ALL LINKS OPEN A NEW WINDOW!!! Click on anything below and be INSTANTLY SMARTER! WARNING SHOTS It seems every corporate media outlet has some talking head asking "What do these OWS protesters want?" To answer that question we need to start with a primer at The August Review & Forecast from NOVEMBER 2005 The Global Elite: Who are they? Every bit of thirty-five years of research indicates that there is a relatively small yet diverse group of global players who have been the planners and instigators behind globalization for many decades. The primary driving force that moves this “clique” is greed; the secondary force is the lust for power. In the case of the academics who are key to globalism, a third force is professional recognition and acceptance (a subtle form of egoism and power.) It is also important to understand that core globalists have full understanding of their goals, plans and actions. They are not dimwitted, ignorant, misinformed or naive. The global elite march in three essential columns: Corporate, Political and Academic. For the sake of clarity, these names will be used herein to refer to these three groups. ... This report will attempt to identify and label the core players in the globalization process. The intent is to show the makeup and pattern of the core, not to list every person in it. Nevertheless, many people will be named and their associations and connections revealed. This is done for two reasons. First, it will equip the reader be able to accurately identify other core players as they are brought into focus. Secondly, the reader will be able to pass over minor players who may sound like “big fish” but in fact are only pedestrians. Go read this as they name names in all key global industries. Now comes samsedershow.com's CeeCee who posts Surprise...NOT! Study: It’s True, Bankers Really Do Control the World by Catherine McLean commondreams.com WINTERTHUR, Switzerland - Here’s a gift to Occupy Wall Street protesters around the world: you now have scholarly proof that banks control the world. Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, also known as ETH, have published a paper that argues just 147 companies account for a large chunk of the total economic value of all the transnational companies around the world. No exact dollar figures, but it’s obviously a vast sum. Among the top 50 corporations, 45 operate within the financial industry. Barclays PLC is the most powerful, according to the ETH study, followed by such well-known names as JPMorgan Chase & Co., UBS AG, and Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. The United States takes home first prize with 24 companies cracking the researchers’ top 50 list, followed by the U.K. with 8, France with 5, Japan with 4, and Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands tying with 2 companies each. Canada has one company in the researchers’ top 50: Sun Life Financial, Inc. secures the 35th spot. Continue reading at the link. And here's another SHOCKING HEADLINE at ABC News Top 1 Percent's Income Grew 275 Percent From 1979 to 2007 The income of the richest 1 percent in the U.S. soared 275 percent from 1979 to 2007, but the bottom 20 percent grew by just 18 percent, new government data shows. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a study this week that compared real after-tax household income between 1979 and 2007, which were both after recessions and had similar overall economic activity. While the income of the richest 1 percent nearly tripled, increases were smaller down the economic ladder. After the 1 percent, income for the next highest 20 percent grew by 65 percent, much faster than it did for the remaining 80 percent of the population but still lagging well behind the top percentile. David Cay Johnston digs deep into Beyond the 1 percent The U.S. tax debate tends to focus on the top 1 percent — their share of income taxes and their tax rates. Anti-tax groups encourage this focus, now embraced by the Occupy demonstrators on Wall Street and across America. Problem is, the top 1 percent is a very misleading measure of who pays federal income taxes. It mixes doctors and billionaires, masking the taxes paid by the middle class and the affluent. Everyone seems to know that about half of Americans paid no income taxes in 2009 and that the top 1 percent paid about 37 percent of the income taxes. But how many people know that households making less than $75,000 collectively paid more federal income tax than those making $1 million or more? Or that income taxed at the next-to-lowest rate, 15 percent, brought in more government revenue than all capital gains taxes plus the two top brackets, which apply only to the top 2 percent of earners? Or that almost half of the top 1 percent made less than $500,000? Or that five out of six made less than $1 million? ... Economically, those just entering the top 1 percent have nothing in common with those in the top tenth of the top 1 percent. Someone at the entry point for the top 1 percent would need 29 years to make $10 million, and more than 2,900 years to make $1 billion. The point is that while all those in the top 1 percent are certainly well off, the vast majority still go to work every day. Almost half of the top 1 percent, or 1.4 million taxpayers, make $344,000 to $500,000. More than 1.1 million make $999,999 or less. The bottom half of the top 1 percent rely on salaries for about two-thirds of their income. They get modest income from capital but rely mostly on their labor, giving them more in common with Joe Sixpack than Warren Buffett. ONE IN A THOUSAND: A much better measure than the top 1 percent would be the top tenth of 1 percent. The government does not break out this group, but Emmanuel Saez, a University of California economist, and others have. The Saez analysis of tax return data shows that through 2008, the top one-in-a-thousand taxpayers had average income in recent years that ranged between $5.2 million and $7.5 million annually. Just investing that much in corporate bonds will produce enough interest income to keep someone in the top 1 percent. Furthermore, inside the top 1 percent, those with the highest incomes pay the lowest tax rates. The top 1 percent paid an average income tax rate of 24 percent in 2009, IRS data shows. That is almost exactly the rate paid by those making $500,000 to $1 million. Those who made $1 million to $10 million paid a higher rate, 26 percent. But those making more than $10 million paid a significantly lower rate, 23.3 percent. ... Continuing to focus on the top 1 percent will mislead us about who pays federal income taxes. That focus should be on the middle class and the upper middle class, and then on the top tenth of 1 percent. And on whether our tax system is helping create wealth and jobs or destroying them. Our own stealth msgeaux finds this VIDEO interview with Michael Hudson ... recently interviewed on the Renegade Economists following his visit to Medvedev’s Global Policy Forum Russian Ripoff Just a snip from the transcript:
KF: And so 30 years on from glasnost there must be quite some sense of concern about where the Russian economy has ended up.
MH: There certainly is. It’s been losing not only capital flight of $25 billion a year to the west but its people have been emigrating and President Putin, now Prime Minister Putin, has said that the demographic effect of just privatizing Russian real estate, and industry and following western advice has lost maybe 30 million Russians from what the normal demographic growth would be to 2050. So the effect of neo-liberal financial policy has been more devastating to Russia than WW2.
KF: 30 million people have gone due to neo-liberal policies?
MH: That’s right. The birth rate has fallen, life spans are shortening, and this is throughout the former Soviet Union. People of working age are emigrating. Instead of getting rid of the old Stalinist bureaucracy the neo-liberals simply privatized it and the result of course is corruption. Now public officials that used to be in charge of handing out public policies and administering them- not very efficiently its true – simply say give us a bribe or we won’t work. ...
(Sound familiar, Wisconsin? Ohio? Maine? New Jersey? Even Guvnor Moonbeam! The list goes on... -Ed.) The west said, oh, you’re not competitive and what the Russians didn’t realize is that all of this was very self serving to the west. The West, especially the American planners- the Harvard boys* that went over said, well, we really don’t want is for Russia ever to be a military threat. We’d like to conquer it, to break it up, let’s now just slam them at the end of the cold war. So without an industrial, manufacturing base there can’t really be much of a military. So the first thing they did was say – get rid of your manufacturing, get rid of your engineering, begin charging for your schooling, close down the schools – you don’t need engineers all you really need to do is make a hole in the ground. .... And so they followed the Harvard advice* to give away the oil, the nickel companies, the mineral resources, and that’s how they got the money to begin sending it all to the west. There wasn’t any Russian money to buy these companies because the IMF and World Bank wiped out Russian savers with a hyper inflation by getting rid of all the capital controls and letting the rouble float. So it was just one bad advice after another and now the Russians realize they’ve been taken.
