Back to School! Last week we failed to mention that the whole exercise of Big Petroleum (BP) and the Obama Administration in covering up and hiding how much oil has actually gushed from the Deep Water Horizon disaster (in our humble opinion) is to LIMIT the amount of DAMAGES Bloated Pigs (BP) will eventually have to pay: more oil "spilled" = more fines and damages. We hope you aren't bored with our incessant coverage of this but when it comes to an ECOLOGICAL DISASTER of THIS MAGNITUDE that will affect the Gulf Coast and the world's ecosystems for DECADES we're like a dog with a fresh hamhock bone! By most estimates the mile-deep well was spewing something like one Exxon Valdez every 3-4 DAYS for over three months. This is NOT trivial. So for Balls Popping (BP) and the gummint to claim "75% of the oil is gone" seems on its face a complete lie. And if you've been following our links you may know both have been actively buying "scientists" to support their claims to create this alternate-reality image (including Da Prez allegedly swimming "in the Gulf") as proscribed by the Corporopress stenographers. "No oil here! These aren't the droids you are looking for! Move on!" So we'll be short and point you to Slow Violence and the BP Coverups at CounterPunch, Confirmed: Corexit Still Being Sprayed in the Gulf at Washington's Blog, Uncovering the Lies That Are Sinking the Oil at t r u t h o u t and BP's Deep Secrets at MotherJones.com. From "Slow Violence" we get "contractor Steve, though that is not his real name" and he says, “It’s as if a nuclear apocalypse has gone off in the Gulf,” he said. “The media is not telling the truth. No one is telling the truth." STEVE? More... "As it happens, Steve knows a good deal about dispersants. Before coming to work on the oil spill, he worked as a contractor for Halliburton; he now works in the Gulf for a company dealing with environmental toxicity and health hazards." And "This also means that if anyone sues BP for health problems caused by toxic exposure to oil or chemicals, CTEH will be the expert witness called in on BP’s behalf." This is grim. More under the heading "The Corexit Cover-up"... The main ingredient in Corexit is 2-Butoxyethenol, which is toxic to blood, kidneys, liver and the central nervous system, also causing cancer, birth defects. Corexit is mutagenic for bacteria, huge amounts of which live in the Gulf of Mexico. Corexit ruptures red blood cells and accumulates as it moves up the food chain. The EPA, reluctant at first to release data, eventually conceded that Corexit is LETHAL for 50% of any group of test animals that comes in contact with it. Even the Department of Transportation classifies Corexit as Class 6.1: Poisonous Material” for transportation purposes. But never mind THAT! We have SHINY OBJECTS to discuss on the Sunday Corporo-Funnies! Like GLAN BECK discussing his DESECRATION of the Lincoln Memorial on the Anniversary of Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech on Fake News (see DU nmbluesky MLK VS GLENN BECK). Meanwhile Face the Bob follows the SHINY OBJECT OF THE WEEK State Primaries with Florida's KENDRICK MEEK and Alaska's JOE MILLER (a generic name if ever ther was one!) and Meet the David does a navel exercise in "Katrina: Five Years Later". Following suit is State of the Candy with MEEK and ex-GOP-now-Independent CHARLIE CRIST (see Ring of Fire with John Nichols of The Nation about the GOP destroying their "moderates"). This Christianne goes BACK TO SCHOOL to discuss the U.S. Education system "reform" with ED SEC ARNE DUNCAN on how the "private sector" can "fix" the public school system. This, and "charter schools" of course, are the code words for breaking the Teachers Unions and creating a have/have-not two-tiered education system while making "education" corporations HUGE money on taxpayers' dime. Offshore Drilling is Not The Answer: Restore the Moratorium

The tragic and devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a stark reminder that offshore oil drilling is not the answer.
The Deepwater Horizon rig that exploded and sank has spilled millions of gallons of oil into the ecologically rich waters in the Gulf of Mexico and continues to gush 210,000 gallons of oil into the sea every day. The spill remains unabated and now has the potential to become one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history. The unfolding catastrophe clearly illustrates that offshore drilling is not safe and new technology is not fool proof.
Tell the Obama Administration new drilling is NOT THE ANSWER. Our coasts and the economy they support cannot withstand anymore!
We are reminded why the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara and the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill led to state and federal moratoriums on offshore oil drilling. The tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico makes it clear that it is time once again time to restore those moratoriums.
