ALL LINKS OPEN A NEW WINDOW!!! Click on anything below and be INSTANTLY SMARTER! The Scoville Units We go back to last week's This Anampout where Paul Krugman let 'em have it! RAWSTORY Krugman: ‘Only fools and clowns’ believe Republican ideology “I have a structural hypothesis here,” Krugman told ABC’s Christiane Amanpour Sunday. “You have a Republican ideology, which Mitt Romney obviously doesn’t believe in. He just oozes insincerity, that’s just so obvious. But all of the others are fools and clowns. And there is a question here, my hypothesis is that maybe this is an ideology that only fools and clowns can believe in. And that’s the Republican problem.” Haha! DN!'s co-host Juan Gonzales gets interviewed on NPR's "Tell Me More" Racist History Of American News Media? Joining us now are the authors of the book "News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media." Juan Gonzalez is the co-host of the TV and radio news show, "Democracy Now." Joseph Torres is the senior advisor for government and external affairs at the national media reform group, the Free Press. Good item! See this interview on a new documentary about Gene Sharp on PRI's The World radio show ‘How To Start A Revolution’ Academic and author Gene Sharp has devoted his life to the study and promotion of non-violent action in conflicts. And he is the subject of a new documentary called “How to Start a Revolution”. Marco Werman speaks with the film’s director, Ruaridh Arrow. Get Gene Sharp's book "From Dictatorship to Democracy"! Seymour Hersh posts at his New Yorker blog Iran and the I.A.E.A. But how definitive, or transformative, were the findings? The I.A.E.A. said it had continued in recent years “to receive, collect and evaluate information relevant to possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program” and, as a result, it has been able “to refine its analysis.” The net effect has been to create “more concern.” But Robert Kelley, a retired I.A.E.A. director and nuclear engineer who previously spent more than thirty years with the Department of Energy’s nuclear-weapons program, told me that he could find very little new information in the I.A.E.A. report. He noted that hundreds of pages of material appears to come from a single source: a laptop computer, allegedly supplied to the I.A.E.A. by a Western intelligence agency, whose provenance could not be established. Those materials, and others, “were old news,” Kelley said, and known to many journalists. “I wonder why this same stuff is now considered ‘new information’ by the same reporters.” ... Greg Thielmann, a former State Department and Senate Intelligence Committee analyst who was one of the authors of the A.C.A. assessment, told me, “There is troubling evidence suggesting that studies are still going on, but there is nothing that indicates that Iran is really building a bomb.” He added, “Those who want to drum up support for a bombing attack on Iran sort of aggressively misrepresented the report.” ... The new report, therefore, leaves us where we’ve been since 2002, when George Bush declared Iran to be a member of the Axis of Evil—with lots of belligerent talk but no definitive evidence of a nuclear-weapons program. In an interview with Amy Goodman (video below) Hersh exclaims, "But there’s an element rationality in the Israeli intelligence community that’s not being expressed by the political leadership. It’s the same madness we have here. There’s an element of rationality in our intelligence community which says, in '07, and it has said it again last year, they don't have the bomb. They’re not making it. It’s at NIE, 16 agencies agreed, 16 to nothing, in an internal vote, before that—they did an update in 2011 on the '07 study and came to the same place. It's just not there. That doesn’t mean they don’t have dreams. It doesn’t mean scientists don’t do computer studies. It doesn’t mean that physicists at the University of Tehran don’t do what physicists like to do, write papers and do studies. But there’s just no evidence of any systematic effort to go from enriching uranium to making a bomb. ... It’s not a scientific study, Amy. It’s a political document. And it’s a political document in which he’s playing our game. And it’s the same game the Israelis are picking up on, and those who don’t like Iran." DAI-ICHI FUKUSHIMA UPDATE: From Mochizuki posting on fukushima-diary.com Architect of Reactor 3 warns of massive hydrovolcanic explosion Architect of Fukushima Daiichi Reactor 3, Uehara Haruo, the former president of Saga University had an interview on 11/17/2011. In this interview, he admitted Tepco’s explanation does not make sense, and that the China syndrome is inevitable. He stated that considering 8 months have passed since 311 without any improvement, it is inevitable that melted fuel went out of the container vessel and sank underground, which is called China syndrome. He added, if fuel has reaches a underground water vein, it will cause contamination of underground water, soil contamination and sea contamination. Moreover, if the underground water vein keeps being heated for long time, a massive hydrovolcanic explosion will be caused. He also warned radioactive debris is spreading in Pacific Ocean. Tons of the debris has reached the Marshall Islands as of 11/15/2011. (SOURCE) Commenter CaptD says:

Nuclear Madness has now hit NASA. Karl Grossman reports at opednews.com Space Launch Involving Plutonium Planned For Coming Weeks If there's an accident resulting in plutonium fallout which occurs above that and before the rocket breaks through Earth's gravitational field, people could be affected "anywhere between 28-degrees north and 28-degrees south latitude," says the EIS. That's a band around the mid-section of the Earth which includes much of South America, Africa and Australia. The EIS says the cost of decontamination of areas affected by the plutonium would be $267 million for each square mile of farmland, $478 million for each square mile of forests and $1.5 billion for each square mile of "mixed-use urban areas." The launch went off on Saturday without a hitch - THIS TIME. Next the Examiner's Michael Stone reports Anonymous hacks cops coordinating Occupy evictions - PERF goes down Sunday, Anonymous hacktivists assaulted PERF because of their alleged involvement in coordinating police crackdowns on Occupy protests across the country. Anonymous hacktivists assaulted PERF, the Police Executive Research Forum, by taking down their website and releasing the private information of Sherwin B. "Chuck" Wexler - Executive Director at PERF. PERF is a private but extremely influential national, non-governmental organization with close ties to law enforcement agencies across the country, as well as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The group allegedly orchestrated and coordinated the sometimes brutal police crack down on Occupy Wall Street, and other Occupy movements across the country. ... Yet after offering a flat denial of coordinating police activity, the announcement goes on to admit that “PERF conducted two conference calls” with metropolitan police chiefs across the country concerning police response to the Occupy movement. Rather than strengthening their denial, the admission that PERF was conducting conference calls only strengthens the case that PERF was involved in advising and coordinating the police crackdown on the Occupy movement. Ah yes Anonymous! Also note this item SOPA provokes Anonymous: Hacktivists threaten U.S. Congress and read their statement then sign the STOP SOPA petition below in BTV Action! Karen Dolan at commondreams exclaims Thank you “Super Committee!” You Failed, Now The Rest Of Us Can Succeed Thank you to Super-Committee Republicans who remained intransigent in their insistence of governing by and for the 1%, protecting their self-interest and the interests of the Super-Rich and Wall Street Bankers. Thank you to the Super-Committee Democrats who, though they revealed their willingness, if reluctant, to do the same by putting drastic cuts to vital domestic and earned benefits programs on the table next to revenue-raisers, stood up against a bad deal. The Democrats on the Super-Committee were responsive to the 99% in the end. The undemocratic, appointed Joint Select committee of six Democrats and six Republicans, the “Super-Committee,” failed to reach an agreement that would have unnecessarily imposed untold hardship on the vast majority of those of us already struggling in a bad economy. If this inability to reach a terrible deal is “failure”, can you imagine what “success,” defined by this crowd would have looked like? Here’s what success should look like, and thanks to the Super-Committee fail, we might just have the time and political space to achieve some of it: My colleagues at the Institute for Policy Studies have a newly released Report: America Is Not Broke: How to Fix the Crisis While Making the Country More Equitable, Green, and Secure. The report asserts that the current economic crisis presents us all with the opportunity and challenge to use our nation’s vast wealth to create a sustainable economy which functions well for all of us. The Institute for Policy Studies comes up with Seven times the total