GO WATCH NOW! Yeah the Haa-vaad Boyz! NAOMI KLIEN knows who they are! Did you get to SHOCK DOCTRINE's Chapter 11 yet? Look at pps. 262-294. From The Progressive January 2009: The Great Recession“Spread the truth—the laws of economics are like the laws of engineering,” he said while at the World Bank. “One set of laws works everywhere.” You can find this quote in Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, a must-read. She points out how Summers ran roughshod over Russia’s parliament to impose economic shock therapy there in 1993, when he had moved over to Treasury. “The momentum for Russian reform must be reinvigorated and intensified,” Summers said, after the parliament had refused to go along. Shortly after that comment, the International Monetary Fund threatened to withhold a $1.5 billion loan. So Boris Yeltsin dissolved and attacked parliament, abolished the constitution, and bowed to the IMF’s and Summers’s demands. Summers kept the heat on, demanding that “privatization, stabilization, and liberalization” must all be completed post-haste, Klein reports. The results were catastrophic. “Russia’s ‘economic reforms’ can claim credit for the impoverishment of seventy-two million people in only eight years,” Klein writes. Zerohedge's Tyler Durden pens "Adolf Merkel": Presenting The Greek Gratitude For The 50% Debt Haircut One would think that considering that their debt, or rather about 60% of it, was haircut over the past 2 days, the Greeks would be grateful to Germany who not only orchestrated this transaction over the vocal protests of her French vertically challenged counterpart, but effectively has pledged a substantial portion of German GDP to preserve not only the Greek welfare state but soon that of all the other European countries. One would be wrong. Following up on last week's Bank of America's HOLY BAILOUT - Federal Reserve Now Backstopping $75 Trillion Of Bank Of America's Derivatives Trades Bloomberg now reports BofA Derivatives Transfer Draws Scrutiny Eighteen lawmakers signed onto letters from Representative Brad Miller and Senator Sherrod Brown seeking information about whether agencies consulted on the transfer considered the potential impact on the bank’s health and customer accounts. “Because of the favored treatment of derivative contracts in receivership, it appears highly likely that losses on derivatives would result in losses to insured deposits ultimately borne by taxpayers,” Miller wrote in his letter, which was signed by eight House Democrats. The transfers were first reported by Bloomberg News on Oct. 18. ... Bank of America Response: “Bank of America serves clients needs, including with cash and derivatives instruments, through many of its affiliates, including the bank,” Jerry Dubrowski, a Bank of America spokesman, said today in an e-mail. “This is permissible in the current regulatory environment and it is not expected to significantly change with the implementation of Dodd-Frank.” Moving derivatives contracts between units of a bank holding company is restricted under Section 23A of the Federal Reserve Act, which is designed to keep lenders’ affiliates from benefiting from federal subsidies and protect banks from excessive risk originating at non-bank affiliates. ... Brown’s letter, dated today and signed by 10 senators including Carl Levin, the Michigan lawmaker who leads the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sought similar information and questioned whether the Fed explicitly granted an exemption and whether the transfer was legal. ... Andrew Gray, a spokesman for the FDIC, declined to comment on the letters. Barbara Hagenbaugh, a spokeswoman for the Fed, said in an e-mail that the central bank had received the letters and would respond. Dean DeBuck, a spokesman for the OCC, didn’t have immediate comment on the letters. ... Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent who supported legislation to separate trading operations from commercial banking, said the transaction is a “perfect example why we should break up too-big-to-fail financial behemoths.” “If federal regulators give the green light to Bank of America to move its risky derivative schemes it acquired from Merrill Lynch into its federally insured commercial banking subsidiary that would be outrageous,” Sanders said. Go Bernie! Next we go to Tomgram: Glenn Greenwald, How the Rich Subverted the Legal System "Now, he’s written a new book, just out today, With Liberty and Justice for Some: How the Law Is Used to Destroy Equality and Protect the Powerful, that -- again, who could be surprised? -- is surely the book for the Occupy Wall Street moment in this country. Riveting to read, it’s a must for understanding how immunity and impunity became, economically and legally, a way of life for the Washington and Wall Street elite. -Tom" Read on for Immunity and Impunity in Elite America How the Legal System Was Deep-Sixed and Occupy Wall Street Swept the Land As intense protests spawned by Occupy Wall Street continue to grow, it is worth asking: Why now? The answer is not obvious. After all, severe income and wealth inequality have long plagued the United States. In fact, it could reasonably be claimed that this form of inequality is part of the design of the American founding -- indeed, an integral part of it. Income inequality has worsened over the past several years and is at its highest level since the Great Depression. This is not, however, a new trend. Income inequality has been growing at rapid rates for three decades. ... Not only have the overwhelming majority of Americans long acquiesced to vast income and wealth disparities, but some of those most oppressed by these outcomes have cheered it loudly. Americans have been inculcated not only to accept, but to revere those who are the greatest beneficiaries of this inequality. In the 1980s, this paradox -- whereby even those most trampled upon come to cheer those responsible for their state -- became more firmly entrenched.... Implicit in this framework was the claim that inequality was justified and legitimate. The core propagandistic premise was that the rich were rich because they deserved to be. They innovated in industry, invented technologies, discovered cures, created jobs, took risks, and boldly found ways to improve our lives. In other words, they deserved to be enriched. Indeed, it was in our common interest to allow them to fly as high as possible because that would increase their motivation to produce more, bestowing on us ever greater life-improving gifts. We should not, so the thinking went, begrudge the multimillionaire living behind his 15-foot walls for his success; we should admire him. ... This is the mentality that enabled massive growth in income and wealth inequality over the past several decades without much at all in the way of citizen protest. And yet something has indeed changed. It’s not that Americans suddenly woke up one day and decided that substantial income and wealth inequality are themselves unfair or intolerable. What changed was the perception of how that wealth was gotten and so of the ensuing inequality as legitimate. Many Americans who once accepted or even cheered such inequality now see the gains of the richest as ill-gotten, as undeserved, as cheating. Most of all, the legal system that once served as the legitimizing anchor for outcome inequality, the rule of law -- that most basic of American ideals, that a common set of rules are equally applied to all -- has now become irrevocably corrupted and is seen as such. ... .... It is now clearly understood that, rather than apply the law equally to all, Wall Street tycoons have engaged in egregious criminality -- acts which destroyed the economic security of millions of people around the world -- without experiencing the slightest legal repercussions. Giant financial institutions were caught red-handed engaging in massive, systematic fraud to foreclose on people’s homes and the reaction of the political class, led by the Obama administration, was to shield them from meaningful consequences. Rather than submit on an equal basis to the rules, through an oligarchical, democracy-subverting control of the political process, they now control the process of writing those rules and how they are applied. Today, it is glaringly obvious to a wide range of Americans that the wealth of the top 1% is the byproduct not of risk-taking entrepreneurship, but of corrupted control of our legal and political systems. Thanks to this control, they can write laws that have no purpose than to abolish the few limits that still constrain them, as happened during the Wall Street deregulation orgy of the 1990s. They can retroactively immunize themselves for crimes they deliberately committed for profit, as happened when the 2008 Congress shielded the nation’s telecom giants for their role in Bush’s domestic warrantless eavesdropping program. It is equally obvious that they are using that power not to lift the boats of ordinary Americans but to sink them. In short, Americans are now well aware of what the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the Senate, Illinois’s Dick Durbin, blurted out in 2009 about the body in which he serves: the banks “frankly own the place.” Watch Glenn Greenwald on DN! below. News Dissector Danny Schecter writes at Consortiumnews.com The MSM’s Fear of OWSBut as FAIR notes Cohen goes on to piss on the protests. Here’s FAIR’s headline: “Richard Cohen: OWS isn’t Anti-Semitic — Just Clueless, Repugnant” Here’s how Cohen put it: “This right-wing attempt to discredit both the Occupy Wall Street movement and the Democratic Party’s hesitant embrace of it is reprehensible. It’s made possible, however, because no one this side of the Moon knows precisely what the Occupy Wall Street movement is trying to do. On a daily basis it marches off to some location to highlight what we all know – that Wall Street guys are rich – and their slogans suggest a tired socialism that is as repugnant to me as the felonious capitalism that produced the mortgage bubble and the impoverishment of millions of Americans.”I have hung out with [WaPo's] Richard [Cohen] at the World Economic Forum in Davos in years past. It’s the intellectual corporate playground of the 1 percent and I don’t remember anything he wrote with this cranky and nasty tone about greedy CEOs who were getting rich off the poor and the middle-class. It would be easy to denounce this hypocrisy, but it is worse because clearly the poobahs of the media lack the capacity to critique their own complicity in the media’s failure to expose that “felonious capitalism” when it might have done some good. They are threatened by a movement that is winning public support because it is also a repudiation of their own elite journalism in the service of the status quo. Wait there's more! Bob Alexander at OpEd News explains in The TrickProfessor Hare described psychopaths as "intraspecies predators." I don’t understand how they think. The same way I have no idea what is going on in the mind of a boa constrictor as it