivation forced upon Manning is taking its toll, and suggested US authorities are – by treating him harshly – trying to extract a confession that implicates WikiLeaks’ editor-in-chief, Julian Assange. It is important that the full story, as told by House, is in the public domain. In this case, a single quote as chosen by a journalist is simply not enough. The fact that there has not been another 9/11 since 9/11 shows a FAILURE of America to compete in the world. The stats bear this out. America’s competitiveness in the world has dropped like a stone since 9/11. America is hiding under the table and relying on nickel-and-diming itself to death to pay its enormous Wall St. bailout bills. If America wants to be a world class economic power it must expect, in fact embrace the occasional 9/11. Don’t be pussies. Be competitive and take it as good as you give it. Peter King is a simpering, whiny 9/11 cry-baby type that disgusts me. Why not go after the financial terrorists on Wall St.? Because Peter King is supported by Wall St. terrorists. Or how about Jim Rogers, he teaches at Colombia Business School. But he is also a money manager first, professor second. He likes Gold. Roubini (who does not manage money) thinks he sounds clever by trashing Gold. As Gold goes higher, his reputation will shrink. Too bad, nice guy with great flare. But he’s dead wrong about Gold.
