ALL LINKS OPEN A NEW WINDOW!!!MEMORIAL DAY & MORE OIL Before we get to our usual business here are a few essays you should read: Just how big is that gusher in the Gulf of Mexico? by Paul Noel for Pure Energy Systems News, Tomgram: Subhankar Banerjee, Oil Follies in the Arctic by photographer, writer, and activist Subhankar Banerjee at TomDispatch.com, Concerns Up and Down the Food Chain by By Leslie Kaufman @ NYT and Fishgrease: DKos Booming School by Fishgrease who sez, "I've been in Oil and Gas Production (all upstream) and Exploration for over 30 years. My salary is a little bigger than God's, which is okay because I'm more useful than he is." If you are easily offended by "salty language", don't go there! As you've probably heard by now the Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico CATASTROPHE is BIGGER than the Exxon Valdez "spill" (by ANY estimates) and that Big Polluter's (BP) latest "Top Kill" attempt has failed to stop Gulf oil leak @ McClatchy, who reports now, "In its next effort to halt what its officials have called an "environmental catastrophe," BP will cut off the leaking riser at the top of the five-story blowout preventer atop the wellhead to get an even surface on the broken pipe. Then the company will install what's called a lower marine riser package, a cap containment system that would be connected to a new riser from the drillship Discoverer Enterprise 5,000 feet above on the surface. The aim is to minimize the amount of oil reaching the shore until BP can drill relief wells, Suttles said. He estimated that the procedure would take about four days to complete, but if it also fails, it could be several months before BP can finish drilling two relief wells to intersect the runaway well so concrete can be poured into it." SEVERAL MONTHS?? Then, one must ask, how many more Valdezes will this amount to? Business Protector (BP) has to be careful about what it says and when it says it because it just might upset their shareholders and their stock price! NPR's Tamara Kieth reported on Friday's All Things Considered 'Top Kill' Moves BP Stock, Professor JOHN COFFEE (Securities Law, Columbia University): Given the context that BP finds itself in with an environmental catastrophe of really unequal proportions, any disclosure about what's going on either with recent events or your current progress in stopping that leak is going to be material market moving information...KEITH: Material market moving information is a key term because he says there are federal rules limiting the way companies are allowed to share it. BP officials say they won't release operational play by play information to reporters as the top kill proceeds because the information is, quote, "market sensitive." Coffee says BP is being cautious for good reason. COFFEE: BP, as a company listed on U.S. Securities Exchanges, cannot selectively disclose information. It must give that information to shareholders evenly...Professor JAY BROWN (Law, University of Denver): All big, public companies know that the message that they're stating to the marketplace about very volatile developments like this can influence the share prices. And I think in those circumstances they have a legal obligation to make sure what they say is very accurate. And I think that's what's going on here." So, if you have any mutual funds they more than likely have some (LOTS OF) shares of Bad Press (BP) and we encourage you to write (yes pen and paper) to your fund managers to GET OUT NOW before The Speculators (aka the "magic hand of the Free Market" - yes the same ones who ran up the price of oil to $140+/bbl in 2008) CRASH the stock price. Lawsuits are already piling up and MORE MONTHS of oil spewage (and the even more toxic "dispersants") will only add to Better Plead's (BP) EXPENSIVE legal consequences, which certainly will take YEARS to litigate. HAVING SAID ALL THAT yer Sunday Talkies will feature Backtracking Promises (BP) Managing Director BOB DUDLEY (not to be confused with Dudley Do-Right) on Face the Bob, Meet the David and FAKE NEWS SUNDAY while the WH Limo counters with their Energy Adviser CAROL BROWNER on FTN and MTP with Admiral MIKE MULLEN on State of Candy and FAUX NEWS towing the corporate line as well. We strongly recommend going through our line-up this week with a fine-tooth comb for more info on this ecological disaster (and other very pressing issues). We certainly appreciate all the engineers and scientists who are working around the clock to figure out the next moves to STOP the flow of millions-of-years-old dinosaur remains before it destroys an entire ecosystem for decades. For another take look at the ocean currents in the Gulf area at Exit Strategy. Meanwhile please support our line-up with whatever you can to keep these voices alive and on-the-air. The Brick TeeVee Crew has been digging in the dirt these past few weeks with all sorts of beans, cucumbers, lettuce and ORGANIC curly parsley, with zucchini and giant sunflowers! Our ages-old tiller is in the shop so we still have half our garden space reserved for tomatoes, peppers, egg plants and more until we can get it all tilled. Enjoy your holiday and get those Victory Gardens going already! See Michael Pollan on AlterNet!

Offshore Drilling is Not The Answer: Restore the Moratorium
from Surfrider Foundation (h/t jen)
The tragic and devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a stark reminder that offshore oil drilling is not the answer.
The Deepwater Horizon rig that exploded and sank has spilled millions of gallons of oil into the ecologically rich waters in the Gulf of Mexico and continues to gush 210,000 gallons of oil into the sea every day. The spill remains unabated and now has the potential to become one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. The unfolding catastrophe clearly illustrates that offshore drilling is not safe and new technology is not fool proof.
Tell the Obama Administration new drilling is NOT THE ANSWER. Our coasts and the economy they support cannot withstand anymore!
We are reminded why the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara and the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill led to state and federal moratoriums on offshore oil drilling. The tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico makes it clear that it is time once again time to restore those moratoriums.

• Info on Podcast #133 Published on 24 May 2010 by admin in Podcast Info -- California Special! PBC was asked by listener Ethan Knox to comment on the June 8 primary election. While he does not explicitly endorse candidates or tell you how to vote, your over-opinionated humble host is quite willing to tell you how he’s going to vote: Republican. That’s right, as an independent (decline-to-state) voter in California, Mr. Collins will be voting against the mega-wealthy corporate tools, Meg Whitman and Carlyfornication Fiorina. This podcast covers the races for governor, statewide constitutional offices, Barbara Boxer’s Senate seat, and 5 ballot measures, including 2 insidious initiatives openly written and promoted by corporations. And PBC apologizes for the reduced podcast schedule as he leaves for a week’s vacation; he pledges to deliver more podcasts starting in June.

• VIDEO! Papantonio: We Need a BP Perp Walk The company that owns the sunken Deepwater Horizon rig argued in federal court Tuesday that plaintiffs should not begin collecting evidence and testimony on the Gulf oil spill until the November deadline for claimants to file suit. Transocean Ltd. made it’s arguments in Houston after the federal court there accepted the company’s petition to limit it’s liability in the oil spill to less than $27 million, the amount the company says the sunken rig is worth. U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison made no rulings Tuesday, but he scheduled two more court dates for early June, noting he wants to focus on whether the suit should remain in Texas or move elsewhere and whether depositions should begin immediately. Mike Papantonio appears on The Ed Show to talk about some of the problems that the lawsuit is already running into.