squeezes life out of its prey. But I don’t need to know how a psychopath thinks. All we need to understand is that they have become our masters. The leaders and law makers in the government are psychopaths. The heads of the media, the military, and Wall Street are intraspecies predators. They are in complete control. We are ruled by monsters. You don’t think so? You can’t accept the idea that our society is completely dominated by these inhuman freaks? Well … ask yourself a couple of questions. Who does the system protect? And who does the system prosecute? ... Wall Street, immensely aided by the government, committed the biggest financial fraud in human history. All the bailouts add up to more than the cost of the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Marshall Plan, the New Deal, and the landing on the moon … COMBINED! And who’s been arrested? The people protesting the corruption. The Occupy Movement will last until The State moves them out. It will be brutal. It will be violent. And it will not be covered truthfully on the Nightly News. Oh there will be hundreds if not thousands of cell-phone videos of The State wiping out the Occupy Movement on YouTube but the story most Americans will believe will be the one presented on their wide screen TV’s. They didn’t tell us the truth about Iraq … why would we think they’ll honestly cover the routing of the Occupy Movement? We’ve got to realize that psychopaths play for keeps and they have enough power to use it to stay in power. They don’t play the Right vs. Left Game. They control the game. They push buttons to make Conservatives jump one way and Liberals jump another. ... We must commit ourselves to the non-violent, absolute refusal to submit to psychopathic controls no matter the consequences. We must have a National Strike for starters. We don’t have to get our feet wet. Just stick our big toe in. If we can’t get it together to stay home and unplug from the psychopathic system for One Day … then we won’t ever get ourselves from Step One (a) to Step One (b). We can’t negotiate with the people who have already won. The only thing left for us is to say … “No.” Rolling Stone's Matt Taibbi adds in Occupy Wall Street: Washington Still Doesn't Get It The fact that both of the following things took place in the middle of the full fever of OWS, when everyone is supposedly trying to placate anti-banker sentiment and Obama and the DCCC are supposedly pledging support of the protesters, shows how completely bankrupt this system is and how necessary street-level protests have become. Popular uprising is probably the only move left to stop developments like the following: 1) Bank of America is shifting a huge collection of Merrill Lynch derivatives contracts onto its own federally-insured balance sheet. ... Again and again, the Fed proves it has no appetite for allowing Wall Street to eat its own pain, and continually encourages banks to stick the government with its losses and bad assets. This move will allow Bank of America to keep a Band-Aid over its disastrous financial situation far longer than it would be able to in a genuinely free market. People should be outraged at this development. 2) Barack Obama is apparently expressing willingness to junk big chunks of Sarbanes-Oxley in exchange for support for his jobs program. Business leaders are balking at creating new jobs unless Obama makes compliance with S-O voluntary for all firms valued at under $1 billion. Here's how to translate this move: companies are saying they can't attract investment unless they can hide their financials from investors. ... If the financial crisis proved anything, it's that Wall Street companies in particular have been serial offenders in the area of dishonest accounting and book-cooking. Sarbanes-Oxley is obviously no panacea, but removing it in exchange for a temporary, election-year job boost is exactly the kind of myopic, absurdly irresponsible shit that got us into this mess in the first place. For Obama to pull this in the middle of these protests is crazy. More TaibbiBlog Wall Street Isn't Winning – It's Cheating Earlier that same day, I'd taped a TV segment on CNN with Will Cain from the National Review, and we got into an argument on the air. Cain and I agreed about a lot of the problems on Wall Street, but when it came to the protesters, we disagreed on one big thing. Cain said he believed that the protesters are driven by envy of the rich. "I find the one thing [the protesters] have in common revolves around the human emotions of envy and entitlement," he said. "What you have is more than what I have, and I'm not happy with my situation." Cain seems like a nice enough guy, but I nearly blew my stack when I heard this. When you take into consideration all the theft and fraud and market manipulation and other evil shit Wall Street bankers have been guilty of in the last ten-fifteen years, you have to have balls like church bells to trot out a propaganda line that says the protesters are just jealous of their hard-earned money. Think about it: there have always been rich and poor people in America, so if this is about jealousy, why the protests now? The idea that masses of people suddenly discovered a deep-seated animus/envy toward the rich – after keeping it strategically hidden for decades – is crazy. ... And we hate the rich? Come on. Success is the national religion, and almost everyone is a believer. Americans love winners. But that's just the problem. These guys on Wall Street are not winning – they're cheating. And as much as we love the self-made success story, we hate the cheater that much more. In this country, we cheer for people who hit their own home runs – not shortcut-chasing juicers like Bonds and McGwire, Blankfein and Dimon. That's why it's so obnoxious when people say the protesters are just sore losers who are jealous of these smart guys in suits who beat them at the game of life. This isn't disappointment at having lost. It's anger because those other guys didn't really win. And people now want the score overturned. All weekend I was thinking about this “jealousy” question, and I just kept coming back to all the different ways the game is rigged. People aren't jealous and they don’t want privileges. They just want a level playing field, and they want Wall Street to give up its cheat codes, things like: FREE MONEY. ... CREDIT AMNESTY.... STUPIDITY INSURANCE.... UNGRADUATED TAXES.... GET OUT OF JAIL FREE... The point being: we have a massive police force in America that outside of lower Manhattan prosecutes crime and imprisons citizens with record-setting, factory-level efficiency, eclipsing the incarceration rates of most of history's more notorious police states and communist countries. But the bankers on Wall Street don't live in that heavily-policed country. There are maybe 1000 SEC agents policing that sector of the economy, plus a handful of FBI agents. There are nearly that many police officers stationed around the polite crowd at Zucotti park. These inequities are what drive the OWS protests. People don't want handouts. It's not a class uprising and they don't want civil war -- they want just the opposite. They want everyone to live in the same country, and live by the same rules. It's amazing that some people think that that's asking a lot. Read the entire post for all the sordid details. Jerry Policoff at OpEdNews alerts us that Obama Admin Seeks Permission To Lie In Response To Freedom Of Information Requests - Even To The Courts One of the President Obama's first promises after becoming President of the United States was a commitment to usher in a new era of unprecedented government transparency . Instead the Obama administration has exhibited what may be an unprecedented obsession with government secrecy including blocking numerous law suits by invoking the doctrine of "State Secrets." The administration has even come up with an interpretation of the Patriot Act which many in Congress who have seen it claim is overly broad and bestows more power on the Executive Branch than was intended by Congress when they passed it. Unfortunately those in Congress who have seen this document are not permitted to divulge its content, and we, the public, cannot see it because the administration has chosen to classify it as a "State Secret." In other words, you might be doing something that the Obama Administration believes violates the Patriot Act, but you won't know it until they indict you for breaking a law you did not know existed (I might be breaking it just by penning and publishing this article). Now the Obama/Holder Justice Department is attempting to re-write the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), empowering or even compelling government agencies to deny the very existence of records they know to exist if they believe they are legitimately exempted from disclosure. Of course they are most likely the sole arbiter of whether they are indeed exempt from disclosure. In effect the Obama/Holder Justice Department wants to be free to legally lie about the existence of records in response to FOIA requests. Apparently they want to avoid the embarrassment and inconvenience of being officially rebuked by the courts for doing exactly that (lying to a Federal judge), as occurred earlier this year when, in a strongly worded opinion, U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney wrote that the "Government cannot, under any circumstance, affirmatively mislead the Court." The solution is simple: re-write the law so the government, in many circumstances, can affirmatively mislead the court. Despite substantial opposition by such groups as the ACLU, The National Press Club, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, OpentheGovernment.org., Judicial Watch, et al to this radical re-write of thse FOIA Law , this controversial effort by the Obama Administration to evade the very transparency it so passionately promised to deliver has been virtually ignored by the mainstream media which is supposed to the guardian of the people's right to know. Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican or neither, this move by the Obama administration should trouble you deeply. Is this change we can believe in??? Below are snippets of reports on this controversy, none of them from a mainstream media source. That was not my intent. I just could not find any. I learned about it just this morning in an e-mail from the National Law Journal.... Oh boy go read the rest! JEN shows us In Pictures: Gulf seafood industry struggling by Erika Blumenfeld at AlJazerra "Over a year after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, local seafood businesses are closing due to smaller catches." BP Granted Permission to Renew Gulf Deep Sea Drilling reports Reuters via US News PLUS BP to expand North Sea oilfields by Richard Wachman guardian.co.uk. BLUEMOON finds at alternet How Homelessness Became an Occupy Wall Street Issue The Occupy Wall Streeters are beginning to discover what homeless people have known all along--that most ordinary activities are illegal when performed in American streets. And MADDY has a very long first-hand account By Lili Loofbourow from Oakland you need to read The Livestream Ended: How I Got Off My Computer And Onto The Street At Occupy Oakland A SNIP: To sum up: the only two mainstream media live-feeds switched off at precisely the same instant—the minute before fifteen police departments working together engulfed a peaceful group of protesters in tear gas. That crucial minute, when the media (whether by accident or in compliance with police orders) enabled the police to tear-gas peaceful American citizens untelevised, shares something with the time of day recorded by those chalk shadows on the sidewalk. It's an ephemeral moment, but it lasted much, much longer than a minute should. It's a shadow whose original has disappeared, and it's all the more significant for that. Given our image-saturated society, it's hard to explain how the absence of an image can be more dramatic, a bigger scandal, than the hundreds of disturbing videos of citizens being attacked by police. We're used to thinking of surveillance as the enemy. Big Brother abides, and I can testify that there's something undeniably eerie about the news helicopters hovering over my neighborhood. But for those helicopters hanging in our sky for hours and hours, waiting for a story, to disappear precisely when the story breaks—that's a different kind of sinister, a different kind of wrong. The Nation's GREG MITCHELL has been LIVE BLOGGING 7:35 The always quotable Charles P. Pierce at Esquire: "Make no mistake about it: The actions of the police department in Oakland last night were a military assault on a legitimate political demonstration. That it was a milder military assault than it could have been, which is to say it wasn’t a massacre, is very much beside the point. There was no possible provocation that warranted this display of force. (Graffiti? Litter? Rodents? Is the Oakland PD now a SWAT team for the city’s health department?) If you are a police department in this country in 2011, this is something you do because you have the power and the technology and the license from society to do it. This is a problem that has been brewing for a long time. It predates the Occupy movement for more than a decade. It even predates the ‘war on terror,’ although that has acted as what the arson squad would call an “accelerant” to the essential dynamic. Basic law enforcement in this country is thoroughly, totally militarized. It is militarized at its most basic levels. " Perhaps the FIRST OWS-like movement happened at the WTO Meeting in Seattle where The Police provoked the "riot" to justify busting heads and chemical warfare on domestic protesters (see The Real Battle for Seattle for more details). Every WTO, G20, Bilderburg, IMF meeting worldwide has since been met with vast protests accompanied by black helicopters, riot-gear police, tear gas and even sonic weapons. The last G20 meeting on U.S. soil was in Pittsburgh, PA. where all of the above happened in 2009. Last month a then-visiting Carnegie Mellon University Professor Karen Pipert Bystander Sues Pittsburgh Over Sonic Device At G-20 while Pittsburgh Police Deny G-20 'Sound Cannon' Allegations and then Maker Of Sound Device Disputes ACLU's Pittsburgh Lawsuit. Surprised? It was only a few weeks ago DN!'s Amy Goodman and her colleagues reached a settlement with the St. Paul/Minneapolis Police Dept. from when she and her DN! colleagues were BRUTALLY ARRESTED at the RNC convention in 2008. Detect a pattern here? Soviet Ex-pat comedian Yakov Smirnov used to say, "What I really like about American police is that they fire warning shots. In the Soviet Union, the police just shoot you and call that a warning to the next guy." Keep this in mind as you read about and watch all the police violence in Oakland, Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, NYC, DC and all across the nation and the globe against non-violent unarmed protesters. In an hour-long interview with Amy Goodman non-violence activist J. Brian Willson who is traveling the country visiting solidarity protests with Occupy Wall Street finishes with this: "The occupation movement may fizzle this winter. Who knows, as the weather gets harsh in the northern climates? But I don’t think that it can be really destroyed, because it’s actually tapping into what I call these ancient archetypes of empathy, mutual respect, cooperation and equity, or a sense of fairness. Those are ancient archetypes embedded in our genetic code." Watch this GRIPPING interview below at Democracy Now! We congratulate THE 2011 WORLD CHAMPION SAINT LOUIS CARDINALS! »»» FRIDAY SHOW Brian Willson’s "Blood on the Tracks" @ Democracy NOW! WATCH NOW! "Blood on the Tracks": Brian Willson’s Memoir of Transformation from Vietnam Vet to Radical Pacifist Today we spend the hour with a man who put his life on the line twice: once when he served in the Vietnam War and again when he came back. On September 1, 1987, Brian Willson took part in a nonviolent political action outside the Concord Naval Weapons Station in California. He sat down on the train tracks along with two other veterans to try to stop a U.S. government munitions train sending weapons to Central America during the time of the Contra wars. The train didn’t stop. Willson suffered 19 broken bones, a fractured skull and lost both of his legs. "Before, I had spent many months in Nicaragua in the war zones, and I had been to El Salvador talking to guerrillas and talking to human rights workers, understanding the incredible extent of murders that were going on and maimings and displacements, because of fear of being murdered," Willson said. He decided, "I have to at least escalate my own nonviolent occupation, if you will, of the tracks." In retrospect, Willson added, "I regret that I lost my legs, but I don’t regret that I was there. I did what I said I was going to do... Following orders, I discovered, is not what I’m about." Today, he is traveling the country visiting solidarity protests with Occupy Wall Street, where some of his fellow protesters are also veterans. He’s also been talking about his new memoir, "Blood on the Tracks: The Life and Times of S. Brian Willson." On the West Coast, he completed much of the tour on his handcycle. The 1st Amendment is Our Permit WASHINGTON - October 14 - This is an emergency appeal. Spread it widely. Our permit to occupy is called “The First Amendment.” This morning, Occupy Wall Street protesters celebrated when New York authorities beat a last-minute retreat from clearing Liberty Plaza – as hundreds of labor and other activists rushed to defend the square. But at the same time this morning, dozens of state troopers in riot gear cleared out Occupy Denver protests. In cities across the country, Occupy protesters have faced police violence and arrests. Some occupations have been forcibly removed while others have stood their ground successfully. The authorities say we don’t have the proper permits to occupy public spaces. Our permit to occupy is The First Amendment. Quickly sign the following statement which will be delivered to mayors, police chiefs and major media across the country:
Our permit to occupy public squares and parks is in The First Amendment, which affirms “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” When people across the Middle East occupied public squares, leaders in Washington mostly cheered those protesters and warned Middle Eastern governments not to use force to clear them. Those other societies don’t have a First Amendment. Yet Washington affirmed the universal right to assembly and protest. We do have a First Amendment. The force being used to clear nonviolent protesters from public squares in our country is unacceptable. It must stop.
Action for a Progressive Future (the organization that runs RootsAction) is a nonprofit, progressive, public policy advocacy group that will engage citizens in the democratic process and help make sure legislators hear their voices.

October2011.org October 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions. Take this pledge at October2011.org
"I pledge that if any U.S. troops, contractors, or mercenaries remain in Afghanistan on Thursday, October 6, 2011, as that occupation goes into its 11th year, I will commit to being in Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., with others on that day or the days immediately following, for as long as I can, with the intention of making it our Tahrir Square, Cairo, our Madison, Wisconsin, where we will NONVIOLENTLY resist the corporate machine by occupying Freedom Plaza to demand that America's resources be invested in human needs and environmental protection instead of war and exploitation. We can do this together. We will be the beginning."

He’s a strange mix of fact, exaggeration, analysis, rant, knowledge, opinion, journalism, poetic insight, indignation, persona and humor. He is, in short, an entertaining enigma. Gareth Porter October 26, 2011: Gareth Porter, independent historian and journalist for IPS News, discusses the 20 year US campaign of death and destruction in Iraq, seemingly coming to an end after the Iraqi government rejected a troop extension beyond 2011; how Ahmed Chalabi convinced the neoconservatives a post-Saddam Iraq would be emphatically pro-Israel; why it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the current Iraqi government – composed largely of former exiles living in Iran – would be closely allied with Iran; how Nouri al-Maliki tricked the Bush administration into negotiating a troop withdrawal deadline (that became the definitive SOFA); and why the gigantic US embassy is destined to become a museum of US atrocities.

John Glaser October 27, 2011: John Glaser, Assistant Editor at Antiwar.com, discusses Obama’s “let this be a lesson to the rest of you dictators (except the ones we like)” comment about the beaten, sodomized, executed Gadhafi; the doctors and nurses in Bahrain who were arrested and tortured for helping injured protesters; the continuing Bahrain protests despite the crackdowns – although the media ignores them anyway; why the Libya War was essentially waged as a PR campaign to showcase the US as a benevolent actor instead of the Arab spring antagonist; and how continued friendly relations with Uzbekistan show the Obama administration is more concerned with Afghanistan War logistics than human rights.
James Bovard October 27, 2011: James Bovard, author of Attention Deficit Democracy, discusses the PATRIOT Act’s ten year anniversary and its legacy of unlimited government power; why there’s nothing more permanent that a temporary government program; the silence of Democrats who stopped protesting the PATRIOT Act’s provisions once Obama took office; why a large majority of Americans have no problem with their government assassinating “bad guys” deemed too inconvenient or difficult to prosecute; and why the MSM thinks Ron Paul is crazy for challenging unlimited police powers, even while the TSA turns Tennessee into East Germany.

