You know, the ones that don't want no gummint "interference" in health care or "bizness" or "regulatory control" or "rasin' taxes" for "socialist" programs like the EPA? Piyush "Bobby" Jindal speaks for them: "I spoke with Secretary Napolitano (aka The FEDS. -Ed.) this evening to outline the state’s needs as we brace for the impact of the oil spill on our coast. We appreciate the efforts to date of the Coast Guard and BP as the lead parties. As the oil spill comes closer to our coast, we have asked for additional resources from the Coast Guard and BP as we work to mitigate the impact of the spill on our state." and Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports in U.S. Gulf States Mobilize for Valdez-Like Oil Spill (Update4) "Jindal, a Republican, also requested federal funding for 90 days of military duty for as many as 6,000 National Guard troops and demanded extra oil barriers from BP and the U.S. Coast Guard to protect wildlife reserves that nurture a $1.8 billion seafood industry, the richest in the U.S. behind Alaska. Shrimpers and fishermen filed suit in federal court on April 28 against BP and Transocean Ltd., owner of the sunken rig. The lawsuits say Louisiana supplies 25 percent of the seafood for the continental U.S." Last year in front of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on offshore energy production David Rainey, Vice President for Gulf of Mexico Exploration at BP America said improved drilling technology allows oil companies to search for supplies in an environmentally friendly way: "These advances enable more production while reducing environmental impacts and allowing for efficient use of existing facilities and infrastructure...Finding oil and gas for the future requires exploring in areas that are ever deeper and more complex." (see Reuters). How's that working out for ya, Mr. Rainey? So BP now is trying to burn the oil or use a "dispersant". ProPuiblica reports in Chemicals Meant To Break Up BP Oil Spill Present New Environmental Concerns, "On Thursday BP began using the chemical compounds to dissolve the crude oil, both on the surface and deep below, deploying an estimated 100,000 gallons...The exact makeup of the dispersants is kept secret under competitive trade laws, but a worker safety sheet for one product, called Corexit, says it includes 2-butoxyethanol, a compound associated with headaches, vomiting and reproductive problems at high doses. “There is a chemical toxicity to the dispersant compound that in many ways is worse than oil,” said Richard Charter, a foremost expert on marine biology and oil spills who is a senior policy advisor for Marine Programs for Defenders of Wildlife and is chairman of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. “It’s a trade off – you’re damned if you do damned if you don’t -- of trying to minimize the damage coming to shore, but in so doing you may be more seriously damaging the ecosystem offshore.” Surprisingly BP did not respond to requests for comment for ProPublica's article! Raw Story posts an AP article Gulf oil spill swiftly balloons, could move east that explains, "...the spill should eclipse the 1989 Exxon Valdez incident as the worst U.S. oil disaster in history in a matter of weeks. But a growing number of experts warned that the situation may already be much worse. "The spill and the spreading is getting so much faster and expanding much quicker than they estimated," said Hans Graber, executive director of the university's Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing. "Clearly, in the last couple of days, there was a big change in the size." ... As bad as the oil spill looks on the surface, it may be only half the problem, said University of California Berkeley engineering professor Robert Bea, who serves on a National Academy of Engineering panel on oil pipeline safety...Louisiana State University professor Ed Overton, who heads a federal chemical hazard assessment team for oil spills, worries about a total collapse of the pipe inserted into the well. If that happens, there would be no warning and the resulting gusher could be even more devastating because regulating flow would then be impossible." WOW. Offshore Drilling is Not The Answer: Restore the Moratorium

The tragic and devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a stark reminder that offshore oil drilling is not the answer.
The Deepwater Horizon rig that exploded and sank has spilled millions of gallons of oil into the ecologically rich waters in the Gulf of Mexico and continues to gush 210,000 gallons of oil into the sea every day. The spill remains unabated and now has the potential to become one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. The unfolding catastrophe clearly illustrates that offshore drilling is not safe and new technology is not fool proof.
Tell the Obama Administration new drilling is NOT THE ANSWER. Our coasts and the economy they support cannot withstand anymore!
We are reminded why the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara and the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill led to state and federal moratoriums on offshore oil drilling. The tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico makes it clear that it is time once again time to restore those moratoriums.