savings that the Super-Committee was charged with finding. Not only would this be success in correcting national priorities and positively affecting the long-term debt, these tax and spending reforms would create a society that works for 99% of us. If we had the political will to actually achieve success, we could achieve at least $824 billion per year by doing the following: Read on! Unfortunately the U.S. Congress only has the political will for the 1%, sadly. Now read Prof. Michael Hudson's Reforming the U.S. Financial and Tax System - Restore America’s past prosperity and rescue the future from the financial grabbers at globalresearch.ca On November 3, 2011, Alan Minsky interviewed Economic Professor and Global Research author Michael Hudson on KPFK’s program, “Building a Powerful Movement in the United States” in preparation for an Occupy L.A. teach-in. To clarify my points I have edited and expanded my answers from the interview transcript. A small snip: The Bush-Obama administration has promoted “neoliberal” tax and financial policies that have reversed a century of Progressive Era reforms. The past 30 years have suffered a radical transformation of tax policy and financial policy. So it takes an equally deep response to undo their distortions and put the American economy back on track. The guiding idea is simply to restore normalcy. The Progressive Era that emerged from classical economics understood the economic benefits of taxing unearned wealth (“rent extraction”) at the top of the economic pyramid, provide basic infrastructure services at cost rather than creating fiefdoms for privatizers to install tollbooths and make their gains tax-exempt. Radical neoliberalism has reversed this. It has vastly multiplied the debts owed by the bottom 99% to the top 1%. This is leading to debt peonage and what really is neo-feudalism. We are seeing a kind of financial warfare that is as grabbing as the old-style military conquests. The aim is the same: the land, basic infrastructure, and use of the government to extract tribute. A financial Clean Slate To restore the kind of normalcy that made America rich, most important long-term policy would be to recognize what is going to be inevitable for every economy. Debts need to be written down – and the politically easiest way to cut through the tangle is to write them off altogether. That would free the bottom 99% from their debt bondage to the top 1%. It would be a Clean Slate, starting over – and trying to do things right this time around. The creditors have not used the banking system to make America more productive and richer. They have used it as a vehicle to reduce the population to debt serfdom. A debt write-down sounds radical and unworkable, but it’s been done since World War II with great success. It is the program the Allies carried out in the German economy in that country’s 1947 currency reform. This was the policy that created Germany’s Economic Miracle. And America could experience a similar miracle. Much more at link! TomDispatch associate editor/Mother Jones reporter Andy Kroll Tomgram: Andy Kroll, Occupy Wall Street's Political Victory in Ohio Tom explains Twelve hours after Mayor Bloomberg’s cops evicted the Occupy Wall Street encampment from Zuccotti Park, the space had been scrubbed down and repopulated with police and private-security types, up to 150 of them. In essence, since September there had been two occupations in the Wall Street area and the second of them, the massive one the police were running, had now quite literally replaced the first. Odder yet, by mid-afternoon the police, barricaded in the park, were ringed by the returning protesters, awaiting a judge’s decision on whether they could again set up camp. It was as if in a single night the situation had somehow been turned inside out. As Occupy Wall Street's website wryly put it: “NYPD Occupying Liberty Square; Demands Unclear.” ... To catch Timothy MacBain's latest Tomcast audio interview in which Kroll discusses Occupy Wall Street's unlikely first political victory click here, or download it to your iPod here. How the 99% Won in the Fight for Worker Rights - The Unsung Victors in the Hottest Election of 2011 No headlines announced it. No TV pundits called it. But on the evening of November 8th, Occupy Wall Street, the populist uprising built on economic justice and corruption-free politics that’s spread like a lit match hitting a trail of gasoline, notched its first major political victory, and in the unlikeliest of places: Ohio. ... I spent a week in Ohio in early November interviewing dozens of people and reporting on the run-up to the SB 5 referendum. I visited heavily Democratic and Republican parts of the state, talking to liberals and conservatives, union leaders and activists. What struck me was how dramatically the debate had shifted in Ohio thanks in large part to the energy generated by Occupy Wall Street. It was as if a great tide had lifted the pro-repeal forces in a way you only fully grasped if you were there. Organizers and volunteers had a spring in their step that hadn’t been evident in Wisconsin this summer during the recall elections of nine state senators targeted for their actions during the fight over Governor Scott Walker’s own anti-union law. Nearly everywhere I went in Ohio, people could be counted on to mention two things: the 99% -- that is, the gap between the rich and poor -- and the importance of protecting the rights of the cops and firefighters targeted by Kasich's law. And not just voters or local activists either. I heard it from union leaders as well. .... In the end, a stunning 2.14 million Ohioans voted to repeal SB 5 and only 1.35 million to keep it, a 61% to 39% margin. There were repeal majorities in 82 of Ohio's 88 counties, support that cut across age, class, race, and political ideologies. ... Kasich's anti-union law might still be on the books if not for the force of OWS. And if the Occupy movement survives Mayor Bloomberg's eviction order and the winter season, if it regroups and adapts to life beyond Zuccotti Park, you can bet it will notch more political victories in 2012. Our go-to guy in Wisconsin John Nicols of The Nation notes As Wisconsin Governor's Poll Numbers Tank, GOP Moves to 'Rig' Recall Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s support has collapsed, according to a new poll that shows that 58 percent of voters favor recalling the Republican whose anti-labor initiatives provoked the mass demonstrations that anticipated the Occupy Wall Street movement. .... The numbers, revealed in a poll by the state’s premier survey group and parallel to figures seen in some internal polls, explain why Walker has responded so aggressively to the threat posed by a recall drive, which launched Tuesday. In the latest of a series of desperate moves by Walker and his backers, Republican legislator moved Tuesday to give the embattled governor veto power over decisions about the recall election he is likely to face next spring. The Republican-led Joint Committee for Review of Administrative Rules has ordered the state’s Government Accountability Board—an independent agency that oversees elections in Wisconsin—to submit decisions regarding key voting-rights issues to a formal rule-making process that gives Governor Walker and Republican legislative leaders the ability to reject rule changes made by the GAB. ... The governor has reason to be concerned for his political future. Since the drive to force Walker to face a new election was launched at 12:01 am Tuesday, tens of thousands of Wisconsinites have signed petitions circulated by backers of the recall effort. From the urban neighborhoods of Milwaukee, where union members angered by the governor’s attacks on collective-bargaining rights are knocking doors, to country roads, where rural activists have set up roadside stands to gather signatures, the recall movement clearly has gained traction. That may explain why Walker’s legislative allies are moving to give the governor the authority to erect roadblocks to the recall. In Wisconsin as they begin gathering signatures for the recall of Scott Walker the Caledonia Patch's Dennis Lockwood reports Pro-Recall Group Outs Facebook Page That Boasts About Destroying Signatures Wisconsin recall supporters outed an anonymous Facebook group called Operation Burn Notice on Tuesday as a coordinated effort designed to destroy petitions signed to force Gov. Scott Walker and other Wisconsin Republicans out of office. Scot Ross, executive director of One Wisconsin Now, denounced the anonymous group, in a Madison press conference. "We cannot allow democracy to be threatened by those who would illegally destroy recall petitions with valid signatures on them," Ross said. "We intend to keep the public informed about its rights during the signature gathering process and alert those who would engage in illegal conduct that they do so at their own peril." And BradBlog notes 'RECALL WALKER' DEATH THREATS Supporters of WI's anti-union Governor reportedly making late-night calls to intimidate petition gatherers. And One Wisconsin Now Establishes $10,000 Reward Fund to Combat Recall Petition Attacks Also at globalresearch Patrick Henningsen warns Here's the Risk: "Occupy" ends up doing the bidding of the global elite ...Although the global Occupy movement has branched out in an open-source way, many of its participants and spectators might be completely unaware of who actually launched it. Upon investigation, what one finds is a daisy chain of non-profit foundations, all tied together by hundreds of millions per year in operational funding. The original call for Occupy Wall Street came from non-profit international media foundation Adbusters. Like many non-profits, Adbusters receives its funding and operating capital from other behind-the-scenes organisations. According to research conducted by watchdog Activistcash, Adbusters takes a significant portion of its money from the Tides Foundation, an organisation partnered with one of Wall Street billionaire oligarch George Soros's foundations, the Open Society Institute. ... Freedom House is another of Soros's Open Society partners. It supports the Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (Canvas), an organisation started by Serbians Ivan Marovic and Srdja Popovic. After playing a pivotal role in the CIA-backed deposing of Serbia's Slobodan Milosevic, the western media hailed Marovic as a democratic genius, but it came out later that his programme came out of an elite Boston thinktank's "regime change" manual, From Dictatorship to Democracy, written by Harvard professor Gene Sharp. Sharp's book is a bible of the colour revolutions – a "regime change for dummies". His Albert Einstein Institution has received funds from the National Endowment for Democracy and the Open Society Foundations, and his work serves as a template for western-backed opposition leaders in soft coups all around the world. ... When the dust settles and it's all said and done, millions of Occupy participants may very well be given a sober lesson under the heading of "controlled opposition". In the end, the Occupy movement could easily end up doing the bidding of the very elite globalist powers that they were demonstrating against to begin with. To avoid such an outcome, it's important for a movement to have a good knowledge of history and the levers of power in the 21st century. Glenn Greenwald at Salon explains Here’s what attempted co-option of OWS looks like ... Having SEIU officials — fresh off endorsing the Obama re-election campaign — shape, fund, dictate and decree an anti-GOP, pro-Obama march is about as antithetical as one can imagine to what the Occupy movement has been. And pretending that the ongoing protests are grounded in the belief that the GOP is the party of the rich while the Democrats are the party of the working class is likely to fool just about nobody other than those fooled by that already. The strength and genius of OWS has been its steadfast refusal to (a) fall into the trap that ensnared the Tea Party of being exploited as a partisan tool and (b) integrate itself into the very political institutions which it’s scorning and protesting. As I noted several weeks ago, WH-aligned groups such as the Center for American Progress have made explicitly clear that they are going to try to convert OWS into a vote-producing arm for the Obama 2012 campaign, and that’s what “Occupy Congress” is designed to achieve. I believed then and — having spent the last few weeks talking with many OWS protesters around the country — believe even more so now that these efforts will inevitably fail: those who have animated the Occupy movement are not motivated by partisan allegiance or an overarching desire to devote themselves to one of the two parties. In fact, one of the original Occupy groups — as opposed to partisan organizations swooping in to exploit it — has announced its own D.C. occupation to, in part, “demonstrate the failure of the Democrats and Republicans in Congress to represent the views of the majority of people.” ... Even if you believe the U.S. has some sort of vibrant democracy — rather than a democracy-immune oligarchy — not all change needs to come exclusively from voting and electoral politics. Citizen movements can change the political culture in ways other than working within that pre-established electoral system; indeed, when that system becomes fundamentally corrupted, working outside of it is the only means of effectuating real change. Here’s how former IMF Chief Economist Simon Johnson put it in The Atlantic when equating the contemporary United States to the corrupted “emerging market” oligarchies which caused past financial crises on which he worked:
Squeezing the oligarchs, though, is seldom the strategy of choice among emerging-market governments. Quite the contrary: at the outset of the crisis, the oligarchs are usually among the first to get extra help from the government, such as preferential access to foreign currency, or maybe a nice tax break, or—here’s a classic Kremlin bailout technique—the assumption of private debt obligations by the government. Under duress, generosity toward old friends takes many innovative forms. Meanwhile, needing to squeeze someone, most emerging-market governments look first to ordinary working folk—at least until the riots grow too large.
That last phrase is the essence of why I hope OWS, at least for now, remains a movement that refuses to reduce itself into garden-variety electoral politics. What is missing from America is a healthy fear in the hearts and minds of the most powerful political and financial factions of the consequences of their continued pilfering, corporatism, and corrupt crony capitalism, and only this sort of movement — untethered from the pacifying rules of our political and media institutions — can re-impose that healthy fear.
Following up on last week's stunner in News from Underground Mark Crispin Miller asks Did feds help plan the raids on OWS? National Lawyers Guild files FOIA requests in search of evidence According to a statement by the NLG, each of the FOIA requests states, “This request specifically encompasses disclosure of any documents or information pertaining to federal coordination of, or advice or consultation regarding, the police response to the Occupy movement, protests or encampments.” YES! Also see this entry Calling all American professors! Our colleges and universities must be declared “safe protest zones”! (PETITION) from Cory Robin. And here's something you absolutely will not see or hear in the corporate press: Richard Charnin author of the preeminent study on election fraud Proving Election Fraud: Phantom Voters, Uncounted Votes, and the National Exit Poll revisits the 2000 election in this shocker Gore won by 6 MILLION votes—a “mini-landslide”—in 2000 Michael Moore asks at truthout Where Does Occupy Wall Street Go From Here? "This past weekend I participated in a four-hour meeting of Occupy Wall Street activists whose job it is to come up with the vision and goals of the movement. It was attended by 40+ people and the discussion was both inspiring and invigorating. Here is what we ended up proposing as the movement's "vision statement" to the General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street." Good ideas at link! And here's a real shocker from Jason Leopold at truthout FBI Claims It Does Not Have Any Documents on Occupy Wall Street ...the FBI has long had a deplorable record when it comes to conducting a thorough search of its records for documents responsive to FOIA requests. Indeed, a 2009 study conducted by George Washington University's National Security Archive (NSA), which publishes declassified documents and files numerous FOIA requests, noted that "during fiscal year 2008, the FBI gave 'no records' responses to 57% of the requests it processed, more than any other major agency." “The FBI knowingly uses a search process that doesn’t find relevant records,” Archive director Tom Blanton said at the time. ... Still, despite those statistics (we were unable to obtain updated figures), Truthout determined that our FOIA request to the FBI fell short. ... To be safe, Truthout has since filed a new set of FOIA requests for documents pertaining to Occupy Wall Street with FBI field offices around the country and we have formally requested the agency conduct a "broader search" of its records to locate responsive documents. .... But the agency, in a carefully worded statement issued last week to the Huffington Post, flatly denied reports that it has been working with local law enforcement in response to Occupy Wall Street. "Recent published blogs and news stories have reported the FBI has coordinated with local police departments on strategy and tactics to be employed in addressing Occupy Wall Street protestors," the FBI said. "These reports are false. At no time has the FBI engaged with local police in this capacity." Yes, hard to believe, isn't it? It seems the TEAR GAS being used in Egypt is manufactured in Jamestown PA. Joshua Hersh at HuffPo/AOL Egypt: American Tear Gas, Policy Loom Over Tahrir Square "Where are they from, America?" people asked, already knowing the answer. "Yes, America," the man replied furiously. The crowd murmured with unsurprised disdain. Like many gas canisters in Tahrir, one of his was marked with blue letters that read "Made in USA" and bore the name of the company that produced it: Combined