Obama: All U.S. troops will leave Iraq by year's end.

**The war is over.**

Wow. There it is. THE WAR IS OVER. Did YER local FISHWRAP put THAT headline in 100-point on the front page Saturday? DID IT? And if it DID would you have bought one? Moreover would you BELIEVE that headline? With the largest U.S. embassy ever built in HISTORY and multiple MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR "Forward Operating Bases" all remaining on Iraq land? DENNIS: Longtime Iraq war critic Dennis Kucinich was not happy with President Barack Obama's Friday announcement about the war.The Ohio Democratic congressman's statement: "As one of the first Members of Congress to oppose the war in Iraq, I welcome the President’s announcement that he will withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq at the end of the year. The U.S. has spent over $806 billion on a war that was based on lies. The war in Iraq has cost the lives of over 4,421 U.S. troops and an estimated 1 million innocent Iraqis. Yet today’s announcement fails to acknowledge that we will simply be replacing one U.S. occupation with another. Under the State Department’s current plans to take the place of the Department of Defense as the main U.S. force in Iraq post-military withdrawal, we are still maintaining a massive presence there, now with the State Department and its heavily armed private security contractors. And it is the presence of armed U.S. contractors that is the problem. It will continue to foment instability and violence in Iraq and the region. We need to get out now, not just trade uniforms and personnel. It is reasonable to ask whether the people of Iraq will notice any change." David Swanson reports Troops All Leaving Iraq Except for Thousands of Mercenaries Employed by the State Department, CIA "Obama just spoke and left as more than one reporter shouted "What about Iran?" Oh gawd." and points to this WaPo article All U.S. troops to leave Iraq by the end of 2011 Ah but the Gray Lady tells us Civilians to Take U.S. Lead as Military Leaves Iraq To protect the civilians in a country that is still home to insurgents with Al Qaeda and Iranian-backed militias, the State Department is planning to more than double its private security guards, up to as many as 7,000, according to administration officials who disclosed new details of the plan. Defending five fortified compounds across the country, the security contractors would operate radars to warn of enemy rocket attacks, search for roadside bombs, fly reconnaissance drones and even staff quick reaction forces to aid civilians in distress, the officials said. “I don’t think State has ever operated on its own, independent of the U.S. military, in an environment that is quite as threatening on such a large scale,” said James Dobbins, a former ambassador who has seen his share of trouble spots as a special envoy for Afghanistan, Bosnia, Haiti, Kosovo and Somalia. “It is unprecedented in scale.” Spencer Ackerman at wired.com deadpans The Iraq War Ain’t Over, No Matter What Obama Says But the fact is America’s military efforts in Iraq aren’t coming to an end. They are instead entering a new phase. On January 1, 2012, the State Department will command a hired army of about 5,500 security contractors, all to protect the largest U.S. diplomatic presence anywhere overseas. ... In July, Danger Room exclusively reported that the Department blocked the Congressionally-appointed watchdog for Iraq from acquiring basic information about contractor security operations, such as the contractors’ rules of engagement. That means no one outside the State Department knows how its contractors will behave as they ferry over 10,000 U.S. State Department employees throughout Iraq — which, in case anyone has forgotten, is still a war zone. Since Iraq wouldn’t grant legal immunity to U.S. troops, it is unlikely to grant it to U.S. contractors, particularly in the heat and anger of an accident resulting in the loss of Iraqi life. It’s a situation with the potential for diplomatic disaster. And it’s being managed by an organization with no experience running the tight command structure that makes armies cohesive and effective. You can also expect that there will be a shadow presence by the CIA, and possibly the Joint Special Operations Command, to hunt persons affiliated with al-Qaida. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has conspicuously stated that al-Qaida still has 1,000 Iraqi adherents, which would make it the largest al-Qaida affiliate in the world. So far, there are three big security firms with lucrative contracts to protect U.S. diplomats. Triple Canopy, a longtime State guard company, has a contract worth up to $1.53 billion to keep diplos safe as they travel throughout Iraq. Global Strategies Group will guard the consulate at Basra for up to $401 million. SOC Incorporated will protect the mega-embassy in Baghdad for up to $974 million. State has yet to award contracts to guard consulates in multiethnic flashpoint cities Mosul and Kirkuk, as well as the outpost in placid Irbil. So we ask the question, When is a war not a war? What's another $3,000,000,000 for unaccountable "security" firms anyway? The G-20 weighs in on Greece and the ECB EU Given a Week to Fix Crisis as G-20 Warns of Global Threat at Bloomberg European leaders have one week to settle differences and flesh out a strategy to terminate their sovereign debt crisis as global finance chiefs warn failure to do so would endanger the world economy. Group of 20 finance ministers and central banks concluded weekend talks in Paris endorsing parts of the emerging plan to avoid a Greek default, bolster banks and curb contagion. They set an Oct. 23 summit of European leaders in Brussels as the deadline for it to be delivered. ... The G-20 officials -- who met to prepare for a Nov. 3-4 gathering of leaders in Cannes, France -- said in a statement that the world economy faces “heightened tensions and significant downside risks.” European authorities must “decisively address the current challenges through a comprehensive plan,” they said. The policy makers held out the possibility of rewarding European action with more aid from the International Monetary Fund, while splitting over whether the Washington-based lender’s $390 billion war chest needs topping up. Europe’s latest strategy hinges on putting Greece, whose government forecasts its debt to reach 172 percent of gross domestic product in 2012, on a sustainable path. Austerity has plunged the country deeper into recession and provoked civil unrest that threatens political stability. ... Failure to limit the risk of a default to Greece led to Portugal and Ireland requiring bailouts, and markets are now targeting larger debt-strapped nations such as Italy. Investors are concerned that if the crisis keeps festering, the world economy could face a repeat of the chaos that followed the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. The euro area is already set to suffer a renewed recession, say economists at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. ... A consensus is nevertheless emerging to accelerate the birth of a permanent aid fund by a year to July 2012. This week’s discussions will also look at easing unanimity rules that permit solitary countries to block bailouts. Morgan Stanley’s Fels said the steps could backfire because investors may fail to be lured by the guarantees, harsher writedowns could spark contagion and banks would likely prefer to sell assets and reduce leverage than raise capital. What’s really required is leaders to take a “big step” toward fiscal integration, he said. The coming weekend “is the moment people are expecting something quite impressive,” U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said in Paris. Haha nowhere in the article is what the G-20 will do other than the obvious "failure to do so would endanger the world economy" and the Titans of World Capital can't have that now! Here's another surprise! FDL's D-Day points out how the new GAO Report Shows Multiple Conflict of Interest Cases at Fed Regional Banks The report is here (PDF). In 18 different instances, current and former board members of the Fed regional banks, the ones who pick the Presidents who then sit on the Federal Open Market Committee, “were affiliated with banks and companies who received emergency loans from the Federal Reserve during the financial crisis,” according to the report. There is no restriction on this conflict of interest, or really any, for that matter. And there’s certainly no transparency on how the boards of directors handle conflict of interest. Here are just a couple examples: [...] Until you get the bankers out of the business of picking a substantial chunk of Fed policymakers, you will never, ever have a Fed working in the interests of financial stability, let alone working to pierce asset bubbles. You will have a Fed working for the banks. Because they’re practically one and the same. …Incidentally, the GAO made a series of recommendations on how to strengthen conflict of interest policies and create transparency. The Federal Reserve Board “agreed with GAO’s recommendations and said that it believes all have merit and will work to implement them. The Reserve Banks also said that they will give serious consideration to implementing the recommendations,” according to the report. Of course they did. The GAO recommendations are the least you can do. The proper policy is to end the practice of having bankers pick policymakers at the Fed. Wait there's more! The Daily Bail piles on! HOLY BAILOUT - Federal Reserve Now Backstopping $75 Trillion Of Bank Of America's Derivatives Trades This story from Bloomberg just hit the wires this morning. Bank of America is shifting derivatives in its Merrill investment banking unit to its depository arm, which has access to the Fed discount window and is protected by the FDIC. This means that the investment bank's European derivatives exposure is now backstopped by U.S. taxpayers. Bank of America didn't get regulatory approval to do this, they just did it at the request of frightened counterparties. Now the Fed and the FDIC are fighting as to whether this was sound. The Fed wants to "give relief" to the bank holding company, which is under heavy pressure. This is a direct transfer of risk to the taxpayer done by the bank without approval by regulators and without public input. You will also read below that JP Morgan is apparently doing the same thing with $79 trillion of notional derivatives guaranteed by the FDIC and Federal Reserve. What this means for you is that when Europe finally implodes and banks fail, U.S. taxpayers will hold the bag for