Brick TeeVee Election 2014 Post-Mortem The GOPhers won in a Big Wave in last Tuesday's mid-term election taking control of the U.S. Senate and increasing their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. For the Democrats and many progressive-leaning peeps it seems like a death knell and the end of the world (and it could be considering how many anti-science candidates were elected or re-elected). But a BIG THING TO REMEMBER is that voter turn-out was HISTORICALLY low, perhaps less than 40% of the electorate, which in part can be attributed to the GOP-controlled states enacting voter suppression tactics like Voter I.D. laws and more (see BradBlog below for more info on that) and GOPher redistricting along party and ethnic/racial lines from their sweep in the last mid terms in 2010 and MASSIVE outside-group spending making this election the most costly ever. WHAT THIS REALLY MEANS is that LESS THAN 20% of the electorate made this "Decision 2014" happen, certainly NOT the "mandate" from the "American people" the GOPhers are now crowing about. There were also some decidedly PROGRESSIVE state-wide issues like increasing minimum wage that WON BIG at the same time.     History shows that a free press remains a critical foundation for prosperous, open, and secure societies, allowing citizens to access information and hold their governments accountable. ................ In the overwhelming majority of these cases, the perpetrators of these crimes against journalists go unpunished. All governments must protect the ability of journalists to write and speak freely. On this first-ever International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the United States commends the priceless contributions by journalists to the freedom and security of us all, shining light into the darkness and giving voice to the voiceless. We honor the sacrifices so many journalists have made in their quest for the truth, and demand accountability for those who have committed crimes against journalists.

    In a speech today in Washington, AP President and CEO Gary Pruitt [said]: The actions of the DOJ against AP are already having an impact beyond the specifics of this case. Some longtime trusted sources have become nervous and anxious about talking with us — even on stories unrelated to national security. In some cases, government employees we once checked in with regularly will no longer speak to us by phone. Others are reluctant to meet in person. .......... And I can tell you that this chilling effect on newsgathering is not just limited to AP. Journalists from other news organizations have personally told me that it has intimidated both official and nonofficial sources from speaking to them as well. Now, the government may love this. But beware a government that loves too much secrecy.
There is this too, coming at that press freedom from the other direction: [.......aclu.org.........] And remember this? [..........politico.com...........] That's a lot of respect for journalists and the first amendment. I guess nobody really cares about any of this. We're (probably) about to see Mark Udall get kicked out of the Senate at the hands of some authoritarian neanderthal. Still it's shameful to see the White House offer up sanctimonious lectures about press freedom when they've been busily eroding one of America's few values that actually stood out as being unique in this world --- the values of 1st Amendment. Thanks to Digby for pointing out some of the most incredulous hubris of this administration! CLIMATE NEWS: The U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released their final climate report before the big Climate Change conference in Paris in a few months. KARL RITTER at HuffPoAOL explains UN Climate Change Report Delivers Stark Warnings COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Climate change is happening, it's almost entirely man's fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.'s panel on climate science said Sunday. The fourth and final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's giant climate assessment offered no surprises, nor was it expected to since it combined the findings of three reports released in the past 13 months. But it underlined the scope of the climate challenge in stark terms. Emissions, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, may need to drop to zero by the end of this century for the world to have a decent chance of keeping the temperature rise below a level that many consider dangerous. The IPCC didn't say exactly what such a world would look like but it would likely require a massive shift to renewable sources to power homes, cars and industries combined with new technologies to suck greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The report warned that failure to reduce emissions could lock the world on a trajectory with "irreversible" impacts on people and the environment. Some impacts already being observed included rising sea levels, a warmer and more acidic ocean, melting glaciers and Arctic sea ice and more frequent and intense heat waves. "Science has spoken. There is no ambiguity in their message. Leaders must act. Time is not on our side," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the report's launch in Copenhagen. Amid its grim projections, the report said the tools are there to set the world on a low-emissions path and break the addiction to burning oil, coal and gas which pollute the atmosphere with heat-trapping CO2, the chief greenhouse gas. .............. Today only a small minority of scientists challenge the mainstream conclusion that climate change is linked to human activity. Global Climate Change, a NASA website, says 97 percent of climate scientists agree that warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities. The American public isn't as convinced. A year-old survey by Pew Research showed 67 percent of Americans believed global warming is occurring and 44 percent said the earth is warming mostly because of human activity. More recently, a New York Times poll said 42 percent of Republicans say global warming won't have a serious impact, a view held by 12 percent of Democrats and 22 percent of independents. ............ Emissions have risen so fast in recent years that the world has used up two-thirds of its carbon budget, the maximum amount of CO2 that can be emitted to have a likely chance of avoiding 2 degrees of warming, the IPCC report said. "This report makes it clear that if you are serious about the 2-degree goal ... there is nowhere to hide," said Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists, an advocacy group. "You can't wait several decades to address this issue.".................... The biggest hurdle is deciding who should do what. Rich countries are calling on China and other major developing countries to set ambitious targets; developing countries saying the rich have a historical responsibility to lead the fight against warming and to help poorer nations cope with its impacts. The IPCC avoided taking sides, saying the risks of climate change "are generally greater for disadvantaged people and communities in countries at all levels of development." And with any luck and a little more campaigning, they won’t. But if we don’t stop fast track, it will be right over our shoulders in January, February, March, that they will make a deal. The vast majority of the tax schemes that we have heard about in the past few years are organised by one [ or other] of the big four accounting firms.” The revelations about Luxembourg tax agreements negotiated by PricewaterhouseCoopers for some of the largest corporations in the world have been described as a “game changer” by an expert on international tax.