Tactical Systems, in Jamestown, PA. ... The U.S. State Department denied on Tuesday that the gas was purchased with American "security assistance funds," but did acknowledge that direct sales between the government and American companies have been authorized in the past. The use of American-made tear gas has only compounded the sense among many of Tahrir's most ardent protesters that the United States plays a malicious role in Egyptian politics, seeking to reinforce the status quo -- in this case, the military, which they have good relations with -- rather that supporting the aspirations of demonstrators. Scientific American guest blogger Deborah Blum checks the Scoville Chart in About Pepper Spray The scale – as you can see on the widely used chart to the left – puts sweet bell peppers at the zero mark and the blistering habanero at up to 350,000 Scoville Units. ...As the chart makes clear, commercial grade pepper spray leaves even the most painful of natural peppers (the Himalayan ghost pepper) far behind. It’s listed at between 2 million and 5.3 million Scoville units. The lower number refers to the kind of pepper spray that you and I might be able to purchase for self-protective uses. And the higher number? It’s the kind of spray that police use, the super-high dose given in the orange-colored spray used at UC-Davis. The reason pepper-spray ends up on the Scoville chart is that – you probably guessed this - it’s literally derived from pepper chemistry, the compounds that make habaneros so much more formidable than the comparatively wimpy bells. Those compounds are called capsaicins and – in fact – pepper spray is more formally called Oleoresin Capsicum or OC Spray. But we’ve taken to calling it pepper spray, I think, because that makes it sound so much more benign than it really is, like something just a grade or so above what we might mix up in a home kitchen. The description hints maybe at that eye-stinging effect that the cook occasionally experiences when making something like a jalapeno-based salsa, a little burn, nothing too serious. Until you look it up on the Scoville scale and remember, as toxicologists love to point out, that the dose makes the poison. That we’re not talking about cookery but a potent blast of chemistry. So that if OC spray is the U.S. police response of choice – and certainly, it’s been used with dismaying enthusiasm during the Occupy protests nationwide, as documented in this excellent Atlantic roundup - it may be time to demand a more serious look at the risks involved. My own purpose here is to focus on the dangers of a high level of capsaicin exposure. And we hope The Occupiers are able to obtain legal recourse for being attacked with these potentially deadly chemicals. Our last word goes to Naomi Wolf @ guardian.co.uk who exposes The shocking truth about the crackdown on Occupy The violent police assaults across the US are no coincidence. Occupy has touched the third rail of our political class's venality I noticed that rightwing pundits and politicians on the TV shows on which I was appearing were all on-message against OWS. Journalist Chris Hayes reported on a leaked memo that revealed lobbyists vying for an $850,000 contract to smear Occupy. Message coordination of this kind is impossible without a full-court press at the top. This was clearly not simply a case of a freaked-out mayors', city-by-city municipal overreaction against mess in the parks and cranky campers. As the puzzle pieces fit together, they began to show coordination against OWS at the highest national levels. Why this massive mobilisation against these not-yet-fully-articulated, unarmed, inchoate people? After all, protesters against the war in Iraq, Tea Party rallies and others have all proceeded without this coordinated crackdown. Is it really the camping? As I write, two hundred young people, with sleeping bags, suitcases and even folding chairs, are still camping out all night and day outside of NBC on public sidewalks – under the benevolent eye of an NYPD cop – awaiting Saturday Night Live tickets, so surely the camping is not the issue. I was still deeply puzzled as to why OWS, this hapless, hopeful band, would call out a violent federal response. That is, until I found out what it was that OWS actually wanted. ... No 3 was the most clarifying: draft laws against the little-known loophole that currently allows members of Congress to pass legislation affecting Delaware-based corporations in which they themselves are investors. When I saw this list – and especially the last agenda item – the scales fell from my eyes. Of course, these unarmed people would be having the shit kicked out of them. ... DHS is answerable up a chain of command: first, to New York Representative Peter King, head of the House homeland security subcommittee, who naturally is influenced by his fellow congressmen and women's wishes and interests. And the DHS answers directly, above King, to the president (who was conveniently in Australia at the time). In other words, for the DHS to be on a call with mayors, the logic of its chain of command and accountability implies that congressional overseers, with the blessing of the White House, told the DHS to authorise mayors to order their police forces – pumped up with millions of dollars of hardware and training from the DHS – to make war on peaceful citizens. But wait: why on earth would Congress advise violent militarised reactions against its own peaceful constituents? ... Since Occupy is heavily surveilled and infiltrated, it is likely that the DHS and police informers are aware, before Occupy itself is, what its emerging agenda is going to look like. If legislating away lobbyists' privileges to earn boundless fees once they are close to the legislative process, reforming the banks so they can't suck money out of fake derivatives products, and, most critically, opening the books on a system that allowed members of Congress to profit personally – and immensely – from their own legislation, are two beats away from the grasp of an electorally organised Occupy movement … well, you will call out the troops on stopping that advance. So, when you connect the dots, properly understood, what happened this week is the first battle in a civil war; a civil war in which, for now, only one side is choosing violence. It is a battle in which members of Congress, with the collusion of the American president, sent violent, organised suppression against the people they are supposed to represent. Occupy has touched the third rail: personal congressional profits streams... Ya might want to rethink your Doomsday cupboard after reading that! Hope you enjoyed the nice long weekend and didn't get trampled or pepper-sprayed on Black Friday. The 1st Amendment is Our Permit WASHINGTON - October 14 - This is an emergency appeal. Spread it widely. Our permit to occupy is called “The First Amendment.” This morning, Occupy Wall Street protesters celebrated when New York authorities beat a last-minute retreat from clearing Liberty Plaza – as hundreds of labor and other activists rushed to defend the square. But at the same time this morning, dozens of state troopers in riot gear cleared out Occupy Denver protests. In cities across the country, Occupy protesters have faced police violence and arrests. Some occupations have been forcibly removed while others have stood their ground successfully. The authorities say we don’t have the proper permits to occupy public spaces. Our permit to occupy is The First Amendment. Quickly sign the following statement which will be delivered to mayors, police chiefs and major media across the country:
Our permit to occupy public squares and parks is in The First Amendment, which affirms “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” When people across the Middle East occupied public squares, leaders in Washington mostly cheered those protesters and warned Middle Eastern governments not to use force to clear them. Those other societies don’t have a First Amendment. Yet Washington affirmed the universal right to assembly and protest. We do have a First Amendment. The force being used to clear nonviolent protesters from public squares in our country is unacceptable. It must stop.
Action for a Progressive Future (the organization that runs RootsAction) is a nonprofit, progressive, public policy advocacy group that will engage citizens in the democratic process and help make sure legislators hear their voices.

October2011.org October 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions. Take this pledge at October2011.org
"I pledge that if any U.S. troops, contractors, or mercenaries remain in Afghanistan on Thursday, October 6, 2011, as that occupation goes into its 11th year, I will commit to being in Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., with others on that day or the days immediately following, for as long as I can, with the intention of making it our Tahrir Square, Cairo, our Madison, Wisconsin, where we will NONVIOLENTLY resist the corporate machine by occupying Freedom Plaza to demand that America's resources be invested in human needs and environmental protection instead of war and exploitation. We can do this together. We will be the beginning."