trillions in CDS insurance contracts sold by Bank of America and JP Morgan. Even worse, the total exposure is unknown because Wall Street successfully lobbied during Dodd-Frank passage so that no central exchange would exist keeping track of net derivative exposure. This is a recipe for Armageddon. Bernanke is absolutely insane. No wonder Geithner has been hopping all over Europe begging and cajoling leaders to put together a massive bailout of troubled banks. His worst nightmare is Eurozone bank defaults leading to the collapse of the large U.S. banks who have been happily selling default insurance on European banks since the crisis began. The Bloomberg story follows and they add Check out regulator William Black's blistering reaction to this story HERE. See Bill Black with Amy Goodman on DN! below. Meanwhile Four US banks hold a staggering 95.9% of U.S. derivatives: The $600 Trillion Time Bomb That's Set to Explode The world's gross domestic product (GDP) is only about $65 trillion, or roughly 10.83% of the worldwide value of the global derivatives market by Keith Fitz-Gerald globalresearch.ca so BofA (and us now) is on the hook for some 1/6th of THAT?? Nick Turse for Alternet/TomDispatch writes about America’s Secret Empire of Drone Bases: Its Full Extent Revealed for the First Time ... And that leaves at least 56 more such facilities to mention in an expanding American empire of unmanned drone bases being set up worldwide. Despite frequent news reports on the drone assassination campaign launched in support of America’s ever-widening undeclared wars and a spate of stories on drone bases in Africa and the Middle East, most of these facilities have remained unnoted, uncounted, and remarkably anonymous -- until now. Run by the military, the Central Intelligence Agency, and their proxies, these bases -- some little more than desolate airstrips, others sophisticated command and control centers filled with computer screens and high-tech electronic equipment -- are the backbone of a new American robotic way of war. They are also the latest development in a long-evolving saga of American power projection abroad -- in this case, remote-controlled strikes anywhere on the planet with a minimal foreign “footprint” and little accountability. Using military documents, press accounts and other open source information, an in-depth analysis by AlterNet has identified at least 60 bases integral to U.S. military and CIA drone operations. There may, however, be more, since a cloak of secrecy about drone warfare leaves the full size and scope of these bases distinctly in the shadows. Then TomDispatch's Tom Engelhardt adds Wall Street’s Second Occupation: The Rise of the NYPD's Homeland Security State Are drones above New York City next as the police militarize Lower Manhattan?...On a recent visit to the park, I found the streets around the Stock Exchange barricaded and blocked off to traffic, and police everywhere in every form (in and out of uniform) -- on foot, on scooters, on motorcycles, in squad cars with lights flashing, on horses, in paddy wagons or minivans, you name it. At the park’s edge, there is a police observation tower capable of being raised and lowered hydraulically and literally hundreds of police are stationed in the vicinity. I counted more than 50 of them on just one of its sides at a moment when next to nothing was going on -- and many more can be seen almost anywhere in the Wall Street area, lolling in doorways, idling in the subway, ambling on the plazas of banks, and chatting in the middle of traffic-less streets. This might be seen as massive overkill. ... At one level, this is all mystifying. The daily crowds in the park remain remarkably, even startlingly, peaceable. (Any violence has generally been the product of police action.) On an everyday basis, a squad of 10 or 15 friendly police officers could easily handle the situation. There is, of course, another possibility suggested to me by one of the policemen loitering at the Park’s edge doing nothing in particular: “Maybe they’re peaceable because we’re here.” And here's a second possibility: as my friend Steve Fraser, author of Wall Street: America’s Dream Palace, said to me, “This is the most important piece of real estate on the planet and they’re scared. Look how amazed we are. Imagine how they feel, especially after so many decades of seeing nothing like it.” And then there’s a third possibility: that two quite separate universes are simply located in the vicinity of each other and of what, since September 12, 2001, we’ve been calling Ground Zero. Think of it as Ground Zero Doubled, or think of it as the militarized recent American past and the unknown, potentially inspiring American future occupying something like the same space. ... Their stakeout in Zuccotti Park is geared to extreme acts, suicide bombers, and terrorism, as well as to a conception of protest and opposition as alien and enemy-like. They are trying to herd, lock in, and possibly strangle a phenomenon that bears no relation to any of this. They are, that is, policing the wrong thing, which is why every act of pepper spraying or swing of the truncheon, every aggressive act (as in the recent eviction threat to “clean” the park) blows back on them and only increases the size and coverage of the movement. ... Still, we do know one thing. This massive semi-militarized force we continue to call “the police” will, in the coming years, only grow more so. After all, they know but one way to operate. Right now, for instance, over crowds of protesters the police hover in helicopters with high-tech cameras and sensors, but in the future there can be little question that in the skies of cities like New York, the police will be operating advanced drone aircraft. Already, as Nick Turse indicates in a groundbreaking report “America’s Secret Empire of Drone Bases,” the U.S. military and the CIA are filling the global skies with missile-armed drones and the clamor for domestic drones is growing. The first attack on an American neighborhood, not one in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, or Libya, surely lurks somewhere in our future. Empires, after all, have a way of coming home to roost. To illustrate the surveillance and firepower of the NYPD watch this video on 60 Minutes from a few weeks ago Fighting terrorism in New York City Manilla Times (mb.com.ph) reports 'Occupy Wall St.' protest goes global ... Media reported that more than 150,000 people from across Italy took to the streets in Rome, encouraged by Spain’s “Indignados” movement of mostly young people, who began protesting in May at high unemployment and inequality. The demonstration in Madrid on Saturday came exactly five months after Spain’s so-called “Indignados” (indignant) protest movement was born with a rally on May 15 that turned into a sprawling protest camp that occupied Madrid’s central Puerta del Sol for weeks. ... Inspired by Spain’s “indignant” movement and the “Occupy Wall Street” movement in the United States, people took to the streets on Saturday in a rolling action targeting 951 cities in 82 countries around the world. ...Police said around 5,000 people took part in a march on the ECB building in the German financial hub of Frankfurt to protest at capitalist excesses, the perceived injustice of the global financial system and the power of banks. In Berlin, more than 5,000 people marched on the office of Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to police estimates. Anti-globalization group Attac claimed it had mustered 40,000 demonstrators across Germany. The Frankfurt protesters carried placards stating, “You are speculating with our lives,” and, “You are gambling away our future.” Some set up tents and one protester, armed with a sleeping bag and thermal underwear, said he was ‘’perfectly prepared’’ to stay put. In London, protesters – including Wikileaks founder Julian Assange – took part in ‘’Occupy London Stock Exchange (LSX),” a collective that had more than 15,000 fans on Facebook and some 5,000 confirmed attendees. “This movement is not about the destruction of law, but the construction of law,” Assange said according to the Guardian newspaper website, deriding a greedy and corrupt system. ... In Brussels, Belgium, thousands joined a protest march, the Belga news agency reported, adding that a ‘’small group’’ of smartly-dressed people led a counter-protest at the start of the march. The protesters adopted the slogan, ‘’We are the 99 per cent,’’ a reference to the silent majority they say are enduring the consequences of the crisis. Hundreds also gathered across Austria. In Prague, around 200 Czech demonstrators marched past the stock exchange. In South Africa, protests took place in major cities including Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, organized by Operation Ubuntu, which calls itself a ‘’leaderless resistance movement,’’ formed in sympathy with the Occupy Wall Street protests. ...Earlier, hundreds of Australians gathered in Sydney’s business district to protest at ‘’corporate greed’’ - falling short of the thousands of demonstrators that organizers had hoped for. The peaceful demonstration ended with a commitment to picket the Reserve Bank of Australia building for several days. “We need to challenge those who are the most powerful, who control the global economy and have an enormous influence on elected politicians,” chief organizer Mark Goudkamp was quoted as saying by local news agency AAP. Around 100 people also took to the streets of Tokyo, according to Kyodo news agency, while the Japan Times online news portal reported that some 300 people demonstrated on a range of issues, including the handling of this year’s nuclear disaster. ... In Toronto, over 10,000 Canadians blew bubbles, strummed guitars and chanted anti-corporate slogans at peaceful protests across the country Saturday, as part of global demonstrations against corporate greed. An estimated 5,000 people showed up in the city’s financial district, and later set up tents in a nearby park. Thousands also protested in Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, the capital Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver with a wide range of demands, from jobs to a fairer distribution of wealth, greater corporate accountability, “the truth behind ‘9/11,’” a Palestinian state and animal rights. Naomi Wolf: how I was arrested at Occupy Wall Street He gave me a look of pure hate. "Are you going to back down?" he shouted. I stood, immobilised, for a moment. "Are you getting out of my way?" I did not even make a conscious decision not to "fall back" – I simply couldn't even will myself to do so, because I knew that he was