Wall Street Shuffle FIRST OFF We warned you last week "ED RENDELL tries to make sense of anything MARSHA BLACKBURN (Kook - TN) has to say." We go to Richard Cohen from the reliable WaPo who actually WATCHED AND THEN BLOGGED about it in The Tea Party's moment of truth

On “Meet the Press” yesterday, David Gregory asked Marsha Blackburn, a very Republican congresswoman from Tennessee, whether she approved of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) referring to the Obama administration as “this gangster government.” Blackburn had just finished telling Gregory that the Tea Party is wonderful because it’s about truth: “What they want is leaders who are going to say, ‘Look, we’re –you may not agree with us, we’re going to tell you the truth. We’re going to tell you we’re we stand.’” So where did Blackburn stand on Bachmann’s remark, made at a Tea Party rally? “Are those views that you would stand behind? That kind of rhetoric?” Gregory wanted to know. In other words, is the United States of America like Venezuela or Cuba, or Syria or Belarus? Or was this another example of extremely tasteless rhetoric, an incredibly un-Tea Partyish lie uttered by a politician who had contempt -- utter contempt, if I can editorialize -- for her audience? I held my breath: This threatened to be a moment of truth, candor and nearly unprecedented boldness. But Blackburn was in a bit of a fix. After all, conservatives have been on a bender of Shavian wit lately: “You lie!” “Baby killer!” Not to mention the allegation that Barack Obama is a socialist -- or, as Newt Gingrich and Jim Garlow phrased it in a recent Washington Post op-ed, that Christian conservatives are up against “a secular-socialist culture,” which is as close as I would like to come, thank you, to a Godless-Menshevik culture of the sort found on the Upper West Side of New York. Still, while the culture is abhorrent, the bagels are pretty good. Ah, but I digress. We must get back to “Guts Ball” Blackburn, as she will henceforth be known. Did she agree? Did she approve? Gangster government? Rat-a-tat-at?
“You know, I choose a different rhetoric,” Blackburn said.
But that was not what Gregory asked, and he said so.
DG: “Wait, but one sec -- is that over the line?...”
MB: “That was very --”
DG: “Is that over the line?”
The congresswoman from truth, from candor, from telling people where she stood, summoned all her political courage and said,
MB: “Those -- those are the words that she chose and the statements that she made.”
Pathetic.

Tell us how you REALLY FEEL, Richard! Haha! So this week must be REALLY IMPORTANT (brought to you by Cargill and Boeing and BP to try to make you believe they are "saving the planet" with their "green" technology using "energy right here at home" aka nuclear power, off-shore drilling and "clean coal" during the corporate "breaks" - we digress). Explosions in WVA? Oh yes, the Massey coal mine explosion, that is. Let's take a brief moment to look at the history of what's know today as Massey Energy. Here's a short timeline:

• 1920: A.T. Massey Coal Company (ATM) is formed.
• 1972: E. Morgan Massey becomes president of ATM.
• 1974: The company is sold to St. Joe Minerals.
• 1980: Royal Dutch/Shell Group and St. Joe form the Massey Coal Partnership.
• 1981: The Fluor Corporation acquires St. Joe.
• 1987: ATM becomes a wholly owned Fluor subsidiary.
• 1990: Don Blankenship named President
• 2000: The Fluor Corporation is split into two publicly traded companies, with the coal operations becoming Massey Energy Company.
• FAMOUS QUOTE: "We must demand that more coal be burned to save the Earth from global cooling."
• "Don Blankenship would actually be less powerful if he were in elected office," Rep. Nick Rahall of West Virginia once observed. "He would be twice as accountable and half as feared." (Rolling Stone - Climate Killers - The Coal Baron: Don Blankenship

What's interesting is the connection of Don Blankenship's Massey and FLUOR. Who is FLUOR? (Yes 'who' as we all know corporations are 'people' now.) Here's just TWO. 2004: Fluor venture lands $1.1B Iraq contract 2004: Fluor awarded $154m in Iraqi power restoration projects Out googly fingers found MUCH MORE but you get the idea. We recommend watching Mine War on Blackberry Creek (1986) - Web Stream: "Mine War on Blackberry Creek reports on the long and bitter United Mine Workers of America strike in 1984 against A.T. Massey, America's fourth largest coal company with corporate ties to apartheid South Africa." Of course the mine that exploded in WVA last Monday was NON-UNION and Don Blankenship is a self-proclaimed Union-Buster. ThinkProgress points out in Deadly Record: Massey’s Mine In Montcoal Has Been Cited For Over 3,000 Violations, Over $2.2 Million In Fines Since 1995, Massey’s Upper Big Branch-South Mine has been cited for 3,007 safety violations. Massey is contesting 353 violations, and 127 are delinquent. [MSHA]; Massey is contesting over a third (34.7%) of the 516 safety citations the Upper Big Branch-South Mine received in 2009, its greatest count in the last 15 years. [MSHA]; In March 2010, 53 new safety citations were issued for Massey’s Upper Big Branch-South Mine, including violations of its mine ventilation plan. [MSHA]; Massey’s corrupt CEO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce board member Don Blankenship, has previously told employees that it was more important to “run coal” than follow safety regulations. So it seems Massey would rather pay the fines, ignore the citations or litigate as long as possible with their army of lawyers rather than making their mines as safe as possible for their NON-UNION mine workers. MSHA and Congressional investigations will come and go, but Don Blankenship will still be CEO of Massey, barring a Chinese-like "suicide" or a Fred Sanford-like "Elizabeth! I'm comin'!" moment. The best coverage of the latest Massey mine explosion and subsequent rescue has been on The Horn with Bob Kincaid. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray.