NET NEUTRALITY! SaveTheInternet.org SOPA If you've been living under an Internet-free rock the past couple of weeks, you might have managed to miss the steady drumbeat of opposition to HR 3261, the so-called Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Then again, if you've been living under an Internet-free rock, you've already had a preview of what we're facing if SOPA goes into effect. AmericanCensorship.org has pulled together an infographic that explains in very basic terms the services and sites that are at greatest risk from SOPA here: Infographic: Effects of the Internet Blacklist Bill (SOPA). More info at American Censorship Day READ Internet Censorship: Not Today, Not Tomorrow SIGN NOW! Internet censorship is coming to America. It’s in the form of a bill in Congress that gives corporations unprecedented power to blacklist websites at will. If passed, the “Stop Online Piracy Act,” or SOPA (HR 3261), could rip apart the open fabric of the Internet. People could see their websites disappear from the Internet for a “crime” as innocent as posting a video of themselves singing along to a favorite song. Sign this petition NOW! CAMPAIGN FOR AMERICA'S FUTURE American Majority Rejects Washington Austerity Consensus – And We Demand Media Coverage by Roger Hickey, President, Campaign for America's Future: No more silent majority. The Campaign for America’s Future is joining with the Center for Economic and Policy Research (whose Co-Director, Dean Baker blogs regularly about economic bias in the media) and with FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) to monitor the media’s coverage and representation of the American Majority views as they go into covering the big deficit fight. But we want to enlist YOU too. Send us accounts of unbalanced coverage in the national media and in your local newspapers and television. Call up reporters, editors, assignment people and tell them when they are under-representing the views of the American Majority. We should have at least half the experts, pundits, quotes and real people represented in their coverage. In a debate as important as the one we are going into, we can’t allow the media to ignore the American Majority. Much more at www.ourfuture.org

    • VIDEO! Papantonio: Places To Occupy Next When a small group of protestors began to Occupy Wall Street two months ago, no one could have imagined that the movement would have spread across the globe in just a month’s time. Instead of disappearing like the folks at Fox News had predicted, the movement is growing with each passing day, as more and more people are becoming fed up with the way corporate America has treated them. The big question now is, what is the next step? Mike Papantonio talks about that next step with investigative journalist Daniel Denvir.
    • VIDEO! Papantonio: Generational Income Gap Is Destroying Young People Financially Unlike the “Don’t Tax Me” Tea Party, the members of the Occupy Movement tend to be young adults who are struggling to find work. And there’s a reason why this generation is becoming increasingly angry at corporate America. Studies show that young Americans are now falling way behind in income, while the older generations hold almost half of all the wealth in America. Mike Papantonio discusses the generational income gap with Alternet editor and senior writer, Josh Holland.

Glenn Greenwald November 20, 2011: Salon.com blogger Glenn Greenwald discusses how Gerald Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon cut the last vestiges of the rule of law in America; the “too big to jail” justice system where powerful people need not fear incarceration; turning the Nuremberg court’s opinion on “aggressive war” on its head, as the US continually attacks countries that don’t pose a threat and government officials never face war crimes tribunals; the world-record US prison population, comprised of drug offenders and regular people who can’t afford to replace their (usually incompetent) public defender; and how US presidents refrain from prosecuting previous administrations, with the expectation that their own crimes will also go unpunished.
Adam Morrow November 21, 2011: IPS News journalist Adam Morrow discusses the return of million-man protests in Tahrir Square on the eve of the first parliamentary election since Mubarak’s ouster; street skirmishes and dozens of casualties after the Egyptian military overreacted to demonstrations; fears that so-called “super constitutional principles” will keep Egypt a military dictatorship, no matter the outcome of elections; and how plans to open the Rafah border crossing with Gaza have been put on the back burner.
Seymour Hersh November 22, 2011: Seymour Hersh, award winning investigative reporter for The New Yorker magazine, discusses his article “Iran and the I.A.E.A.;” how extensive CIA/JSOC espionage (and perhaps assassination and sabotage) in Iran failed to find any evidence of a clandestine nuclear weapons program; why Iran’s interest in nukes prior to 2003 was to hedge against an Iraqi weapon; the new IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, who has no problem regurgitating old innuendo to make a case for war; and why the bluster coming out of Israel exists mostly at the top, since common sense attitudes about Iran are common in lower ranks of the military and Mossad.
Eric Margolis November 24, 2011: Eric Margolis, internationally syndicated columnist and author of War at the Top of the World and American Raj, discusses the mid-1980s declaration of Osama bin Laden’s mentor Abdullah Azzam that the mujahideen would go after US forces in Saudi Arabia after the Soviets were expelled from Afghanistan; taking a closer look at the “they hate us for our freedom” explanation of Islamic extremism; the angry know-nothing Republican presidential candidates (with two exceptions); and how the convergence of regional and world powers in Syria could lead to war with Iran.

They are as dead and useless to us as the water-soaked books, tents, sleeping bags, suitcases, food boxes and clothes that were tossed by sanitation workers Tuesday morning into garbage trucks in New York City. They have no ideas, no plans and no vision for the future." So begins Chris Hedges This Is What Revolution Looks Like on truthdig.com. Go read this NOW and come back....we'll wait..... LIBERTY PARK DESTRUCTION: Crooksandliars has this early report from Tuesday in their special Occupy America section: Court Orders Occupiers Must Be Allowed to Re-enter Zuccotti Park With Their Belongings by Diane Sweet Early Tuesday morning, Mayor 1 Percent himself was beginning an early morning press conference to defend the even earlier morning raid and destruction of the Occupy Wall Street encampment at Zuccotti Park, and then an early rising judge ordered that Bloomberg could not unilaterally usurp the Constitution. As NYC Mayor Michael Bloomber began his 8 a.m. press conference today, as he was explaining to everyone how "No right is absolute," he learned of a 6 a.m. ruling ordering that the protesters from Zuccotti Park be allowed to return along with their belongings. Via the National Lawyer's Guild NYC Chapter:
"New York, NY: At around 6 AM on November 15, 2011, attorneys associated with the New York City Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild working as the Liberty Park Legal Working Group obtained a temporary restraining order against the City of New York, various City agencies, and Brookfield properties directing that occupiers be allowed back on the premises with their belongings." ... "In the coming hours, days and weeks the LPLWG will pursue all legal options to enable the occupiers to continue to exercise their first amendment rights to speech and assembly for speech. Attorney Yetta Kurland, one of the attorneys from the LPLWG, said, “This is a victory for everyone who believes in the First Amendment. We will continue to fight for everyone’s right to continue the occupation.” In response to the injunction, Daniel Alterman, also an attorney with the LPLWG, stated that, “This is a victory for all Americans, for the constitution and for the 99%.” Gideon Oliver, another attorney with the LPLWG reacted by saying, “The LPLWG has been fighting to ensure their right to free speech from day one of the occupation. The occupiers right to free speech is based in our most core legal principles and we will be here till the end to fight for those rights.”
The order is available HERE (pdf).
  • Excelsior comments, "Interesting how he's so concerned with the health and safety of "our public" - except for the protesters. Because of course the protesters are not members of the public? How does that work, exactly?"
  • Emocrat counters, "Yes, police terror enhances the public health & safety. IOW, the beatings will continue until morale improves or something. Of course, every other mayor using state terror right now is saying exactly the same things, so it's definitely not coordinated! Apparently, the "public" is defined as the 1%. That leaves the 99 as what, exactly?"