not giving a lawful order and that if I stepped aside it would be not because of the law, which I was following, but as a capitulation to sheer force. In that moment's hesitation, he said, "OK," gestured, and my partner and I were surrounded by about 20 officers who pulled our hands behind our backs and cuffed us with plastic handcuffs. Philly Inquirer Staff Writers Quan Nguyen and Robert Moran report Cantor cancels Penn speech, Occupy Philly still protests House Majority Leader Eric Cantor abruptly canceled a speech Friday at the University of Pennsylvania that had become the target of Occupy Philly and other groups. Hundreds of protesters gathered at Penn nonetheless, carrying signs and shouting slogans. Cantor (R., Va.) was scheduled to speak at Penn's Wharton School at 4:30 p.m. but backed out earlier in the afternoon, indicating that it had been his understanding the speech would be open only to people affiliated with the university. In a statement, his office said it "was informed last night by Capitol Police that the University of Pennsylvania was unable to ensure that the attendance policy previously agreed to could be met." Cantor "appreciated the invitation to speak with the students, faculty, alumni, and other members of the UPENN community," according to the statement. The university in turn issued a statement saying it "deeply regrets" that Cantor canceled and suggesting that there had been no change in the attendance policy. "The Wharton speaker series is typically open to the general public, and that is how the event with Majority Leader Cantor was billed. We very much regret if there was any misunderstanding with the majority leader's office on the staging of his presentation," the university said. ... Many of the protesters marched from the Occupy Philly base at City Hall to University City. Mixed in with Penn students and university police, the protesters shouted call-and-response chants such as "Eric Cantor, can't you see / What this movement means to me?" ... Sean Kitchen, a protester and a member of the Occupy Philly outreach committee, said Cantor's cancellation "shows cowardice." The group later stormed into Huntsman, surrounded the lobby, and shouted: "Eric Cantor, come out, come out, wherever you are." More at the link! America wakes to the din of inequity The frustration of protesters railing against the global financial system, and of the 54 per cent of Americans who polls suggest support their calls, is legitimate. The wonder is why it has taken so long for citizens to come out in popular protest across political boundaries. For the last three years, the country has been paralysed by a political gridlock that has put its future on the line. Both Republicans and Democrats are to blame – the Grand Old Party for its callous obstruction of all Democratic initiatives and President Barack Obama for his naĂŻve neglect of the need for muscular leadership. ... Whether or not the protests evolve into a more coherent set of demands, or even become a more lasting political force, remains to be seen. But the cry for change is one that must be heeded. Professor Richard D. Wolff of the New School University, New York City, MR Zine via truth-out compares Capitalism and Poverty Deepening poverty has multiple causes, but the capitalist economic system is major among them. First, capitalism's periodic crises always increase poverty, and the current crisis is no exception. More precisely, how capitalist corporations operate, in or out of crisis, regularly reproduces poverty. At the top of every corporation, its major shareholders (15-20 or fewer) own controlling blocs of shares. They select a board of directors -- usually 15-20 individuals -- who run the corporation. These two tiny groups make all the key decisions: what, how, and where to produce and what to do with the profits. Poverty is one result of this capitalist type of enterprise organization. For example, corporate decisions generally aim to lower the number of workers or their wages or both. They automate, export (outsource) jobs, and replace higher-paid workers by recruiting domestic and foreign substitutes willing to work for less. These normal corporate actions generate rising poverty as the other side of rising profits. When poverty and its miseries "remain always with us," workers tend to accept what employers dish out to avoid losing jobs and falling into poverty. Another major corporate goal is to control politics. Wherever all citizens can vote, workers' interests might prevail over those of directors and shareholders in elections. To prevent that, corporations devote portions of their revenues to finance politicians, parties, mass media, and "think tanks." Their goal is to "shape public opinion" and control what government does. They do not want Washington's crisis-driven budget deficits and national debts to be overcome by big tax increases on corporations and the rich. Instead public discussion and politicians' actions are kept focused chiefly on cutting social programs for the majority. ... Over the years, government interventions like Social Security, Medicare, minimum wage laws, regulations, etc. never sufficed to eradicate poverty. They often helped the poor, but they never ended poverty. The same applies to charities aiding the poor. Poverty always remained. Now capitalism's crisis worsens it again. Something more than government interventions or charity is required to end poverty. One solution: production would have to be organized differently, in a non-capitalist way. Instead of enterprise decisions being made by directors and major shareholders, the workers themselves could collectively and democratically make them. Let's call this Democracy at Work (DAW), since it entails the majority making the key enterprise decisions about what, how, and where to produce and what to do with the profits. If the workers made those decisions, here are some likely results. Primary goals would no longer be to reduce their own numbers or their wages. If technological changes or reduced demand for their outputs required fewer workers, they would likely maintain the wages of workers and retrain them for other jobs meeting growing demands. Workers would not be fired and thereby pushed into poverty. ... A serious commitment to end poverty and its costly social effects requires us to face that capitalism has always reproduced widespread poverty as the other side of profits for a relative few. No wonder such a system has provoked Occupy Wall Street and so many of its signature slogans and demands. Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone explains Why Occupy Wall Street Is Bigger Than Left vs. Right We've similarly heard about MoveOn.org jumping into the demonstrations and attempting, seemingly, to assume leadership roles in the movement. All of this is the flip side of the coin that has people like Breitbart trying to frame OWS as a socialist uprising and a liberal media conspiracy. The aim here is to redraw the protests along familiar battle lines. ... What nobody is comfortable with is a movement in which virtually the entire spectrum of middle class and poor Americans is on the same page, railing against incestuous political and financial corruption on Wall Street and in Washington. The reality is that Occupy Wall Street and the millions of middle Americans who make up the Tea Party are natural allies and should be on the same page about most of the key issues, and that's a story our media won't want to or know how to handle. ... Both traditional constituencies want these companies off the public teat and back swimming on their own in the cruel seas of the free market, where they will inevitably be drowned in their corruption and greed, if they don't reform immediately. This is a major implicit complaint of the OWS protests and it should absolutely strike a nerve with Tea Partiers, many of whom were talking about some of the same things when they burst onto the scene a few years ago. The banks know this. They know they have no "natural" constituency among voters, which is why they spend such fantastic amounts of energy courting the mainstream press and such huge sums lobbying politicians on both sides of the aisle. ... All of which is a roundabout way of saying one thing: beware of provocateurs on both sides of the aisle. This movement is going to attract many Breitbarts, of both the left and right variety. They're going to try to identify fake leaders, draw phony battle lines, and then herd everybody back into the same left-right cage matches of old. Whenever that happens, we just have to remember not to fall for the trap. When someone says this or that person speaks for OWS, don't believe it. This thing is bigger than one or two or a few people, and it isn't part of the same old story. Listen to Taibbi on Majority Report Radio below! Ellie Maclin at OccupyMemphis concurs We Will Not Be Co-Opted! And Michel Chossudovsky at GlobalResearch.ca wonders Occupy Wall Street and "The American Autumn": Is It a "Colored Revolution"? Part I Has the movement or segments within this movement been co-opted? This is an important question, which must be addressed by those who are part of the Occupy Wall Street Movement as well as those who, across America, support real democracy. Introduction - Historically, progressive social movements have been infiltrated, their leaders co-opted and manipulated, through the corporate funding of non-governmental organizations, trade unions and political parties. The ultimate purpose of "funding dissent" is to prevent the protest movement from challenging the legitimacy of the economic elites: [...] At the same time, "manufactured dissent" is intent upon promoting political and social divisions (e.g. within and between political parties and social movements). In turn, it encourages the creation of factions within each and every organization. With regard to the anti-globalization movement, this process of division and fragmentation dates back to the early days of the World Social Forum. ... In the US, bi-partisanship is not the result of the interplay of Congressional party politics. A handful of powerful corporate lobby groups control both the Republicans and the Democrats. The "bi-partisan consensus" is established by the elites who operate behind the scenes. It is enforced by the main corporate lobby groups, which exert a stranglehold over both major political parties. In turn, the leaders of the AFL-CIO have also been co-opted by the corporate establishment against the grassroots of the US labor movement. The leaders of organized labor attend the annual meetings of the Davos World Economic Forum (WEF). They collaborate with the Business Roundtable. But at the same time, the grassroots of the US labor movement has sought to to carry out organizational changes which contribute to democratizing the leadership of individual trade unions. The elites will promote a "ritual of dissent" with a high media profile, with the support of network TV, the corporate news as well as the internet. The economic elites -- which control major foundations -- also oversee the funding of numerous civil society organizations, which historically have been involved in the protest movement against the established economic and social order. The programs of many NGOs (including those involved in the Occupy Wall Street Movement) rely heavily on funding from private foundations including the Ford, Rockefeller, MacArthur, Tides foundations, among others.... Historically, the anti-globalization movement which emerged in the 1990s has opposed Wall Street and the Texas oil giants controlled by Rockefeller, et al. Yet the foundations and charities of Rockefeller, Ford et al have, over the years, generously funded progressive anti-capitalist networks as well as environmentalists (opposed to Big Oil) with a view to ultimately overseeing and shaping their various activities. In the course of the last decade, "colored revolutions" have emerged in several countries. The "colored revolutions" are US intelligence ops which consist in covertly supporting protest movements with a view to triggering "regime change" under the banner of a pro-democracy movement. "Colored revolutions" are supported by the National Endowment for Democracy, the International Republican Institute and Freedom House, among others. The objective of a "colored revolution" is to foment social unrest and use the protest movement to topple the existing government. The ultimate foreign policy goal is to instate a compliant pro-US government (or "puppet regime").... Very scary. Read more at link on the recent history of infiltration of social movements and stay tuned for PART II of this article will examine the mainstay of the Occupy Wall Street movement, including the role of NGO organizers. One need only to turn on any corporate media outlet to hear how OWS is being attacked or compromised. CASE IN POINT: The unflappable David Brooks who thinks all this is just peachy and gloats in the NYT how common folk are vermin. We let Charlie Pierce translate in David Brooks Does Not Get the Moral Norm of Being Broke It's Tuesday, and David Brooks is happy — nay, ecstatic — that all of you out there are using your encroaching poverty to rediscover your moral compass. He calls it — and I am not kidding here — The Great Restoration, and he's awfully proud of each and every one of you peasants, especially you folks who are hanging on every word of the Amanda Knox story and paying no attention at all to those bongo-drummers out in the street. ... People are broke because the end product of 30 years of economic theorizing and political action that you supported has resulted in a shattered middle-class. People are broke because the Wall Street casino that your politics created and celebrated and enabled finally broke the entire country and took the rest of us down with it. People are broke because you and the rest of your "conservative" pals latched onto a crackpot scheme called supply-side economics, married it to a deregulatory frenzy and free trade, and then pitched it to the Bobos as economic liberty. You got rich. You got important. Now people are not using their credit cards because they can't afford to buy the overpriced, Chinese-made crap that you once proposed as the new staple of American society. That is not a conscious mass moral choice. You've got to be on mushrooms to believe that. .... Unfortunately, and I hate to keep bringing this up, Dave, but 30 years of dumb Republican economics and even dumber Republican politics, both of which you made your bones celebrating, have sort of made that impossible. (A couple of decades of bipartisan "free-trade" agreements haven't helped, either.) Who was it that was cheering on "Free Agent Nation"? It was the politicians and the pundits who were declaring the golden age of the global economy, in which we'd all have two or three jobs before we retired, fat and happy, on the 401k's that the miracle of Wall Street by then would have inflated beyond our wildest dreams. Anyone who meekly suggested that, maybe, he'd like to put in 20 years at his job and collect a pension at the end of it that he could live on, was dismissed as a whiny relic of a past age, or as a state employee. And, in any case, part of the miracle of Wall Street was devising new and complicated financial instruments by which private pension plans could be pillaged for private profit. If David Brooks was concerned about this prior to 2008, when the people who go to dinner with him and who pay his honoraria nearly blew up the world, he kept devilishly quiet about it. What American capitalism knows about "moral norms" is that they are for other people. The people who did all the real damage are not in any way interested in "repairing the economic moral fabric" that "is the essential national task right now." They are interested in keeping the money they stole and in stealing as much more of it as they can. If you think VOTING will change things then hold the phone! The Nation's Ari Berman warns GOP Voting Laws Could Swing the 2012 Election Now, thanks to a new report from the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU, we have the best estimate yet for just how many voters will be impacted: “these new laws could make it significantly harder for more than five million eligible voters to cast ballots in 2012,” the report states (emphasis added). According to the report, “states that have already cut back on voting rights will provide 171 electoral votes in 2012–63 percent of the 270 needed to win the presidency.” It just so happens that of the twelve most competitive swing states in the country, “five [Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Nevada and Ohio] have already cut back on voting rights.” The Brennan Center notes that “these new restrictions fall most heavily on young, minority and low-income voters, as well as on voters with disabilities”—in other words, those most likely to vote against the GOP. Here’s how the Brennan Center calculated the number of voters adversely impacted by the new laws: [......] It’s important to put these numbers in perspective. ... So essentially, based on a handful of suspicious incidents, 5 million eligible voters could be disenfranchised in 2012. Keep reading Ari Berman! Can you say HAND COUNTED PAPER BALLOTS at the PRECINCT LEVEL? Ask yourself, WHY do REPUBLICANS ALWAYS RESTRICT avenues to voting?

CHANGE.ORG The First Cause: A Plan to Claim Food As Food We're losing the right to manage our own health. Even the right to choose our food is being stolen. We can stop it, but only by ending the basis on which it's being done—not by addressing each action. A new website has been set up to allow people to post responses from politicians, along with their own articles: Free Choice - Health Defining food as food is not the only issue that must be tackled, but it's a key one. As it gets rolling, we'll start others. We are literally in a battle for our lives!

CAMPAIGN FOR AMERICA'S FUTURE American Majority Rejects Washington Austerity Consensus – And We Demand Media Coverage by Roger Hickey, President, Campaign for America's Future: No more silent majority. The Campaign for America’s Future is joining with the Center for Economic and Policy Research (whose Co-Director, Dean Baker blogs regularly about economic bias in the media) and with FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) to monitor the media’s coverage and representation of the American Majority views as they go into covering the big deficit fight. But we want to enlist YOU too. Send us accounts of unbalanced coverage in the national media and in your local newspapers and television. Call up reporters, editors, assignment people and tell them when they are under-representing the views of the American Majority. We should have at least half the experts, pundits, quotes and real people represented in their coverage. In a debate as important as the one we are going into, we can’t allow the media to ignore the American Majority. Much more at www.ourfuture.org

Pepe Escobar October 19, 2011: Pepe Escobar, journalist and author of Obama Does Globalistan, discusses his article “ Obama, the king of Africa” about the US military commitment in Uganda and surrounding countries, supposedly to fight the Lord’s Resistance Army; the terrible human rights record of Uganda’s government (even worse than the LRA); the strange African brew of neo-colonialism, tinpot dictators, pipeline routes and JSOC outposts; the great game of mineral and energy extraction playing out between countries like China and South Korea who actually produce things, and the US that wants to spoil it for everyone; the Heritage Oil company’s remarkable ability to capitalize on US military interventions in oil rich countries, and get oil contracts before anyone else; ample opportunities for humanitarian interventions in the DRC (Congo); and the version 1.3 US proxy war with Somalia, this time with Kenyan forces.
Grant F. Smith October 20, 2011: Grant F. Smith, director of the Institute for Research: Middle Eastern Policy in Washington, D.C., discusses his article “Americans Pay Dearly to Maintain Israel’s Nuclear Secrets;” the Army Corps of Engineers’ $170 million cleanup project at NUMEC, a Pennsylvania nuclear facility that diverted uranium to Israel in the 1960s; why the CIA still won’t release documents on NUMEC (and the agency knows plenty about it), even to aid the cleanup effort; the juvenile stupidity of “strategic ambiguity,” where government officials and the US media feign ignorance or willfully ignore anything about Israel’s nuclear program; and how NUMEC fits the profile of a long list of Israeli front companies that smuggled US military assets and nuclear materials.
Patrick Cockburn October 21, 2011: Patrick Cockburn, Middle East correspondent for The Independent, discusses Moammar Gadhafi’s death and NATO’s “mission accomplished” in Libya; why the rebel factions will have to find a new cause to rally around, or else face divisions and infighting; why the Arab spring is a genuine grassroots movement, not a CIA-engineered series of color coded revolutions; and having to rely on human rights NGOs for reports critical of Libya’s NTC, since the media doesn’t do its own investigations or publicize information contrary to US government aims (even Al Jazeera is a rebel cheerleader).