Ah but the LPLWG victory was short-lived as Mayor 1 Percent got the judge changed and Occupiers were allowed back into Victory Park but no tents, sleeping bags and tarps. By evening NYPD had surrounded the park and set up check-points for entry, searching bags, etc. See Democracy NOW! below for some great coverage. When you watch DN!'s Tuesday coverage from Liberty Park host Amy Goodman picks up a book from the rubble (possibly from the destroyed OWS Library) and the book is? Aldous Huxley's BRAVE NEW WORLD! Let that sink in a minute. Then read Why the NYPD are kidnapping books by Laurie Penn at The New Statesman. At Mother Jones Occupy Wall Street Raided Monday night's police action at Zuccotti Park took place under something of a media blackout—no reporters were allowed near the scene. MoJo's Josh Harkinson and James West were there, and Josh eventually got into the park. Following is a roundup of the night's events based on Twitter updates from Josh, James, other journalists, and the Occupy livestream. . . . . and BradBlog adds NYPD Cop Threatens Mother Jones Reporter Josh Harkinson Inside Zuccotti Park with VIDEO! The Guardian's Suzanna Goldenberg interviewed Barbara Ehrenreich on the Occupy Movement Ehrenreich: Democratic establishment abandoned Occupy Wall Street and exclaimed "One of the appalling things here is that there are so many Democratic mayors involved in these crackdowns or in Bloomberg's case, someone who is seen as a liberal. And where in all this was Obama? Why couldn't he have picked up the phone at some point a couple of weeks ago and called the mayors of Portland and Oakland and said: 'go easy on these people. They represent the anger and aspirations of the majority'. Would that have been so difficult?" Well, apparently The Great Ozbama DID pick up the phone, but he didn't say to "go easy" on the OWS'ers. Rather, more like "Time to put the hammer down". On COUNTDOWN TUESDAY Occupy Wall Street: Michael Moore connects the federal government to encampment raids Keith and filmmaker and activist Michael Moore discuss the early-morning raid on New York’s Occupy Wall Street encampment in Zuccotti Park. Noting that the movement will be revitalized by the setback, Moore also stresses that the federal government has been involved with coordinating the strategy and tactics of the raids that took place across the country over the past 48 hours: “This is not some coincidence. This was planned and I think the question really has to be asked of the federal government and of the Obama administration. Why? Why? Why are you participating in this against a non-violent mass movement of people who are upset at what Wall Street and the banks have done to their lives?” Seems like Moore was on to something. In These Times Allison Kilkenny echoes Did Mayors, DHS Coordinate Occupy Attacks? When a series of crackdowns on the Occupy camps suddenly occurred in, more or less, the same week, many observers wondered if perhaps the attacks had been coordinated at a national level. Oakland Mayor Jean Quan confirmed that suspicion during an appearance on the BBC - excerpted on The Takeaway radio program - when she casually mentioned taking part in a conference call with the leaders of 18 US cities right before the raids. “I was recently on a conference call with 18 cities across the country who had the same situation," said Quan. It turns out one of the 18 leaders who sat in on the call was Portland Mayor Sam Adams. The calls, according to Adams, were organized "to share information about the occupying encampments around the country." He described the calls to the New York Times as "check-ins to share information and advice on how various cities were handling the demonstrations." In addition to conferring with their fellow mayors, it appears city leadership also received an assist from the Department of Homeland Security, according to journalist Rick Ellis at the Examiner. Ellis spoke with a Justice official, who claims each of the Occupy raid actions were coordinated with help from Homeland Security, the FBI, and other federal police agencies. ... Quan and Adams are the only mayors who have thus far admitted to the coordination, but if Quan's statement is accurate, there are many other city leaders who took part in the calls. Crackdowns in Salt Lake City, Albany, Denver, and elsewhere in the past few days suggest the synchronized assaults were planned to deal a swift, crushing blow to Occupy. It's unsurprising that such coordination would demand federal oversight, but it's also deeply disturbing that a federal agency may have participated in the plot, since the whole reason Occupy exists is to address the corruption of the government. It seems as though OWS has transitioned from the first and second parts of Gandhi's formula for peaceful revolution, and have now entered the third and last stage: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you…" have come and gone. .... Occupy is now firmly planted in the "then they fight you" phase where city leaders, through arbitrary application of laws, raids, and police brutality hope to crush the movement for good. It speaks to the effectiveness of the group that this last stage has taken not only a full-scale, nationwide coordination of 18 city leaders, but also allegedly federal oversight. Not bad for a group of a couple hundred kids who went to Zuccotti without so much as a vague plan in their back pockets. From the SNU Project a wrap of the Global Day of Action November 17: a day packed with worldwide action | ROARMAG with plenty of links from around the world! Eric Margolis outlines the latest "Bomb Iran" hysteria in OLD LIES IN NEW BOTTLES And so it has gone, a steady drumbeat of false claims. This war hysteria comes on the heels of US charges of an alleged Iranian plot to kill the Saudi ambassador in Washington, a claim laughed at by many Mideast experts. In fact, it’s possible the US FBI mixed up Iranians: the plot’s alleged mastermind may not have been a member of Iran’s elite military forces at all but of the violently anti-Tehran People’s Mujahidin, which Washington still calls a terrorist organization even though it is now in bed with the pro-Israel Republican hard right and Israel. The IAEA tried to buttress its shaky claims against Iran by insisting, “nine other nations came to the same conclusion about Tehran’s covert nuclear efforts.” We heard the same refrain from Washington over its false claims about Iraq’s non-existent weapons. In fact, thanks to routine intelligence sharing programs, faked documents about Iraq’s nuclear efforts were fed to other NATO members. Based on such forgeries, some of these nations concluded Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. The same process is now happening over Iran’s alleged weapons program. Washington has worked for the past 20 years to make the UN the “soft” arm of US foreign policy. The US is the UN’s biggest contributor; it pays 25.8% of the costs of the IAEA and has put its own men in positions of influence. Even so, the latest UN reports hedges conclusions with words like “suggests” and “appears.” If Iran is indeed trying to produce nuclear weapons – and it has good reasons for wanting them - why has it taken so long? Initial work began in the 1970’s under the Shah. Iran sought to buy nuclear technology from Pakistan twenty years ago. What’s so crazy about all this is that Israel has a very large arsenal of nuclear and bio-warfare weapons while Iran remains under UN nuclear inspection. The big nuclear powers – the US, Russia, China, Britain, France – are in violation of the 1995 UN nuclear non-proliferation treaty that mandated eliminating all nuclear weapons within five years. Talk about the nuclear pots calling the Iranian kettle black. And let's not forget Iran belongs to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty; Pakistan, India and Israel do not. This means that Iran is subject to IAEA inspections; Pakistan, India and Israel are not. Why is that? And didn't the IAEA tell the world IRAQ had NO Weapon of Mass Destruction and bu$h attacked IRAQ anyway? Hmmmmmmm. Listen to Scott Horton's interview with Eric Margolis October 31, 2011: Eric Margolis, internationally syndicated columnist and author of War at the Top of the World and American Raj, discusses how a Libyan-style regime change in Syria could give the neoconservatives a backdoor-to-war with Iran; talk of securing Netanyahu’s legacy through a Churchill-like “moment of greatness” where he attacks Iran and saves Israel from another holocaust; behind-the-scenes fighting by British and French special forces in Libya; why Turkey is harboring an anti-Syrian “army” of deserters; why Iraq will fall apart (even more) when the US completely withdraws; the former Pakistani cricket player leading protests against US influence; and why the Haqqani network is just the latest excuse for the failing war in Afghanistan. UK Daily Mail's TIM SHIPMAN and NICK PISA described Berlusconi's sacking this way: "EU power brokers, including Mr Sarkozy and Mrs Merkel, effectively engineered a coup against Mr Berlusconi in Italy and installed a technocratic government in Greece." Check out this interactive graph at BBC Eurozone debt web: Who owes what to whom? (h/t msgeaux) Amazing. Can you say "Jubilee"? With Berlusconi and Papandreou out of the way Our Man in Pipelineistan Pepe Escobar explains the entire Euro-mess in Politburo uber alles Ah, those good old Cold War/Soviet Union days when an army of Kremlinologists was hooked on every imperceptible move by an inscrutable politburo. Wait a minute. Who would have thought that two decades after the end of "real socialism" politburos would be back in fashion? China does it - see their nine-member standing committee, the holy of the holies inside their 25-member politburo. And proving once more Slavoj Zizek's thesis that the marriage of capitalism and democracy is over, "free" Europe also does it - with relish, even doubling down on China's notorious Gang of Four. Meet the Gang of Eight The eurozone is now in fact run by an eight-member politburo. What a sterling job. This Gang of Eight is accountable to no one, except mythical Zeus with his trademark thunderbolts. In the liquid modernity era, Zeus goes by the name of the God of the Market. The only thing that matters to the Gang of Eight is what financial markets - run by the God - want; mere mortals, as in European voters, are at best a nuisance. Ergo, eurozone national governments are totally meaningless. The shots are called by a troika formed by the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Commission (EC) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). All of them gloriously unelected. Europe's politburo goes by the innocent acronym GdF, French for Groupe de Francfort (Frankfurt Group), established last month. They met no less than four times during the recent, spectacularly failed Group of 20 debt festival in Cannes. Here's the full technocratic list - with a few politicians thrown in. ..... No one even needs to pry open Brussels corridors or sit with the odd functionary over steak frites and Bordeaux to know how much the EU hates democracy. For instance, no one knows how the (unelected) governing council of the all-powerful ECB votes, because everything they do is secret. Hardcore neo-liberalism, as imposed by the Gang of Eight, is like a Mafia treatment; first they go for your knees - amputating social rights. Then they go for your throat - amputating political rights. For the "cattle" that will carry the burden of endless austerity - European voters - there's not much left except the odd general strike or screaming their lungs out in the streets. ... The point is the excesses of casino capitalism - financial capital operating in total deregulation. Thus the pre-eminence of this glossy/shady character - the liquid modernity technocrat - averse to democracy yet legitimate enough to call for popular repression, all in the name of satisfying the Almighty financial God. There's no (political) difference in conducting regime change with "humanitarian" bombing or through the God of the Market's thunderbolts. Go check out the whole thing including Pepe's "Gang of Eight" rundown of the actors involved in the Euro/IMF take-down going on EXACTLY as described in Naomi Klien's SHOCK DOCTRINE. We have TWO ITEMS about Penn State:
  • TruthOut posts Henry A. Giroux: Penn State Crisis - the Failure of the University (Radio Interview) “There is a lot of talk about the culture of silence as if it is simply an offshoot of the need to protect the wealth and power of those in control of Penn State’s football empire, but the fact of the matter is the real issue is that higher education has been corrupted by big money, big sports, corporate power, and the search for profits for some time, except that in the age of unabashed free market fundamentalism, it has gotten worse. The issue here is not simply about a morally depraved culture of silence, it is about a university surrendering its mission as a democratic public sphere where students learn to think critically, hold power accountable, and connect knowledge and social relations to the social costs they enact. A university needs real leadership for this type of task, not managerial clones who confuse education with training and engaged research with Pentagon and corporate handouts. Penn State is now a managerial model of corporate influence and power and the arrogance and bad faith this model breeds is evident in the ways in which everyone acted in the face of this crisis, from Paterno to its ethically challenged president, Graham Spanier. What the public should be asking about this crisis is not what has happened to Penn State but how have so many universities arrived at a similar place in time and history when they are just like any other mega factory and slick shopping mall, divorced from any viable notion of learning and, as we see with Penn State University, any viable sense of ethical and moral responsibility.”
  • The Brutal Truth About Penn State by Charles P. Pierce "It is not a failure of our institutions so much as it is a window into what they have become — soulless, profit-driven monsters, Darwinian predators with precious little humanity left in them. Penn State is only the most recent example. Too much of this country is too big to fail. If Mike McQueary had seen a child being raped in a boardroom or a storeroom, he wouldn't have been any more likely to have stopped it, or to have called the cops, than he was as a graduate assistant football coach at Penn State. With unemployment edging toward double digits, and only about 10 percent of the workforce unionized, every American who works for a major company knows the penalty for exercising his personal freedom, or his personal morality, at the expense of "the company." Independent thought is discouraged. Independent action is usually crushed. Nobody wants to damage the brand. Your supervisor might find out, and his primary loyalty is to the company. Which is why he got promoted to be your supervisor in the first place. It happens because institutions lie. And today, our major institutions lie because of a culture in which loyalty to "the company," and protection of "the brand" — that noxious business-school shibboleth that turns employees into brainlocked elements of sales and marketing campaigns — trumps conventional morality, traditional ethics, civil liberties, and even adherence to the rule of law. It is better to protect "the brand" than it is to protect free speech, the right to privacy, or even to protect children."
NOW compare those to Chris Hedges at AlterNet 2009
  • Higher Education Gone Wrong: Universities Are Turning into Corporate Drone Factories "Frank Donoghue, the author of "The Last Professors: The Corporate University and the Fate of the Humanities," details how liberal arts education has been dismantled. Any form of learning that is not strictly vocational has at best been marginalized and in many schools has been abolished. Students are steered away from asking the broad, disturbing questions that challenge the assumptions of the power elite or an economic system that serves the corporate state. This has led many bright graduates into the arms of corporate entities they do not examine morally or ethically. They accept the assumptions of corporate culture because they have never been taught to think.
  • And Hedges at TruthOut 2009 Happiness Consultants Won’t Stop a Depression The driving ideology of corporate culture is a blind faith in the power and virtue of the corporate collective. All quotas can be met. All things are possible. Profits can always be raised. It is only a question of the right attitude. The highest form of personal happiness, we are told, is when the corporation thrives. .... Corporate employees, like everyone else, are gripped by personal dilemmas, anxieties and troubles. They are not permitted, however, to ask whether the problem is the corporate structure and the corporate state. If they are not happy, there is, they are told, something wrong with them. Real debate, real clashes of opinion, are, in the happy world of corporatism, forbidden. They are considered rude. The corporations enforce a relentless optimism that curtails honest appraisal of reality and preserves hierarchical forms of organization under the guise of “participation.” Corporate culture provides, as Christopher Lasch pointed out, a society dominated by corporate elites with an anti-elitist ideology.
Of course Penn is just one of thousands of Korporate Kolleges pushing fealty to the Korporate Structure via "vocational" studies, oftentimes leaving their "graduates" thousands of dollars in debt, creating a whole new generation of Debt Slaves. Where will the next shoe drop? Listen to former Sports Illustrated editor and author Frank Deford on NPR Is Football Culture The Core Of The Problem? as you sit down for turkey and the Lions and Cowboys games on Thursday: "Yet I must wonder, as well, how much the culture of the particular sport involved — football — abetted the conspiracy of silence, especially at the inception when neither the young assistant nor Paterno himself could bring himself to go to the police." Our own msgeaux finds a nice tie-in on the MF GLOBAL BANKRUPCY The Koch Brothers and MF Global - Friends to the End So much about the collapse of MF Global, the international commodity firm, has revisited the worst sins of the 2008 financial meltdown. .....But perhaps the most stunning piece of news we're getting in the wake of the MF Global collapse is in the clients of the firm who managed to get away scot-free, with no freezing of accounts or capital -- particularly the accounts of the mega-cap independent oil company Koch Industries, run by the politically active Koch brothers. A recent report in Reuters has described the billions of dollars of client accounts that were withdrawn from MF Global in the last few weeks before their collapse, including 8 accounts from Koch industries engaged in oil trade that were transferred to Mizuho Securities after years of a steady and profitable relationship with MF. The Reuters piece concentrates on the possibilities of legal "clawback" of client money if the bankruptcy does not allow remaining client accounts to be made whole. The Reuters piece misses the point. Both the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange were charged with overseeing MF Global, their clearing member. If we are to believe them, they had no idea of any difficulties within the firm before customer accounts went missing just a few days before the collapse. But someone clearly knew of the cratering positions and imminent collapse of MF Global, as billions of dollars of accounts were "coincidentally" withdrawn. And what do the Koch brothers say was the reason for these withdrawals? There's been no comment. For those still battling the excesses of 2008 and those occupying Wall Street, this has been another proof of the inside, "fixed" operation of the financial markets. When banks go wrong, betting big with other people's money and losing, they can be sure of a bailout that guarantees their bonuses and businesses. And when firms are tailspinning to disaster, the richest and most financially influential partners are sure to get a phone call -- a "heads-up" - to save their assets and leave regular people with the mess. Jon Corzine used his strong Wall Street reputation to intimidate regulators in establishing the positions that ultimately doomed MF Global. That reputation was built upon always taking care of your friends and your biggest customers. The next investigation should question whether Jon Corzine used his last days at MF Global to help his friends one last time -- as for me, I have no doubt. Tyler Durden at zerohedge has more on the MF Global robbery "The Entire System Has Been Utterly Destroyed By The MF Global Collapse" - Presenting The First MF Global Casualty Presented without comment, merely to confirm that the market as we know it, no longer exists. Dear Clients, Industry Colleagues and Friends of Barnhardt Capital Management, It is with regret and unflinching moral certainty that I announce that Barnhardt Capital Management has ceased operations.... The reason for my decision to pull the plug was excruciatingly simple: I could no longer tell my clients that their monies and positions were safe in the futures and options markets – because they are not. And this goes not just for my clients, but for every futures and options account in the United States. The entire system has been utterly destroyed by the MF Global collapse. ... Let’s not sugar-coat this or make this crime seem “complex” and “abstract” by drowning ourselves in six-dollar words and uber-technical jargon. Jon Corzine STOLE the customer cash at MF Global. Knowing Jon Corzine, and knowing the abject lawlessness and contempt for humanity of the Marxist Obama regime and its cronies, this is not really a surprise. What was a surprise was the reaction of the exchanges and regulators. Their reaction has been to take a bad situation and make it orders of magnitude worse. Specifically, they froze customers out of their accounts WHILE THE MARKETS CONTINUED TO TRADE, refusing to even allow them to liquidate. This is unfathomable. The risk exposure precedent that has been set is completely intolerable and has destroyed the entire industry paradigm. No informed person can continue to engage these markets, and no moral person can continue to broker or facilitate customer engagement in what is now a massive game of Russian Roulette. ... Finally, I will not, under any circumstance, consider reforming and re-opening Barnhardt Capital Management, or any other iteration of a brokerage business, until Barack Obama has been removed from office AND the government of the United States has been sufficiently reformed and repopulated so as to engender my total and complete confidence in the government, its adherence to and enforcement of the rule of law, and in its competent and just regulatory oversight of any commodities markets that may reform. So long as the government remains criminal, it would serve no purpose whatsoever to attempt to rebuild the futures industry or my firm, because in a lawless environment, the same thievery and fraud would simply happen again, and the criminals would go unpunished, sheltered by the criminal oligarchy. And now some good robo-signing news from jen "I heart Catherine Cortez Masto, my AG!!! Yves:" Nevada Attorney General Masto Files 606 Count Criminal Indictment Against Two Title Officers (Updated: Lender Processing Services Employees) The Nevada attorney general Catherine Cortez Masto has just filed a 606 count indictment against two title officers in a single county, Clark County, for supervising the filing of tens of thousands of fraudulent documents in a robo-signing scheme. ....In addition, as mob prosecutions have shown again and again, you start by going after the foot soldiers in the hope that they roll people higher up on the food chain. And at a minimum, this action says that the law and due process matter, and violations, particularly large scale, systematic violations, can and will be punished. Yves Smith also found a Devastating Analysis of MERS! ...I’ve read a number of legal analyses of MERS, and this is one of the tidiest I’ve seen of what is so wrong headed about it. I try to avoid long extracts with limited commentary of my own, but I think you’ll see why I’m treating this selection as worthy of your consideration. The full paper, “The MERS Mortgage in Massachusetts” was sent by the author Robert Ludden to 4ClosureFraud, and you can download it there.
...The persistence of MERS as Lender A’s agent in the public record in effect accomplished with smoke and mirrors—and it conjures a host of evils. Yes, every MERS member establishes its own agency relationship with MERS. But immediately upon transfer of the mortgage from Lender A the agency relationship between MERS Lender A ends. The agency between MERS and Owner B is in fact a new and distinct agency relationship—and, given the functional identity between principal and agent, a new and distinct “MERS” as well. Again, in the absence of a valid assignment, the status of MERS as the mortgagee in the public records becomes a misrepresentation of material fact at the very instant the mortgage is assigned by Lender A, and from that point on the mortgage industry is, in effect, using a ghost to do its bidding—and one of dubious character at that. Only the name “MERS” remains; the “continuity” is a chimera, an illusion, the purpose of which is to make an end run around the need for a formal assignment. It has also served as a red herring, distracting courts from the sober fact that the role of MERS as a “common agent,” for all of its theoretical elegance and self-proclaimed validity, simply cannot in its present form be fit into the framework of existing law without inflicting collateral damage upon the very principles of fairness and transparency on which that framework has been built over many years and through many efforts and sacrifices. What this all boils down to it this: in order for MERS to remain the mortgagee of record at the local land office without fraudulently misrepresenting itself as such three things must occur.

Robert Scheer gets our last word The Villain Occupy Wall Street Has Been Waiting For In the pantheon of billionaires without shame, Michael Bloomberg, the Wall Street banker-turned-business-press-lord-turned-mayor, is now secure at the top. What is so offensive is that someone who abetted Wall Street greed, and benefited as much as anyone from it, has no compunction about ruthlessly repressing those who dare exercise their constitutional “right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” that he helped to create. .... It is mind-boggling that Bloomberg still hypes the CANARD that the banks were forced to reap enormous profits from toxic securities. It is an embarrassing, dishonest position when the record of banker fraud in creating the housing bubble is so well documented in Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuits. Is Bloomberg unaware that the major banks have agreed to pay hefty fines in a meager compensation for their schemes? That he blames the victims of the securitization swindles and then orders the arrest of those who dare speak the truth is a tribute to his belief in the enduring power of the big lie. ... Yet the man whose personal wealth increased by $4.5 billion the first year of this meltdown when many Americans were losing their life savings now dares shift blame away from himself and others at the center of economic power to the most vulnerable among us. Instead of blaming the Wall Street lobbyists who got the laws changed so that they could securitize people’s home mortgages, no matter how unsound those mortgages were by design, he blames the folks suckered into accepting the banks’ phony offerings. “Blame the opium addict and not the pusher” is the excuse for the bankers who turned the lure of easy credit into a housing bubble that, when it inevitably exploded, impoverished the world but left the bailed-out Wall Street hustlers richer than ever. ... Instead, the people led away in handcuffs are not the bankers who perpetuated the fraud of turning homes into the junk of toxic mortgages, which should be judged as criminal, but decent people who have committed only the “crime” of speaking truth to power.

We should have at least half the experts, pundits, quotes and real people represented in their coverage. In a debate as important as the one we are going into, we can’t allow the media to ignore the American Majority. Much more at www.ourfuture.org

    • VIDEO! Papantonio: The Death of Keynesian Economics Any credible economist in America will tell you that Keynesian economic policies are the only policies that will help spur economic growth. From FDR to Bill Clinton, Keynesian economics helped pull America out of the great Depression, as well as the recessions that were created by Ronald Reagan and Bush Senior. So why have Democrats today abandoned those policies? To help answer that question, Mike Papantonio spoke with Michael Corcoran, an investigative journalist with Truth-Out.org.
    • VIDEO! Sam Seder: Dirty Tricks of the Insurance Industry Exposed The average American reads on a 6th to 8th grade level, something that the insurance industry is well-aware of. And because of this, the industry writes the literature regarding their policies on a collegiate level, making it virtually impossible for the vast majority of Americans to even comprehend, so they end up buying policies that they don’t even need. That’s just one of the dirty tricks that the industry is playing on American consumers, and Sam Seder discusses even more shady tactics by the insurance industry with Wendell Potter, author of the book “Deadly Spin.”
